Subject: ESV opinion poll |
Bible Note: The idea that the English Standard Version (ESV) uses poor English is fatuous, inane, absurd and pompous nonsense. I have read widely in the ESV and find it to be exactly as advertised: "The English Standard Version (ESV) stands in the classic mainstream of English Bible translations over the past half-millennium. The fountainhead of that stream was William Tyndale's New Testament of 1526; marking its course were the King James Version of 1611 (KJV), the English Revised Version of 1885 (RV), the American Standard Version of 1901 (ASV), and the Revised Standard Version of 1952 and 1971 (RSV). In that stream, faithfulnss to the text and vigorous pursuit of accuracy were combined with simplicity, beauty, and dignity of expression. Our goal has been to carry forward this legacy for a new century." (from the Preface to the ESV)..... So, I suppose you could say that the ESV is rendered into poor English if you like, but then you are also saying virtually the same thing of the King James Bible -- the noblest monument to English prose in the history of the language -- and its sister translations from Tyndale to the RSV. The lone example offered to "prove" the poor quality of the ESV -- the idiomatic 'slept with his fathers' -- is laughingly ridiculous and not worthy of additional comment. It's outrageous to imply that "The Message" is preferable to the ESV. In fact, I find almost all the assertions made in your quoted passage outrageous and not worthy of serious consideration. But there is after all, I suppose, no accounting for taste. --Hank |
