Subject: Can angels sing? |
Bible Note: Kalos - Not a few of the concepts many people have of angels come not from Scripture but from secular sources -- from art, from Christmas carols ("Hark, the Herald Angels Sing"), from tales and folklore. I don't recall ever having seen a painting of a male angel. They are all depicted as being beautiful young women with wings and halos. I had a college professor who frequently used the simile, "He writes like an angel." Yet I don't find much in Scripture about angelic authors, and to my knowledge there are no books extant that were written by angels. ...... A few years ago in December of that year I took a train trip through the Cascades. It was a strikingly beautiful landscape of pine forest with lofty mountains rising out of the horizon in the distance. Snow fell softly on the pine trees creating a majestic winter wonderland. I have seen few things more beautiful in my life. So, then if angels are supposed to sing and play celestial harps, why can't it snow in heaven? A choir of angels singing Christmas carols while snow gently caresses the pines outside the heavenly cathedral -- what a splendid scene to imagine. And indeed angels may sing in heaven and snow may fall in heaven, but the sober fact is that this is nothing more than wishful thinking. It is not revealed in Scripture. And I've never been any good at all in reading between the lines. Or known anyone who was. --Hank |
