NASB | Esther 9:1 Now in the twelfth month (that is, the month Adar), on the thirteenth day when the king's command and edict were about to be executed, on the day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, it was turned to the contrary so that the Jews themselves gained the mastery over those who hated them. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Esther 9:1 Now in the twelfth month (that is, the month of Adar) on the thirteenth day when the king's command and edict were about to be executed, on the [very] day when the enemies of the Jews had hoped to gain power over them [and slaughter them], it happened the other way around so that the Jews themselves gained power over those who hated them. |
Bible Question: I'm studying Esther. In Esther Chapter 9 Verses 10, 15 and 16, it says that the Jews slew their enemies but did not take the spoil. It interests me that this is spoken three times. I usually pay attention when anything is repeated (from the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses a thing is established). Does anyone have any thoughts as to the significance of this? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Gen 14:22-24; 1 Sam 15:3, 17-20; Est 8:11, 9:5-10, 15-16 ... Greetings chinny, The Jews finally wiped out the Amalakites (Est 9:5-10) as they were told (Exo 17:16, Due 25:17-19). Saul failed and even took the plunder, which he was supposed to destroy (1 Sam 15:3, 17-20). Even though they were given permission to take (Est 8:11), they chose not to (9:5-10, 15-16). I think somehow they remembered the command given to Saul ... that overrode the earthly king's permission. They could of remembered that what Saul did cost him his throne. There were three separate groups, so it was mentioned three times. Maybe the other two times were imfluenced by Mordeecai, too. Or remembered what Abram did (Gen 14:22-24). I hope I answered your question, Searcher |
