Bible Question: I have been studying the epistle of 1 John and I am looking for a little help clarifying 1 John 5:7-8. The KJV is somewhat confusing in verse 8 and in the NASB most of both verses are gone compared to the KJV. My question is why the discrepancy? Also, if we look at the KJV of the text, what does it mean by "...three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood;..." Thank you |
Bible Answer: First of all, the KJV translation is wrong in verse 7. None of the ancient manuscripts contain its version. It was added at a much later date. A good commentary will tell you all about it. So, the NAS is the more accurate version here. Now, as for answering you question. We have to go up and look at verse 6. "1 John 5:6 This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth." The water signifies Jesus' baptism. An outward witness on earth of our sanctification in Him. The blood is of course his crucifixion. Also symbolized within the Lord's Supper. Here can also be the water, since at his crucifixion, blood and water flowed from the spear wound. The Spirit is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of truth, the Gospel, by which we preach and live. These are the witnesses in the earth, and they all agree or point in one direction - the saving sacrifice of our Lord by which grace entered. |
