Bible Question: Is there anywhere in the Bible that says for a Minister not to marry a couple that are unbelivers? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Lefty1941! The short answer to your question is that Scripture does not address who conducts a marriage, or under what conditions a marriage should be joined. Therefore, ministers have a wide range of opinions on this issue. Ultimately, I believe that each minister must follow his own conscience on this point. Personally, my view is that it is acceptable. Here is why I believe this: 1) First, marriage is not uniquely Christian anymore. A judge, a justice of peace, or (in some states) just about anyone can marry someone. 2) Second, I require pre-maritial counseling, during which I present the gospel to the couple. 3) Third, marrying the couple allows me an entry point into their lives. So, I can allow a couple to go to a justice of the peace and get married anyway, or I can minister Christ in their lives. My personal choice is the later. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
