Bible Question:
What is tongues. Please explain this to me in plain English, and give me some passages from the new testament. God has not taught me this yet, but I am curious about it. Enlighten me in this so I won't be afraid next time someones says the word "Tongues" |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Mark 16:17; Acts 2:4, 10:46, 19:6; 1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30, 13:1, 14:2ff ... Martha, I agree that this or any gift should not cause us to be afraid. However, I don't agree with some of what was said. If you do type in Tongues under Search on the upper right of the screen, you'll find more postings. I believe the when someone speaks in tongues, it is a known language to the human hearer(s) by the passages above. Since it is a gift (1 Cor 12:10, 28, 30), we cannot ask for it. It would be rude to ask for any gift, even from another human. The Holy Spirit chooses who gets the gifts. If you read the reat of the chapter, we'd be wierd if we were all a tongue. In Acts, we read it only happened twice (10:46, 19:6) after Penecost (2:4). There are many more salvation experiences in the book. 1 Corinthians 14 shows when we speak in tongues, there must be order, it is unknown to us and most of the people, so we need an interpeter. The church needs to do this. When angels spoke to men, they did not speak in a heavenly language, but in a language the hearer understood (Rom 13:1). Don't be afaid when someone says the word "tongues" ... be aware of what the Bible says. This is a divisive issue. BTW Satan has copied this gift. Hope this helps, Searcher PS Romans 8:26 is not our groaning, but the Holy Spirit. It is not words, which are required for a language. We groan in verse 23. |
