Subject: Have you spoke in tongues? |
Bible Note: I believe the entire context here Brad was showing that these Corinthians were using the gifts, specifically tongues in an out of order manner. I can't prove this, but I believe that they were possibly even speaking to the congregation their sermons and teachings in tongues. The reason Paul say's that He would rather someone prophesy is because it builds up and edifies the Body of Christ 1 Cor. 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. This is the definition of a new testament prophet. One who edifies, exhorts, and comforts. It appears that these people were speaking in tongues all during their service and no one was getting anything out of it. Can you imagine the whole service in tongues. The only edification the Church would get out of it is if one would interpret. This would then edify the congregation. 1 Cor. 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. Why is prophesy greater than tongues without interpretation? It edifies the Church. So actually Brad I believe I took this scripture in context concerning Paul speaking about the out of order state this Church was in. That is why he later said in the last two verses: 1 Cor. 14:39-40 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. [40] But let all things be done properly and in an orderly manner. So Paul wished that they all spoke in tongues, just not in confusion, and only when recognized. He even gave the instructions on how to do it: 1 Cor. 14:27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and let one interpret; Your Brother In Christ Rick |
