Subject: Help! Unclean vs clean meat? |
Bible Note: Hello Tamara, I am so glad someone brought up Romans 14. This is a very difficult and misunderstood scripture. Paul here is writing from Corinth to the saints in Rome. 1Corithians was actually written a year or two before the book of Romans. While in Corinth Paul was dealing with the eating of meats offered to idols 1Corinth 8. This is a continuation of that subject along with whether to eat meat or only vegetables. Paul used the Greek word koinos in Romans 14 meaning common or cerimonially unclean. The greek word for unclean animals would be akathartos. Koinos or koinoo pertains to things considered defiled or polluted. I believe Romans 14 was pertaining to whether to eat meat offered to idols. The Romans would offer up a sacrifice in their pagan temple and sell what was not burned up in the market place and a christian could end up purchasing it. Some christians might have been offended by being served this meat. Paul was saying that if you chose to eat this meat or did not want to eat this meat not to let this be an offense to your brother. Now if you invited me to dinner and served a ham or lobster with a good bottle of wine I would eat it and give thanks to you and God for the delicious meal but I would not normally consume a food I believe is not meant to be eaten. I would not let my understanding offend anyone. I believe the purpose of distinguishing between clean and unclean meats is for health purposes. I am sure you will respond to this post when you do please include what your understanding of Is:66 15-17 is. Why does God pour out his fury on those that eat swines flesh and mice if they have been made clean? I didn't think my understanding on this subject would be very popular I am kind of use to it. My understanding on alot of biblical subjects is not in line with mainstrean Christianity. My name is Steven:)peace |
