NASB | 1 Kings 2:4 so that the LORD may carry out His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, 'If your sons are careful of their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.' |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Kings 2:4 so that the LORD may fulfill His promise concerning me, saying, 'If your sons are careful regarding their way [of life], to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and mind and with all their soul, you shall not fail to have a man (descendant) on the throne of Israel.' |
Bible Question:
In verse 4, David says that God’s promise regarding David having a descendant on the throne of Israel was conditional on the obedience of these descendants. Yet in 2 Samuel 7:16, God sets no conditions on his promise – David’s house will endure forever. Why is there a discrepancy between the two descriptions of God’s promise? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... 2Sa 7:16; 1Ki 2:4, 6:11-12, 8:25-26, 9:4-9; 1Ch 22:8-13; 28:1-10; Jer 22:30, 23:5-6; Luk 1:32-33, 3:23-34... God's day to you, Freddie36 The reason there is a difference is that Solomon was one of the sons of David. Solomon was given a condition. In Jeremiah 22:30, we see his line will stop ruling in Judah forever. They broke the condition. Later Jeremiah promised the coming of a son of David that will reign (23:5-6). This is via Nathan, another son of David (Luk 1:32-33, 3:23-34). The promise made to David continues. Searcher |
