Bible Question: Now that everyone has had a chance to really use and study the ESV Bible, what is your conclusion? Back in 2002 there were some long threads on it discussing it's quality, long term use and survival as an alternative to the NIV,NKJV, and NASB. What are your more recent thoughts? |
Bible Answer: My modern translation of choice since 1972 has been the New American Standard Bible. (I specify "modern translation" because to compare modern translations to the King James Version would be unfair to the modern translations.) I have used the ESV since 2001 and have repeatedly and carefully compared it with the NASB. Overall I find very little measurable, objective difference between the text of the NASB and that of the ESV. In my opinion, the two translations are virtually equal -- not the SAME, but virtually EQUAL in literalness, accuracy, and reliability. For word studies I have a slight preference for the NASB. For everything else I find myself currently reading and using the ESV far more than the NASB. For me to say which of the two I prefer above the other would be difficult, if not impossible. Therefore, I conclude that my translation of choice is the ESV -- AND the NASB. Grace to you, Kalos |
