Genesis 5:3 ¶ When Adam had lived a hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. |
Bible Question: I am confused about why this is the same wording "in his own likeness" as used in Genesis 5:1. Why wasn't Cain or Abel considered to be made in his likeness. Is this verse referring to Adam's likeness or God's? Any ideas? |
Bible Answer: Dear Rose, Adam was created in the likeness of God (Gen 5:1). The explicit statement in this verse that Adam's sons were in his own image. Adam could not pass on the image of God, who are all conceived in sin. According to Jewish tradition, Cain was not like Abel nor were his works like Abel's. Whereas Seth was like Abel and Seth's works were like Abel's. They believe that Seth was carefully instructed by his father Adam. Some even teach that the other children prior to Seth were more beast-like than man-like. In Him, Doc |
