AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 3:22 ¶ And the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), knowing [how to distinguish between] good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take from the tree of life as well, and eat [its fruit], and live [in this fallen, sinful condition] forever"-- |
Bible Question:
Hi, hope 2003 is starting out well for everyone. I am studying Genesis and have two questions. I read most of the posts on the tree of life (TOL) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It seems one conclusion in that long series of discussions was that Adam and Eve knew there was a TOL, but had not eaten from it. I hope someone might be able to provide some guidance on my two questions. Any thoughts or commentary references will be very helpful. Questions: 1. What facts and reasoning support a conclusion that prior to the fall Adam and Eve knew that the tree of life was the tree of life? 2. What facts and reasoning support a conclusion that prior to the fall Adam and Eve did not know that the tree of life was the tree of life? Thank you very much. John Bakas Riverview, Florida, U.S.A. Bible Answer: johnbakas, I cannot find evidence that they knew of the power of the TOL to make them live forever from what was "told" to them. However; I also feel that they knew everything about it based on the following scriptures: Gen 2 19Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. Heb 11 4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. Adam's pre-fall spiritual condition was probably better than Abel's. I feel that his faith was also probably better than Abel's. This combination of spiritual insight and faith allowed Adam to give appropriate names to all animals and birds. They also must have passed on the knowledge of the need for blood sacrifice to Cain and Abel. Sure they had God's example of slaying an animal to make clothing to cover their nakedness, where the leaves were not acceptable. So by their faith and spirituality, I would think that they did know the most important thing about the most important tree in the garden. Hope this helps, Pastor Glenn |
