Bible Question: I facilitate a Divorce Care Group at my church. Last night one of the men said his wife challenged him on this scripture. Saying it was ok for her to stay with her parents during the marriage. I didnt know how to answer his question. Is there any scripture or commentary that says the wife is equally obligated to leave her parents. |
Bible Answer: The bible does not specifically speak to the wife in terms of leaving her parents. It also indicates though that the two shall be one, which does not include a third party. Marriage is a start of a new family where two people unify. The rest of the family is"left" outside(if I may put it that way) for these two are beginning a new life. As a wife you assume the name of your husband, which means you have left your family. The new family and the oneness the bible talks about does not include the wife's family, it talks of her and her husband only. This is my understanding of the scripture you are reffering to and from the preachings I have listened to with regards to the latter topic! I hope I did justice to this Word! |
