Bible Question: I facilitate a Divorce Care Group at my church. Last night one of the men said his wife challenged him on this scripture. Saying it was ok for her to stay with her parents during the marriage. I didnt know how to answer his question. Is there any scripture or commentary that says the wife is equally obligated to leave her parents. |
Bible Answer: vabnker This verse has different ramifications than we may first realize. In Old Testament times when a young man married he and his bride lived with the husband's parents. That alone may give us some clue to this directive. A young man upon getting betrothed would begin to build to or add on to his parents house. Adding a place for him and his bride. Upon completion, decided by the Father, the young man would assembly his wedding entourage and sending word ahead, he would leave his Mother and Father and go to collect his bride. She of course would be ready and waiting for her husband. They would then become a part of the marriage processional and return to the grooms home where they would enjoy a banquet and of course consummate the marriage. Marriage brings two families together the brides and the grooms and results in yet a third family. Each family should support and look out for the well being of the other families but they also must know and understand the hierarchy of the family as God created it. Husband is to love the wife, the wife is to submit or give preference to the husband and children are to be in obedience to their parents. There is little room for in-laws from either side to interfere or attempt to influence the other families. The Groom had to do two things first leave his parents to go to his bride but he also had to ensure for peace and harmony that his parents did not interfere excessively in their marriage that living in such close proximity of his parents would invite. If we know and understand the wedding ritual we understand Jesus’ comments: my fathers house has many rooms I go to prepare a place for you. Jesus telling the disciples only the father knew the date and time of His return. And wedding feast to be held in heaven (the Father’s home). I think you need to explore this situation with this couple to understand what is being asked and whether there may be a problem. Perhaps it was an idle question or perhaps there is an in law involvement that needs to be addressed. EdB |
