Bible Question:
Thankyou Tim! 2:1 Your note on the meaning of 'host' was interesting and quite possibly the key for me here, so I will further explore that one. 2:2 I agree with you here. 2:3 God doing other kinds of work all the time was part of my argument for saying that we may very well still be in the 6th day, ie as He has not yet rested. Does that make sense? I need you to test my thinking here - if that is alright. 2:5 Yep, I agree with you here. This starts a more detailed account of day 6, but Tim where does this account end? Thankyou so much for your help, deb |
Bible Answer: Greetings Deb! Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I have been both sick and swamped the last few days. :-) Let's look at your questions. 1) Did God rest yet? Gen. 2:2 says that God 'rested'. The verb here is a Qal Imperfect. As such, it refers to a simple past action. Thus, it could mean one of two things. First, it could mean that God rested, never to work again. In this context, the word would only be restricted to creation. Secondly, it could mean that He rested on a regular basis. Either way, the verb, since it is past tense, clearly says that God rested. So, in the context of your question, we cannot still be in the 6th day of Gen. 1-2, since God has already rested on the 7th day according to Gen. 2:2. 2) Where does the account end? The answer to this is a little more subjective. I could answer in two ways. a) The account could end at Gen. 2:25, since this is the last mention of a creative act. Hence, we have passed beyond day six. However, the text does not specifically say so. How one understand the term 'day' also impacts this question. I prefer a literal 24 hour day. Thus, I would have difficulty in seeing anything beyond chapter two as being part of the 6th day. b) I could also answer structurally. You mentioned earlier the phrase "This is the account of...". This phrase is used structurally to seprate sections throughout Genesis. In fact, it is used 10 times (I believe). It's next occurance is found in Gen. 6:9. So, this would be at least the structural end to the section. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
