AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 1:14 ¶ Then God said, "Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God's provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years; [Gen 8:22] |
Bible Question: What does Genesis 1:14 mean when it says that both sun and moon divide day from night? I realize how the sun does this but what is the moon's role? The ancients had the same phenomenon of a visible daytime moon, so it obviously wasn't a case of scientific ignorance, so what did Moses have in mind as he wrote this? If it is possible to translate it as "to separate the day and the night" then the confusion is cleared up, as it would make both objects dividers of their respective realms, but is this exegetically possible? If not, what is the answer then? Thanks. |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... "God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also" (Gen 1:16). God's day to you reyvin, Badal is the Hebrew word used and means to divide or separate. It doesn't say sun and moon ... it says greater light and lesser light. It is possible to aviod saying sun and moon because they were pagan gods and God didn't want confusion, so Ke inspired Moses to say greater light and lesser light. Notice they govern each - if we see the moon at night ... it is the brightess object, the ruler. The stars also help (Psa 136:9). If we see the moon during the day, it is pale and is not the governing body. Searcher |
