AMPLIFIED 2015 | Genesis 1:14 ¶ Then God said, "Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God's provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years; [Gen 8:22] |
Bible Question (short): What is the moons role in separating? |
Question (full): What does Genesis 1:14 mean when it says that both sun and moon divide day from night? I realize how the sun does this but what is the moon's role? The ancients had the same phenomenon of a visible daytime moon, so it obviously wasn't a case of scientific ignorance, so what did Moses have in mind as he wrote this? If it is possible to translate it as "to separate the day and the night" then the confusion is cleared up, as it would make both objects dividers of their respective realms, but is this exegetically possible? If not, what is the answer then? Thanks. |
