81 | Need feedback on Genesis? | Bible general Archive 4 | skccab | 210641
Shalom Keliy You have either the mother or the son mixed up. Rebecca gave birth to Esau (and Jacob). Hagar gave birth to Ishmael, Abram's son. Sarah gave birth to Isaac, AbraHAM's "only" son. By the way, I like your Hebrew name lots. Cheri |

Shalom Corrective, You are absolutely right!! I checked the Hebrew text and it sure is yod hei vav hei. I only sparsely use my Hebrew text cos my vocabulary is so small. Thank you for the correction. I should have checked that first. Lesson learned. :o) Cheri |

Corrective, shalom How about filling out your user profile? It would be very nice if you would. Most of the rest of us have done so. I think God's definite, specific promises and words are quite "significant." Hebrew is a very action-oriented language. (In fact, there are no past or future tenses, it's all present verb related words.) If it wasn't God probably wouldn't bother changing certain peoples names from one thing meaning something specific to something else meaning what he wants that person to portray. Ishmael was born to Abram by Hagar. The promise was made TO Sarai as well, Gen. 17:15-22 to Abram regarding Sarai. (At this time their names are changed, and we see that Abraham wanted The Seed to be Ishmael, and God promised to increase him because he was Abram's son.) But....in Gen. 18:9-15 In Sarah's hearing/presence God once again promises AbraHAM of the birth of Issac. Isaac means laughter, Sarah laughed at the hearing of such news, and God gently chides her for that, then about 9months later she laughed with joy at the birth of this boy. Cheri |

Shalom Corrective I choose to go with the vav for the simple reason being that so far I know of no Hebrew words that have much of a w sound in them, but many that have the v sound. Maybe it's the difference between ashkanasics and sephardics pronounciations (please forgive bad spellings). lol I tend to use sephardic Hebrew. And no I don't know where to find Encyclopedia Judaica online. If you find out, let us know. Cheri |

Corrective, Thank you, very interesting. I've done the occult thing, the other eastern religions thing, etc. The only reality turned out to be the God of Israel after all :o). Cheri |

Corrective, The point was that the promise of the Redeemer was to be the son of Abraham AND Sarah, that the names were significant - not that anyone laughed. I just added that cos it was in the passages cited. Cheri |

Dear DL, Sounds like you're straddling the fence? Which is your choice? God is irrelevant or you are one of His perfect works? You can't have it both ways (who would want it that way?). I pray you choose the latter Shalom Cheri |

Morning Hank, There you go - I realized my error the second I hit submit, but oh well. Didn't think it was that important to re-post a correction. The gist of the post remained - which chapter 3??? lol We are all pretty good, but not THAT good :o) Have a great Sunday Cheri |

96 | Prayer Request from My Family | Bible general Archive 4 | skccab | 212024
Shalom Shelly, I asked these people because they are friends and family and in the past 2 1/2 years sharing prayer and praise has been a part of our study here. Prayer and praise is a very big part of Bible study. Without it all you get is head knowledge which is useless. If I offended you, I sure am sorry for that. Cheri |

Sweet Hank, I knew that in my heart concerning all the active regulars, too many to name, but we knnow who they are. I agree, just simple every day prayers should go somewhere else but this particular problem seemed to need some very STRONG prayer warriors - so I choose to make the request of my family. :o) THank you for your note, it brought much comfort to my troubled heart. I love all you guys (and girls) - have a wonderful weekend. Cheri |

Messenger, How much studying of Hebrew have you done? I haven't done too much, but what I have found out is that I have yet to find a word with 4 consonants that have only 2 sylables. The yod is a sylable in and of itself, then there are 3 more consonants - there should be at least 2 more sylables, Yahweh just doesn't seem to work. Yahoveh with the Yaho run together as a single sylable is much more likely. I haven't found a site that gives Biblical Hebrew a "w" sound yet, and I haven't found a site that give ancient Hebrew pictographs a "w" sound either. The Vav has always been a "v", an "o" or a "u" sound (maybe once upon a time a "w"? but I've not seen it yet). I'm sure there are Hebrew experts on this Forum, please show me if I'm wrong, cos I'm trying to learn Hebrew. And tell me if I'm wrong about the prounouciation too, but I can't think of one word with 4 consonants and only 2 sylables. :o) In fact, off the top of my head, I can't think of any English words with 4 consonants and only 2 sylables except where the 2 same consonants are next to each other, i.e. little, rabbit, etc. Hope I didn't put my foot in my mouth (if I did, at least I've had my bath tonight, lol) Cheri |
