781 | Pilate's response to King of the Jews? | Luke 23:3 | prayon | 6560
In Jesus day a death sentence had to be approved by a Roman official. Since the Priests wanted Jesus killed they knew they had to make up charges against Him that the Romans would go for since the charge of blasphemy (His arresting charge)would have no meaning to the Romans. Since Pilate was the govenor of Judea where Jerusalem was located they needed to get his permission. Pilate recognized the obvious plot against Jesus (Matt 27:18) and Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent (John 18:30,38, 19:4). His wife also knew the innocence of this man, (Matt27:19). Herod also confirmed his innocence, (Luke 23:15). I believe that in His spirit he knew that Jesus was who He said He was. I also think that His wife confirmed the fact when she stated because of her dream. I can find no place that says Pilate knew because of a certain thing. We know that Pilate did believe Him for two reasons: 1) Pilate called Him King in John 19:14, and 2) because Pilate wrote the sign on the cross saying that "This is Jesus the King of the Jews". It does say that he was greatly amazed at Jesus (Matt 27:14). His conscience also told him that Jesus was who He said He was (John 19:7-9). Being the govenor of Judea where Jesus had His ministry I am sure that Pilate had heard of all the miraculous things that Jesus had done. Pilate did not stand for what he believed because he was threatened by the Jews that they would cause him great trouble (Matt 27:24, Luke 23:23). ***It is interesting to note that all aspects of Jesus trial were illegal. Jewish Law stated the following: 1) No trials were to be heard at night. All criminal cases must be tried and completed during the daytime hours. 2) No such cases were to be held during the Passover season. 3) Only if the verdict were "not guilty" could the case be completed on the day it commenced. 4) In all trials, the evidence for the innocence of the accused must be presented to the court before the evidence of his guilt was cited. 5) If the verdict was guilty, a night must elapse before announcing the verdict to allow for feelings of mercy. 6) No decision of the Sanhedrin was valid unless it was made in its own council chamber with one another. 7) A false witness was punishable by death, (Matt 26:59-60). 8)It is illegal to cause someone to testify against himself. Have a blessed day prayon |

782 | Tranfiguration: What and Why? | Matt 17:2 | prayon | 6448
Hank, the transformation is both a startling and powerful event in the life of Christ. It has significance in the story of God's redemption of humanity and it reveals to the disciples something of the divine glory that Jesus enjoyed with His Father from the beginning of time. The transformation took place at night, on a high mountain (Matt 17:1) when our Lord was praying (luke 9:28). The mountain was probably Mount Herman near Caesarea Philippi which was about 9,400 feet in height. After Peter's confession Jesus took a time out from His ministry to pour out His needs to the Father for wisdom, confirmation, guidance and strength. He knew that the Cross was fast approaching. Undoubtedly He also prayed for His disciples that they would understand what was to come. There were many things accomplished by the Transformation. 1) Christ's glory was revealed to the disciples. Isaiah said in 53:2 that "he had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him." No external marks of any type distinguished Jesus as being the Messiah. It was when the disciples saw Jesus transformed that they had their confirmation that Jesus truly was the Son of God. 2) The transformation was also a confirmation to Jesus that He was on the right road and had His Father's full approval. 3) The transformation also allowed Jesus to get the strength to He would need to get through the days ahead. It is believed He did this through the fellowship with Moses and Elijah. **It is interesting to note that it was suggested that Jesus could of returned to heaven at that time, for He was without sin and death had no power over Him. 4) God revealed Himself through His "Shekinah" glory and commanded the disiples to hear and obey His Son. prayon |

783 | Led by man or called by God? | Acts 2:39 | prayon | 6192
The human agent is just a "tool" that God uses when we allow Him to. A member of the trinity is the one who leads someone to Christ.
784 | if we know somebody has a problem with | Matthew | prayon | 6191
Matt 5 is saying that if we suddenly remember that another person feels something against us we are to leave our gift at the alter and go and attempt to straighten things out with the person. If we don't we will not feel the consciousness of His pleasure in us and our gift until we have obeyed His commands first. In Matt 18 Jesus is saying that when there is hard feelings between a brother and a sister it can lead to disunity and spiritual weakness in the church. Therefore if another has wronged you or the church without cause, your work is to draw that one back to God, by love, by realizing that you too are tempted and sin. Your actions should never be to ignore but to win that person back to personal fellowship and fellowship with God. |

785 | How is kingdom of heaven like leaven? | Matt 13:33 | prayon | 6164
The flour (milled grains) is said to represent the kingdom of God comprised of single grains of wheat united in one body. In the bible, yeast is usually spoken of symbolically to mean evil as in Matt 16:11. Paul tells us to get rid of the old yeast from our lives because a little yeast can work through a whole batch of dough (Gal 5:9). Therefore it is believed that Jesus was warning the disciples the possibility of false doctrine, the yeast, being inserted into the body of Christ and affecting the whole body (Acts 20:29-30).
786 | Yeast of Pharisees and Sadducees? | Matt 16:11 | prayon | 6163
The yeast is the false teachings of the Pharisees and the Sadducees that concentrated on the outward appearance but ignored the inner life. The stressed tradition ablve God's word as well as hypocracy and unbelief. Jesus was warning the disciples that their own spiritual life could be affected by the corrupting yeast all around them. It helps to better understand it if you think of baking a loaf of bread and how the yeast gets worked through the bread until none of the dough is left untouched.
787 | The Temptation of Christ | Matt 4:1 | prayon | 6149
To add to Steve's reply; Their was also a purpose in Christs temptation. Satan tried to make Jesus sin by allowing Himself to be tempted and thus make His redemptive work impossible. Satan also wanted Jesus to deflect the Lords aim so that He would use worldly methods and give in to the materialistic aims of those around Him to reach His goal instead of using God's weapons of faith, the Holy Spirit and the suffering on the cross.
788 | Who are the poor in spirit? | Matt 5:3 | prayon | 6142
Just to add a little - The reason the poor in spirit are happy is that they have the kingdom of heaven. The word poor comes from a Greek word that means "to make oneself little, to crouch." The meaning here comes from Isaiah 57:15;66:2. It describes the persons who are spiritually hungry, the opposite of self-centered complacency. The word poor is often synonymous with the people of God, in the sense of their humble dependence on Him. To be aware of your spiritual needs and to go to Christ is to know the incredible joy of being included in the kingdom of heaven. This is what Jesus means when He said; "Blessed are you the poor that have already come to Him".
789 | Noah and his family | 1 Pet 3:20 | prayon | 6046
Genesis 6:13 says that God was determined to make an end to ALL flesh, however, Noah had found favor with the Lord (Gen 6:8). God instructed Noah to take his household, Noah, his wife, their 3 sons and the sons wives, into the ark, for Noah alone was righteous before God (Gen 7:1). Genesis 7:23 tells us that the God blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, human beings and animals...only Noah was left and those in the ark. It was a physical salvation. We now know that this did truly take place in the physical because God has allowed the ark to be found on the top of Mt Arafat. prayon
790 | A divorced pastor in ministry? | 1 Tim 3:2 | prayon | 6026
Yes. Paul was probably not referring here to having one wife in the entire lifetime but was instead referring to polygamy and promiscuity. His focus was the leader setting a strict personal discipline that was pure in conduct in their lives.
791 | What does 1 Tim 3:2 mean? | 1 Tim 3:2 | prayon | 6025
When Paul says that church leaders should be married only once, he is prohibiting both polygamy and promiscuity. This does not prohibit an unmarried man from becoming a leader or a widowed leader from remarrying. The main idea that Paul was focusing on here was that a leader must be pure in conduct, disiplined in habits, balanced in outlook, and free from those sins that mark the socity, and the age in which he lives. 792 | What is prayer? | Acts 1:14 | prayon | 6024
Prayer is any form of communication with God. It is the primary activity involved in worship. It can be the act of petitioning, praising, giving thanks, complaining, confession, intercession (Psalm 122:6-9), or asking for guidance (Acts12:12-13), wisdom or direction. Prayer can be vocal or silent, individual or corporate. Prayer can be offered at any time or place (Jonah 2:1); the New Testament tells us to pray without ceasing (1Thes. 5:17) Posture for prayer is frequently mentioned in the bible but never in a way to prescribe any particular position, for example kneeling with arms outstretched (1Kings 8:54), head bowed with hands lifted (Neh 8:6, 1Tim 2:8), prostrate (Matt 2:11), standing (Luke 18:11,13). The effects of prayer are numerous. Lives can be changed, protection given, circumstances, attitudes or events changed (Ex 32:9-14, Acts 12.5, Is 38:1-5). We can be given wisdom (James 1:5) or direction. Jesus said in Mark 9:23 "all things can be done for the one who believes". Therefore prayer can accomplish anything. Prayer is always heard by God (Psalm 4:3). Prayer is always answered by God, sometimes He gives us what we pray for and sometimes that answer is no or not yet. |

793 | Biblical support for animals in heaven? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 6000
The only writer who addresses the question directly is Ecclesiastes in 3:19-21, who states," For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so does the other. They all have the same breath, and humans have no advantage over the animals, for all is vanity. All go to one place; all are from the dust and all turn to dust again. Who knows whether the human spirit goes upward and the spirit of animals goes downward to the earth?" In 1860 Florence Nightinggale wrote that a small pet "is often an excellent companion for the sick." The psychological benefits of caring for an animal can also be enourmous. Pet's offer us a nonjudgemental, accepting and unconditional love that can be very healing. Animals can teach us about love. Animals can without words open to us new dimensions of life that are wonderfully transforming. Animals and children are much alike - they both have an innocence and a lack of pretense that seem to radiate goodness. I leave you with this thought - If it's true that "those who abide in love, abide in God," then animals can bring our spirits into closer communion with our maker bwecause they truly know how to love unconditionally. And if this is the case do we believe God would not of made some provision for them in heaven as a reward for doing His work so fulfillingly? prayon |

794 | Three way split? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 5823
I looked in 3 commentaries and got 2 different answers. The first is the one I like - That the cities division in to 3 parts is symbolic of its complete destruction. Three being the symbol/number of completeness. The second one I checked said that is could possibly be the world wide city instead of Jerusalem. The 3rd had no comment - I guess this is another one of those "Ahhhhh-soooo" questions.

797 | Urgent and swift help needed!! | Matt 24:11 | prayon | 5813
You are correct that every item you mentioned goes against the word of God. In Matt 24:11 Jesus warns us that there will be many false prophets in the end times. It seems to me that this man clearly falls into that category. I would consider him dangerous to the saints and especially the baby saints. It sounds to me that he is preaching the message people want to hear instead of the gospel. I am not sure what can be done about him since your pastor is not willing to stand srong for the truth. The pastors preaching on the opposite occationally is not going to save many that fall for this mans word. I'm sure that Satan has him truly deceived. I would suggest this - PRAY. One of 2 things has happened; either you are not meant to be in that church or God is going to use you to stop this man. I am also going to refer this question to someone(s) more knowledgeable than I for possible things that can be done. Remember God is a God of order. May God give you wisdom in the situation.
798 | I need answers to several questions . | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 5715
1) Joel 2:28a, 29 and Acts 2:17a, 18: In the last days I shall pour out my Spirit on ALL flesh, and your sons and your DAUGHTERS will prophecy... Even upon my slaves, BOTH men and WOMEN, in those days I will pour out my Spirit and they shall prophecy". If Christ is pouring out His spirit on us and giving us prophecys I don't believe He still means for us to be quiet. 2. God still does speak to us but through His son. He can do this in a variety of ways including through His word, through other people, or through sermons or messages to name a couple. 3. I will refer you to a question of 5/17 - "should music be allowed in church?" Throughout the Old Testament there are numerous scriptures of musical instruments being used in church for worship and praise. You can find many of them in the Psalms. 4) There was a long debate on this question last month. There were 2 questions asked by Charis -"Communion, how often?" and question "Weekly Communion?" These were asked on 4/28 and 4/29. There are a lot of opinions and you can draw your own conclusion because the bible does not say specifically. Hope this helps. prayon |

799 | Author of Ruth and Time frame of writing | Ruth | prayon | 5705
According to Talmudic tradition Samuel wrote the book of Ruth but the book contains no clue as to who truly wrote it. The favored opiniion is that it was written between the tenth to the eighth century BC during the period of the Monarchy. However one source (Life Application Bible) put it between 1375-1050 BC.
800 | Should music be allowed in church? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 5642
I wish I knew where the father has gotten an idea like that! Biblical references to music are numerous because of the essential role it played in all aspects of the life of the people of the bible. Since he said he is a New Testament Christian I will start in the New Testament. Music was important in the worship of the early church. In the earliest Christian communities music was not set within regular and repeated patterns of worship but was allowed some spontaneity. Eph. 5:19 says that "as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts". James 5:13 asks if any are cheerful, then they should sing songs of praise. 1Cor 14:26 says that when you come together and someone has a hymn let it be done for the building up. Col 3:16 says "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly....and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God. Both of these scriptures have to do with worshipping God and one of the places we are to do that is in church! Rev 4:10 talks about the 24 elders who fall on the floor and casting their crowns on the fllor before God sing! "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven". Exodus 15 talks or singing to the Lord. In Psalms alone sing and singing is mentioned 70 times!! Psalm 47:6 tells us to "sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to out King, sing praises! Psalm 81:1-2 tell us to "Sing aloud to God our strength...Raise a song, sound the tamborine, the sweet lyre with the harp." There are many more scriptures too numerous to mention. If this isn't enough go to the Strongs Concordance and look under sing. prayon |
