761 | Can anyone tell how he understand that? | John 6:54 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150231
If one concludes that our Lord Jesus broke no laws established by God under the Old Covenant, then one would also have to conclude that Jesus was not making a literal reference to His flesh and His blood. Otherwise, Jesus disobeyed the Law established in Leviticus 17:10-11. But in all, I'm just not real certain. However, rather than focusing on individual beliefs and pushing personal opinions that further confuse and ultimately harm someone in search of a beneficial answer, as some have done, I believe you should view the referenced Scripture as such: Some believe the bread and wine actually become Christ's flesh and blood. Some believe the bread and wine do not physically change but Christ is spiritually present. Yet others believe the bread and wine are merely symbolic. Though many will differ in their opinions of what it actually is or what it becomes, the common sentiment among Christians is that the Lord's Supper is an important element and that however we view the bread and wine, when we partake, it strengthens us spiritually. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Pertaining to what has been presented in this forum on this issue, and many others, all sides present very strong arguments for their position. But keep in mind, they are human arguments, and they are fallible. What is not fallible however, is the Word of God. Seek it and ask for your answer. Don’t be surprised if you get it. WOS |

762 | Christian friends dont want stop sinning | 1 Cor 5:11 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150177
And Paul later followed up 1 Corinthians 5:11 in the second letter to the Corinthians in our Bible. 2 Corinthians 2:5-11 (NIV) 5If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent—not to put it too severely. 6The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. 7Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. 9The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. 10If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. 1 Thessalonians 5:11(NIV) Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15(NIV) 14And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. Hebrews 3:13 (NIV) But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. Hebrews 10:25 (NIV) Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. If you are strong enough, you should attempt to encourage and build your friend up. Rebuke and correct. However, if you are in danger of falling into the same practices by associating with him, remove yourself. WOS |

763 | HOW IMPORTANT IS FASTING? | Matt 6:16 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150115
The following link may help you. http://www.gotquestions.org/fasting.html If he feels secure in his relationship with the Lord, he may not feel that he is in need of fasting. That's okay. Fasting is a way to focus on God and to bring you closer to Him. Our relationship with God is a personal one. Only He and I know truly what state our relationship with one another is in. If the Pastor feels he is that close to God and is comfortable in that relationship then it seems appropriate that he would see fasting as unnecessary. I feel there is always room for us to draw more near to God, but that is just me. WOS |

764 | Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? | Gen 4:5 | Wild Olive Shoot | 150084
Robert, the Scripture quoted below would indicate it was in fact Cain’s actions, his attitude, that caused God to reject his offering. The verse from Hebrews states it all: Abel’s sacrifice was better because of his faith. Not because of what it was. His heart was right with God and Cain's was not. 1 John 3:11This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 1 John 3:19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. Hebrews 11:4By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. WOS |

1 Corinthians 2 - Real Wisdom From God David Guzik Study Guide for 1 Corinthians Chapter 2 3. (12-16) How we can receive this wisdom a. It comes only by the Holy Spirit, who already has been received by every believer b. Christians combine spiritual things with spiritual words; they use words and concepts taught only by the Holy Spirit c. The natural man (psuchikos), lives as if there were nothing beyond this physical life; it is the kind of life common to all animals i. There is nothing inherently sinful in "natural" life, but it is utterly devoid of spiritual insight ii. The natural man is unsaved; too many Christians still think like natural men, refusing to spiritually discern things d. Paul is not saying that every Christian is above any challenge (after all, much of this letter is criticism); but he is saying that no natural man is equipped to judge a spiritual man e. Isaiah 40:13 refers to the mind of Yahweh; but Paul has no trouble inserting "Christ" for "Yahweh"; because Jesus is Yahweh! C. Observations 1. This has been one of the most misapplied passages of the Bible; almost every form of spiritual elitism has appealed to it, claiming that they have special spiritual insight or revelation other Christians lack 2. Paul will distinguish between different classes of Christians in chapter 3; but so far, he has been contrasting those who receive the "foolish" wisdom of God with those who reject it (saved and unsaved) 3. Paul is challenging the very issue of our day: We think we're so smart; but God's wisdom, given by revelation, rules Guzik, David. "Study Guide for 1 Corinthians Chapter 2." 766 | Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? | Gen 4:5 | Wild Olive Shoot | 149923
Robert, I think if you look at the rejection of Cain’s offering in the light that it did not measure up to Abel’s, then, you would have to admit God showed favoritism, which he doesn’t. Abel gave from what he had. Cain gave from what he had. One was no better than the other. So long as what is being offered is the best of what you have and it is offered with a pure heart, it is pleasing to God. Now, one can still offer the best to God, but not offer it in sincerity, then, it is no longer pleasing to God. Judging by Cain’s reactions after the fact, it is pretty straightforward to deduce that his actions and heart weren’t in the proper place prior to the offering. Therefore, God rejected it. Matthew 5:23-24 23"Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. I think it was a matter of not having his heart in the right place, not necessarily what he was offering. Keep in mind; God did not reject Cain, just what he offered. Cain was a farmer, he offered from his harvest. Maybe, just maybe, he didn’t have a choice lamb to offer. Do you really think God would hold that against him? WOS |

767 | Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? | Gen 4:5 | Wild Olive Shoot | 149893
Possibly, but when you read Genesis 4:6-7 you see that God gives Cain a chance to respond correctly which would indicate it was something that Cain himself had done inappropriately. After the offering was rejected, God gave Cain a chance to correct the wrong and even encouraged him to do so. It appears that Cain refused. WOS |

768 | Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? | Gen 4:5 | Wild Olive Shoot | 149883
The Bible does not actually say why the Lord did not accept Cain’s offering. One can only speculate the Cain had an improper attitude or the offering was not up to God’s standards. Proverbs 21:27 tells us that God does not like the sacrifices of evil people or sacrifices made with clandestine reasons in mind. God does evaluate both our hearts and the quality of what we offer him. God should get the best of us, whatever the offering is. After all, what we give to God reflects our true attitude toward Him. We should be joyful givers in the same. Malachi 1:6-14 is good for understanding unworthy sacrifices and God’s attitude of them. WOS |

770 | 1 Thess. 5:17 | Jer 29:12 | Wild Olive Shoot | 149843
Does prayer really help? Yes. Prayer helps in many ways. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 shows us that prayer can help us to lead peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness and that it pleases God. It also helps us to overcome temptation, to keep us from sinning. We pray for strength to overcome because our bodies are weak but our spirits are willing. (Matthew 26:41) Prayer also helps us to focus on God, which is where are focus should be anyhow. Psalm 77 shows us how God can shift our focus to where it should be when we pray. As Asaph prayed, he began with a whole bunch of “I”, v1-12. But as he continued in prayer, God re-focused Asaph to worshipping Him, v13-20. Prayer can put us under God’s control. Who better to lead us? Many people see prayer as a chance to ask God to perform some sort of cosmic trick. The attempt to use prayer for good fortune or spectacular events instead of using it to desire God’s pardon or love. Luke 6:19 shows how many react to God and the sense of His magic. But rather than using prayer to control God, which is futile to begin with, we should use prayer to submit ourselves to God, to come under His control. This is only a sampling of what prayer can do. What kind of prayers does God answer? I believe He answers those that are aligned with His will, although, we see times when He answered a prayer in the affirmative to ungrateful or lustful requests as with the quail and following plague in Numbers 11. So be careful what you pray for. For requests made that are aligned with God’s will, He answers them in His own way, in His own time. We must be open to what God can do and allow Him to answer His way, even if we seem the situation as impossible. 1 John 5:14-15(NIV) 14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. Galatians 4:4 (NIV) But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, God’s timing is perfect. At the right time He will respond. Trust His judgment and timing. God does hear and answer the prayers of those who are His. Now the answer may not always be in the affirmative. It may be no, or even wait. But He will hear and He will answer. Psalm 4:3 (NIV) Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD will hear when I call to him. How can one develop an attitude of prayer? True prayer is an outpouring of the soul or a crying out to God. In true prayer we see our guilt but also our joy of knowing we are forgiving. We not only bow to God in search of His mercy, but we offer thanksgiving for the grace He offers. Develop a prayerful attitude by thinking about it and doing it. Sow a thought; reap an action. Sow an action; reap a habit. Sow a habit; reap a character. Sow a character; reap a destiny. Martin Luther said prayer should be “the first business of the morning and the last at night.” He said to “cultivate the habit of falling asleep with the Lord’s Prayer on your lips every evening when you go to bed and again every morning when you get up.” Just do it. Don’t worry about not knowing what to pray; Romans 8:26(NIV) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. It seems that the prayer I have been hearing are no more than begging God for things? Is that the object of prayer? In 1 Kings 8:56-60 we see Solomon praying. It is a good pattern for us to follow. It contained 5 basic requests. Prayed for God’s presence; The desire to do God’s will; The desire and ability to obey God; Help with each day; Spread the Kingdom of God throughout the world. Jesus then showed us in Matthew 6:5-15 the example of how our prayers should be structured. Praise God; Pray for His work; Pray for daily needs; Pray for help in daily struggles. The object of prayer, I think, is to first honor God as God with praise and thanksgiving. Then humble yourself and ask for His help in your life. Submit yourself to Him. Then ask how you may serve, not so much what can you get out of it. Prayer should, could and can and will bring you closer to the Almighty God. God will answer those prayers that are aligned with His will. Matthew 21:22 (NIV) If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." WOS |

Longed winded maybe:), but I look forward to hearing from you. However, I have stated in an earlier post that maybe it was time for me to be quiet on the subject, so if I do by chance want to respond... I'll speak softly. WOS Doc, if you would enlighten us a little more concerning Luther. How can one be sure what Luther penned was in fact correct? I guess this is for me to better understand. As I've said, Doctrine instated by man, without apostolic appointment from Christ is a touchy subject with me as I’m sure it is with many others. In fact this forum may not be the proper place to discuss since we seem to be getting back to denomination divides. But in any case, thanks for you responses. "Sound doctrine always divides. It breaks our heart, but sound doctrine always divides." At least until we obtain the full measure of Christ. Ephesians 4(NIV) 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. |

But even the Gospel of John tells us that it is not complete. It would simply be impossible to record everything. I believe it is the completed revelation to us from God. But the Spirit works through us in more ways than just the written word. That's my point. Don't limit God. Who are we to know the mind of God. WOS |

If a person says "I don't know where in the Bible that is, but I experienced it, and the Spirit in me confirms it," that person is on dangerous ground. We don't confirm truth or base our beliefs on subjective feelings. The Spirit confirmed it with Paul. Are we not privy to the same Spirit? Romans 9:1(NIV) I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 4:3-5 (NIV) 3I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. WOS |

"The Protestant principle that the Church should always be striving to conform to Scripture. So should all Christians!" Doc, I whole-heartedly agree with this. We must continue to search Scripture for in God's revelation to us we find the truth. We must realize that truth and live it out in order for us to live and serve in a manner worthy of God. However, many individuals don't see the reformation as such, rather it is viewed as a separation. Martin Luther was seeking to separate from the Church he was seeking reform. But how could the “true church”, that is one headed by Christ, built on the foundation of the Prophets and the Apostles, go astray? So did Luther in demanding reform admit that Christ failed in leading His Church or that the true Church wasn’t in existence? Evidently, his protest for reform, to keep the Church, not to separate from it or abolish it, shows his respect for the Church as being true. My fear is in the establishing of doctrine instituted by men who were not directly commissioned by Christ Himself for teaching doctrine with the authority of an Apostle. The Millerites and their misinterpretation of the Second Coming is an example of what, man without the authority of Christ can do to Scripture. That is, to install teachings and doctrine that contradict the Word, which Sola Scripture denounces as it dictates God’s word, The Bible, is the final authority, not mans. How can man simply look at Scripture and decide they can know the mind of God? God in His infinite wisdom does not reveal all to us, just what He deemed necessary. With all of that said, I profess that I do look to Scripture as the final authority. But I dare not add anything to it as doctrine. All doctrine must in fact, be supported by Scripture but to take the text and use it out of context to support a doctrine instated by man is a very dangerous and unscriptural act of placing man’s knowledge above God’s. With that said, I thank you so very much for your comments and instruction. They have proven to be very effective and productive for me. WOS |

“Even Jesus- as God in the flesh- did not counter satan with His "experience" in Matt 4. He quoted the WRITTEN word! That's a pretty strong endorsement as to its' authority”. And the Written Word Jesus spoke of was the New Testament??? In all my learning, since there was no New Testament for Christ or the Apostles to refer to, they spoke of the Old Testament and the oral teachings they themselves had rendered as the word of God. When they spoke of the Word, it was not only the written word to which they speaking. Romans 10:17 (NASB) So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. 1Peter 1:25 (NASB) BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER " And this is the word which was preached to you. Faith comes from hearing, which is an oral communication. And 1 Peter tells us the word was preached, again an oral communication. So where does it mention that the written word will supplant the oral teachings of Christ and the Apostles? Just something to think about. WOS |

Doc, thanks a bunch. That's what I'm talking about. If one is going to point to a particular doctrine or teaching that is not easily referenced within The Bible, due to name or word translation, then for the benefit of all, it needs to be explained so all have a chance to understand for themselves. One thing, if you would explain just a bit further: You stated that "In 1517 a declaration was made that the faithful would no longer forsake the Word in favor of tradition". But tradition is still part of the faithful's life, just not held above Scripture, correct? 2 Thessalonians 2:15(NASB)So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. 1 Corinthians 12(NIV):3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. 4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. The Spirit works through us and throughout us as He pleases. He moves us as He pleases. The Word itself testifies to different areas and in different ways we can be moved. Now I for one have not had the good fortune of experiencing anything close to what has been described in this thread, but I will not limit God and his ability to do so. WOS |

Just a question. Show me where in the Bible I may find the term "Sola Scripture" as being the word of God? Isn't Sola Scripture in fact a man's teaching that didn't arrive for thousands of years after our New Testament was penned by the God inspired men who wrote it. I ask because this is a Bible Study Forum and not all may be familiar with Luther's teaching since we can't directly find it in the Bible. It would be helpful to those who are not sure of a certain teaching if references were used that we all could easily view. WOS |
