703 | Is God Sovereign in the Church today? | Rom 1:22 | humbledbyhisgrace | 168569
Hello Brother Brad! I just want to share some thoughts on this one and through out a few questions :-) Question: Does anyone think "the church" is not exactly where God wants it to be today? If the answer is no, would that not question God's Sovereignty? In my understanding it would. You ask "What are your thoughts as to why this is?" based on what A.W. Pink had written. I think that's a great question and exactly the type of questions we should be asking ourselves. What is God doing? What is His will for the church at this point in time? What do I, as His servant need to be doing for His glory and His church? I don't think we should be surprised at what mankind is doing for we know them to be corrupted and hopeless without God's intervention. For me the "why" leads to the question, what is God showing us and what are we the church suppose to do with it? There are many today and throughout history like A.W. Pink and the many examples we see throughout the pages of the bible that God has given a passion and a hunger for His word. It's these people that are able to see the contradictions between what the word of God says and what mankind teaches and twist to create their own doctrines. I think that is exactly what A.W. Pink is pointing out. So, going back to your question, why is it like this? Hummmm.... I of course don't have the answer to that. But I'm confident in that it fits God's sovereign plan. In my way of thinking, God is clearly showing us the corruption and false teachings of mankind probably more so then ever before. Why is that and what are we the church to do? "What can be done about it?" If you have been given His truth, never compromise on it, remember where it came from and share it with others as if their life depended on it (which it does!). For me, the farther I see the teachings of mankind move away from the word of God, the clearer the word of God becomes to me. The stronger my desire becomes to know it and understand it and share it with others. I for one am so thankful to God for His word and those that He has given to His church that do not and will not compromise on His word and will stand up and shout when it is trampled on. Just another thought on what we can do. This may seem like a radical idea to some. However, what about actually teaching the word of God from the word of God in our churches. I can't help but wonder what it might be like if we removed the Sunday School books, discipleship training materials and such from the church and just use the word of God to teach the word of God. I say this because I become more and more irritated by the materials that seem to insert one or two scriptures and then a page or two or three of mankind's thoughts and babblings. Well, I've babbled enough myself. I know the question was dealing more with the sovereignty of God in the church then where I drifted off to in my babblings so I'll just leave you with this thought on the church (Nehemiah 8:1-8). I think it's a beautiful picture of what it must be like to truly come together with a hunger and reverence for God's word and worship the Lord as we should and goes a long way in answering the question, "what can we do about it?". As you read Nehemiah 8:1-8 ask yourself these questions. Do we gather as one and encourage our pastors to feed us the word of God like it is written? Are we attentive as the word of God is shared with us? Does the leadership of our local church stand together as one, united and determined to teach and guide us in the word? Do we stand with those that stand on the word of God? Are we awed by the word of God and show reverence to it as they did in Nehemiah 8:5? Do we praise the Lord our Great God like we should? Do we teach the word of God to others and seek to help them understand it? Can you just imagine what it would be like to gather as they did in Nehemiah 8? What an awesome picture! God Bless, Steve Lord helps us. We long for the day you gather your church to be with you. Amen! |

704 | Is a womans body a mans to do as he see | 1 Cor 7:4 | humbledbyhisgrace | 167288
Hello crector, Here are a few scriptures that should help answer your question. Ephesians 5:25-30 (NASB) 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. Do you understand how much Christ loves His Church? |

705 | ... | Is 43:7 | humbledbyhisgrace | 166445
Isaiah 29:16 You turn things around! Shall the potter be considered as equal with the clay, That what is made would say to its maker, "He did not make me"; Or what is formed say to him who formed it, "He has no understanding"? Isaiah 45:9 Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, 'What are you doing? Or the thing you are making say, He has no hands? "Why destroy Sodom when he knew about San Francisco? Why create Adam and Eve in the first place if he knew what would happen? Why create Adam to Noah if he was going to kill them all anyway?" For His Glory! "Why kill everyone but Noah if he knew what the world would end up like?" Again, for His glory! When we see what the world will end up like, we will see His glory. We will see how His ways are much higher then our ways and His thoughts higher then our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9) And ALL will bow before Him and confess Him as Lord! (Philippians 2:9-1). "Why does god seem surprised by the actions/reactions of men?" Where do you find God surprised at anything man has done? God knew you before you were even created in your mothers womb (Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:4-5) He knows everything about you even down to the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30) He created you for His purpose not your own. "Why does god get upset when men turn away from him, he should expect it?" What makes you think He doesn't expect it? After all, it's a part of His plan as is all things before and after this day (Ephesians 1:9-10, Romans 8:28). "Why does god even have human emotions like hatred, anger and jealousy? Aren't those 'bad' traits? If he were the vast intelligence being that created all things why does he have this primitive, negative human qualities?" Possibly you should take the time to read the word of God and seek the answers their. The word of God clearly teaches us we are created in God's image (Genesis 1:26). God has not taken on our traits. Humans are the created being not the creator. We (mankind) have been made in the Creator's image not the other way around. These "traits" you mention are perfect in the creator. Mankind is the corrupted one! May God show mercy and reveal to you His truth! Steve |

706 | If you have never learned of the Trinity | John 3:16 | humbledbyhisgrace | 166379
Hello Ruth, Good point about the knowledge of the Trinity enhancing our walk with God! Amen! This was also my thoughts regarding the many doctrines we find throughout the word of God. As God increases our knowledge of Him we are truly enhanced spiritually! All the more reason to continue to dig into His word and seek to understand Him better. God Bless! 707 | If you have never learned of the Trinity | John 3:16 | humbledbyhisgrace | 166377
There are many different doctrines taught throughout the bible and all I believe are important for us to learn and understand. After all, each one is the word of God. I would encourage you to do a study on Salvation. There are many places on the web that offer free studies on this subject and can point you to many of the scriptures speaking to this subject. It's my belief the scriptures teach us that it's only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ that our sins are forgiven (Ephesians 1:7) and there is nothing we can do to earn that forgiveness of sin on our own, it is a gift from God Himself (Ephesians 2:8-9) and that if we confess Jesus as our Lord and believe in our heart God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved! (Romans 10:9-10). Please do not misunderstand me regarding the doctrine of the Trinity. I am not saying this is not important nor something you should disregard. I'm only attempting to point out the word of God to my understanding does not require the belief or understanding of the trinity to be saved. However, I will also state that I do believe the bible teaches us what we (mankind) refer to as the triune God. One God in three distinct persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). 708 | Does God have a zeal for his own glory? | Eph 1:12 | humbledbyhisgrace | 165886
Hi Doc, Thanks so much for the response! Great link! This is a good read. One worth tucking away for further study. Lot's of good stuff on this web page. I like John Piper's definition you quoted in your post. He covers the bases well don't you think? The main reason I posted the question is the question "why?". I probably should have posed the question a bit different to focus more on the why. But at this point I'm glad I didn't because the work you pointed out at http://www.desiringgod.org/library/tbi/desiring_god.html is worth reading and hopefully others will take the time to read it. It also helps point to the reason why! Why do we see such a zeal from God regarding His glory? First and foremost in my heart I believe God deserves the glory for all things. Not that it matters one way or the other what I believe because the truth is He does. :-) Here's another quote from John Piper that sums up that thought. "Whatever else is, owes its being to him and so can add nothing to him which is not already flowing from him." With that in mind, who else could possibly deserve the glory but God!? My pursuit of this question "why" is to better understand the reason and to be able to articulate it to others. I've read and heard others make this argument but most fail to answer the question why. I can only attribute that to the fact they either assume everyone knows the answer to why, or they are like me and struggle with the words to explain it accurately are maybe they just accept it as is and do not question the why. Either way for me I seek to understand this better in hopes to draw closer to God and better understand His ways. At this point I would fail miserably trying to put into words my thoughts on why so I will not even attempt to at this time. However, I would like to point to another work by John Piper I ran across in my study that address this question and is well worth the read for anyone interested in this subject. http://www.desiringgod.org/library/topics/gods_passion/god_us_himself.html By the way, thanks for your feedback on the question why. You make four very good points to keep in mind when studying this subject. All good points, all worth keeping in mind! Thanks Brother for all your feed back on this. Good stuff! Your Brother in Christ, Steve |

711 | How do you guys fight temptation? | James 5:16 | humbledbyhisgrace | 165734
Here is another good verse to think about and to go along with the other good scriptures and points that have been shared with you. Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Ocelot and Mark both pointed out the importance of the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 is another scripture that points to this importance. Read it, study it, learn it, know it and never stop! Keep in mind, Jesus is our example. His life gives us an awesome example of how to live and handle things we will be faced with. If you will, take a look back at Mark's post and read again the scriptures he listed (Matthew 4:3-10). Notice what Jesus did? He used scripture to fight against the temptations He was faced with. If this is what our Lord would do, then we should follow His example with confidence. Remember, there is power in the word of God (Hebrews 4:12) Your brother in Christ, Steve |

713 | Saved by belief or belief and baptism? | NT general Archive 1 | humbledbyhisgrace | 165624
I agree Coty, God has not lost control of anything. Although I try not to be dogmatic about anything I believe on this point we can say that not only has God not lost control, He never will nor is there any threat to His sovereign control of all He has created. Praise God! I ask you the questions because of your statements. As your brother in Christ I wanted to reassure you that regardless of how things may appear to us at times, God is always in control. Nothing happens that He does not allow to happen. The book of Job is a good example of this very point. Also the book of Jonah, the book of Habakkuk and on and on and on. Yes, His sovereignty runs throughout the scriptures. Amen! We both agree God is in control. I might add we should never cease to fall on our knees and thank Him for that!!! I'm now wondering if we both will agree on my next thoughts. That is, do you think it wise to judge who is and who is not a member of Christ Church? Do we (mankind) have the authority to choose who belongs and who doesn't? Also, isn't it true that there is only one sinless one in the Church? He Christ being the head of His Church. (Colossians 1:18) Who else belongs to His Church that is sinless? (Romans 3:23) Who else but Christ has the authority to say who is and who isn't a part of His Church? Coty, I agree that there are some out there who do not teach the gospel of Christ. But many of the different denominations do. There are differences of opinions on doctrines and even many of the same members of the same denomination differ on their interpretation of scripture. This is a far cry from teaching the doctrines of men as you say. We cross the line I believe when we usurp authority over God's word as if we are the one who determines God's truth. Romans 14 has a lot to say. Would you agree? Your Brother in Christ, Steve |

Hello Brother Coty and God bless! I have a question for you regarding something you said. In your post you say "Thousands of denominations that believe differently and have conflicting views. How can this be." My question(s) is this, Do you think God has lost control of His church? Has mankind's corrupted sinful ways created a problem for God and His sovereign will no longer guiding His church today, has He lost control? Your Brother In Christ!, Steve |

715 | Greater Love | 1 John 4:7 | humbledbyhisgrace | 164591
Be Like Christ! Philippians 2 is one why I could point to scripture to explain my thoughts. Mainly Philippians 2:7-9. From the day I was saved the Lord has laid on my heart the importance of the cross and what He did there. From that day the reading and hearing of His word has taught me just how dependent I am on Him. Understanding these things and looking back at my own self I see just how lost and empty I was before. When I see others now I can honestly say I feel compassion for them more then anything else (Who would you say gave me compassion?) I realize I was just as blind and helpless without Him (referring to the lost). Also, when I see a brother or sister stumble I only have to look back at my self and it doesn’t take long to realize that even standing in His grace we struggle with our corrupted self. It’s a constant reminder we need Him more then I think we realize some times. So for me, it was and continues to be a humbling experience. I could not love another like I do if it was not for God Himself giving me this ability and compassion. I know this because I know who I use to be and I can see the change He has made in my life. How to increase the love? Never forget what our Lord and Saviour did on the cross and continue to look to His example! Pray that He will increase our love for one another! I do confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! God bless! Steve |

716 | more verses | Rom 10:9 | humbledbyhisgrace | 164297
Hi Doc, I hear what your saying and I agree we need to keep digging and learn as much as we can regarding the word of God. Not just for ourselves but for the very reasons you mention. However, not everyone is a theologian but even the least among us can share the gospel. I know, I share it all the time! Thankfully, the more learned among us was graceful enough to help the not so learned to share the gospel message. My guess is that these types of things are popular because most Christians are not bible scholars but many of them do have a passion to share the gospel. Guess how many verses from the bible was shared with me the day I was saved??? One! There is power in the word Brother! I know you know that! ;-) PS. I've never used the "Roman Road" my self but I have used some of the verses. There good ones! God Bless! Steve |

Hello again karuso, Take a look at this link. This is another example of the Roman Road. It includes a few verses I did not mention in the first post. If you do a search on the internet you will find several different approaches to this. So far from what I have seen most are basically the same with only a few differences in the scriptures used.
