7001 | Who hindered you? | Gal 5:7 | Makarios | 5202
Before the Judaizers hindered them. Paul was fond of depicting the Christian life as a race (Gal. 2:2, Phil. 2:16). NASB Study Bible Zondervan.
7002 | Wonder why they wandered? | Deut 2:14 | Makarios | 5201
After leaving Egypt, the Lord had condemned Israel to 40 years of wandering in Sinai as punishment for not entering Canaan as He had commanded them to do at Kadesh (Num. 14:33-34). The 40 years included the time spent at Sinai and on the journey to Kadesh as well as the next 38 years (Deut. 2:14). See also Deut. 1:3. NASB Study Bible Zondervan.
7003 | Why a thorn in the flesh? | 2 Cor 12:7 | Makarios | 5200
The precise nature of this severe affliction remains unknown. 2 Corinthians 12:7 also describes this 'thorn' as a messenger of Satan to torment Paul, to keep him from exalting himself. See also Job 2:10. NASB Study Bible Zondervan.
7004 | Finders losers? Losers finders? | Matt 10:39 | Makarios | 5198
Matthew 16:25, Mark 8:35, Luke 9:24, 17:33, and John 12:25 - A saying of Jesus found in all four Gospels and in two Gospels more than once (Luke 14:26-27), no other saying of Jesus is given such emphasis. Physical life may be saved by denying Jesus, but eternal life will be lost. Conversely, discipleship may result in the loss of physical life, but that loss is insignificant when compared with gaining eternal life. To love one's life here and now- to concentrate on one's own success- is to lose what matters. Supremely, of course, the principle is seen in the cross of Jesus. Love for God must be such that all other loves are, by comparison, hatred. NASB Study Bible Zondervan.
7005 | At whose door is Christ knocking? | Rev 3:20 | Makarios | 5197
Christ is standing at everyone's door! "if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me" - If anyone accepts Jesus Christ into their heart and confess Him as Lord and Savior, they will be saved! (Romans 10:9,13)
7006 | What was Saul's problem? | 1 Samuel | Makarios | 5196
In 1 Samuel 18:6-9, all the women sang 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands' (vv. 6-7), making Saul very angry because he now viewed David as a threat to his kingdom (v. 9) and looked at David with suspicion from that day forward. It is a measure of Saul's insecurity and jealousy that he read their intentions incorrectly and took offense. His resentment may have been initially triggered by the mention of David's name alongside his own. To note how the Philistines interpreted this song, look at 1 Sam. 21:11.
7007 | Serve both God and wealth? | Matt 6:24 | Makarios | 5194
Matthew 6:24 says "either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other". A person cannot be wholeheartedly devoted to two masters, yielding to both at the same time. Matt. 12:25-26 - "a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand", but we are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, and mind. (Matt. 22:37)
7008 | What was David's hidden agenda? | 2 Samuel | Makarios | 5193
In 2 Samuel 11:3-17, David brings Uriah back under the pretense of seeking information about the course of the war (v. 6), and tells him to go home and relax (v. 8). What he does not say specifically is what is most important, and well understood by Uriah (v. 11). David wanted Uriah and Bathsheba to enjoy their evening together (v. 8) to cover David's sin of adultery - this would be the "evidence" that would get David off the hook since Bathsheba was pregnant by David. In v. 13, David made him drunk hoping that in this condition he would relent and go to Bathsheba but Uriah again did not go down to his house. Unsuccessful in making it appear that Uriah was the father of Bathsheba's child, David plotted Uriah's death so he could marry Bathsheba himself as quickly as possible. (v. 15) NASB Study Bible Zondervan.
7009 | How are we like sheep? | Is 53:6 | Makarios | 5191
Hank, this IS my favorite verse! In light of Isaiah 53:6, Henley has 'gone astray' and 'turned to his own way' and needs to come to a realization that his iniquity has been paid for by Jesus Christ. In this verse (my favorite!), just as the priest laid his hands on the scapegoat and symbolically put Israel's sins on it (Lev. 16:21), the Lord ("Him") bore our own iniquities on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds we are healed. (1 Peter 2:24).
7010 | Jesus earth: God/man or just man? | NT general Archive 1 | Makarios | 5158
Yes, Lionstrong, I agree! Each Member of the Trinity is fully God in their Own right. However, I also believe that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (all Members and fully God Themselves) are forever in union with each Other (though not in the same Person!) and wherever One of the Three are, the Others are There also. Therefore, Jesus is the First and the Last with the Father and the Holy Spirit. But Jesus is the only One of the Three of the Holy Trinity that has given us access to a Way that we can be in a right relationship with God. Therefore, the Father sent the Son and the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus, being in every way God. If you reject Jesus, then you reject both the Father and the Holy Spirit also. If you reject the Father and/or the Holy Spirit, then you also reject Jesus. In this way are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit inseparable and omniscient, each being fully and having all the qualities of God, and each (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) are distinct persons in the Trinity. Thank you for your answer! I do not claim to have all the answers or know everything, but I am just sharing what I believe as a fellow brother in Christ.
7011 | Is Jesus the 'Eternal Father'? | Is 9:6 | Makarios | 5154
Does the fact that Jesus is called "Eternal Father" in Isaiah 9:6 mean that Jesus is the Father? No, Jesus is not the Father. As we interpret the meaning of the phrase "Eternal Father" in reference to Christ, it is critical to keep in mind what other Scriptures have to say about the distinction between the Father and the Son. The Father is considered by Jesus as someone other than Himself more than 200 times in the New Testament. Over 50 times (in the NT) the Father and Son are seen to be distinct within the same verse (for example: Rom. 15:6, 2 Cor. 1:4, Gal. 1:2-3, Phil. 2:10-11, 1 John 2:1, 2 John 3). If the Father and the Son are distinct, then in what sense is Jesus the "Eternal Father"? One explanation is that this phrase is better translated 'Father of eternity', and carries the meaning "possessor of eternity." Father of eternity is here used in accordance with a custom usual in Hebrew and in Arabic, where he who possesses a thing is called the father of it. Thus, the father of strength means strong; the father of knowledge, intelligent; the father of glory, glorious. According to this common usage, the meaning of Father of eternity in Isaiah 9:6 is 'eternal'. Christ as the "Father of eternity" is an eternal being. The Targum- a simplified paraphrase of the Old Testament Scriptures utilized by the ancient Jews- rendered Isaiah 9:6: "His name has been called from of old, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, He who lives forever...." Clearly, the ancient Jews considered the phrase Father of eternity as indicating the eternality of the Messiah. Also, this refers to Christ's divine quality as an enduring, compassionate provider and protector (see also Isaiah 40:9-11). Scripture is clear that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct persons. Scripture tells us that the Father sent the Son (John 3:16-17), the Father and Son love each other (John 5:20), and the Father and Son speak to each other (John 8:47, 11:41, 42). Moreover, the Father knows the Son and the Son knows the Father (John 10:15), and Jesus is our advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).Also, it is clear that Jesus is not the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at His baptism (Luke 3:22). The Holy Spirit is said to be another comforter (John 14:16). Jesus sent the Holy Spirit (John 15:26). And the Holy Spirit seeks to glorify Jesus (John 16:13-14). In view of these facts, it is impossible to argue that Jesus is the Father and the Holy Spirit.Does John 10:30 teach that Jesus and the Father are the same person? No. Jesus affirmed, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30). This verse does not mean that Jesus and the Father are one and the same person. We know this to be true because in the phrase, "I and the Father are one," a first person plural- "we are" (esmen in the Greek)- is used. The verse literally reads from the Greek, "I and the Father we are one." If Jesus intended to say that He and the Father were one person, He certainly would not have used the first person plural, which clearly implies two persons. Furthermore, the Greek word for "one" (hen) in this verse refers not to personal unity (that is, the idea that the Father and Son are one person) but to unity of essence or nature (that is, that the Father and Son have the same divine nature). This is evident in the fact that the form of the word in the Greek is neuter, not masculine. Further, the verses that immediately precede and follow John 10:30 distinguish Jesus from the Father (John 10:25,29,36,38). Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father (John 1:18). We also know that 2 Corinthians 3:17 does not prove that Jesus is the Holy Spirit. Just earlier, in vv. 3-6, the apostle Paul clearly distinguishes between Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the whole of Scripture indicates that Jesus is not the Holy Spirit.Sources: NASB Study Bible (Zondervan), Hasting's Dictionary of the Bible (Hendrickson), Matthew Henry's Unabridged Commentary, Strong's Concordance, "The Complete Book of Bible Answers" by Ron Rhodes, "Evidence Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.
7012 | John 3:16 | Heb 4:15 | Makarios | 5152
I agree, dear brother Hank. And I am going to express the problems that I see in the Oneness of Jesus (that is, Jesus is the Father and is the Holy Spirit) that most definitely exist! For Jesus and the Truth of Jesus and understanding what He did for us on the cross is essential to our salvation and our only hope.
7013 | What is a creed? | Acts 2:33 | Makarios | 5151
Dear brother charis, I agree with you that there are problems with believing the Oneness of God in the person of Jesus Christ alone, that is that Jesus is the Father and the Holy Spirit. I just spoke with my supervisor about this very topic this past week and we had good dialogue and we enjoyed debating each other. There are problems with believing in the Oneness of the Deity in Jesus and I am ready now to "break my silence" and to address that discussion on this forum.
7014 | Why not literally? | Josh 10:12 | Makarios | 5150
There is no reason why we cannot interpret Joshua 10:12 literally! In fact, we must interpret this literally. But we will always be in speculation as far as how God actually chose to carry out this miracle. I believe that it did happen and in the way that is described in the Bible even though I have no knowledge of any archaeological findings that would help prove the skeptics wrong. Science is nothing compared to God's Holy Word. If you have God and live in His Spirit and in His Word, then you have gained so much more than you could have by attaining an understanding of science. I don't believe that reckoning the phrase "the sun standing still" is a figure of speech obtained from this verse, either. I believe that these events occurred just because they are mentioned in the Bible. That is enough for me.
7015 | miracles 3 millenia old | Josh 10:12 | Makarios | 5149
No, I believe that this miracle took place even though we have no evidence today. Archaeology or history has been one of the Bible's biggest supporters, but I am unaware of any find that would support the events in Joshua 10:12. However, I believe that the Bible and everything contained in the Bible actually did occur, and this is the only thing I need to believe that the events in Joshua 10:12 did occur. There are many other things in the Bible that cannot be proved by science or any other method and cannot be explained. But I still believe everything in the Bible because of the fact that it is in the Bible. And the Bible continues to guide me in my daily relationship with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who is my only hope.
7016 | Strategic Spiritual Warfare anyone? | Dan 10:13 | Makarios | 5125
Does anyone have any stories or would like to shed some light on Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare? Based on Dan. 10:13, I believe that this concept does have biblical support. Please let me know if you have been engaged in this and have beheld certain experiences.

Here is yet another case of God working in mysterious ways.. :) Thanks Steve for your reply.
7019 | Is being "slain in the spirit" biblical? | Bible general Archive 1 | Makarios | 5122
Steve, in each case that you cited above, it was God that was acting through His Presence and not an act of man (where someone who has 'anointing' lays their hands upon you and you are knocked cold). I agree with you and EdB that God can do whatever He wants, but I feel that calling this "temporary paralyzation" by God being 'slain in the spirit' is a bad way to describe such an experience. It should be more like "overcome by the Presence of God" or something like that. In any case, I feel that it must be God who governs and administers such a Presence or power over people instead of man. I realize that God could 'work through' man if He so desires, but there must be an undeniable Presence of God there that affects the entire congregation as a whole instead of a singled out person. I also believe that there is a difference between being 'slain in the spirit' and being 'pierced to the heart' (Acts 2:37).
7020 | How should be interpret Joshua 10:12-14? | Josh 10:12 | Makarios | 5107
How are we to interpret Joshua 10:12-14 when Joshua asks the Lord to make the sun 'stand still'? Did God prolong the day by some refraction of the sun's rays? I think that God stopped the earth's rotation on its axis. I also think it is interesting that the Amorites worshiped the sun and the moon as deities. Therefore, the TRUE God defeated them through their own 'deities'..
