663 | where in the bible is woman/ makeup foun | 1 Tim 2:9 | Sir Pent | 113789
My answer..................................................... Hi Nissiangle, There are not a lot of places in the Bible that specifically talk about make-up. However, it is generally true that women of ill-repute wore make-up. One example is the evil queen Jezebel in 2 Kings 9:30. Another example is the allegory of the people of Israel who are being wicked in Jeremiah 4:30 and Ezekial 23:40. Here God is making an analogy about His chosen people going after something other than God, just as a prostitute goes after someone other than their husband. So these would be examples in scripture that speak about make-up. However, I think that if you look at the Bible as a whole, God does not say that it is wrong to wear make-up. But rather it is wrong to put anything before God. God also wants us to focus not on the outward things but on the inward attitudes of our heart. Check out 1 Peter 3:3-4. |

664 | A divorced pastor in ministry? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Sir Pent | 22901
Contrary View, experience ....................... Dear Raul, You are correct in a theoretical sense that it is possible for a marriage to fall apart based completely on the faults of only one person in it. However, I have never known anyone to whom that applied, and find it incredibly unlikely that it would be the case for anyone. It has been my experience that when a relationship of any kind (and especially one with the strength of marriage) destructs, that there are at least two people at fault. I would be fairly certain that somewhere along the line, the "Christian" half of the marriage was also at fault. Maybe it would be in how they responded to problems. Maybe it would be in lacking sensitivity to even notice the problems until it was too late. Maybe it would go all the way back to making a poor decision regarding a life partner. Any of these flaws in a person (and many others that could be involved) would also be a serious hinderence to effective leadership in a church. I realize that this is rather harsh, and that I am quite possibly offending those of our forum who have been divorced. Please be patient with me, for I only share what I have observed and believe. I still love you all in Christ, and fully believe in His forgiveness for all of your and my sins. I just feel that we need to have a higher standard of leadership in the church (at least in America). The failings of prominent church "leaders" in our country have done more to damage the Kingdom of God than anything else that I know of. |

665 | A divorced pastor in ministry? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Sir Pent | 22905
Personal Note ................................. Dear Raul, Thanks for sharing the Martin Luther quote. I completely agree with it, and think that it is a great maxim for Biblical understanding in general. I also want to take this chance to welcome you to the forum, and let you know that I have apprecitated your recent participation. |

666 | Are there different heavenly rewards? | 2 Tim 1:9 | Sir Pent | 119293
My answer........................................... Hi Big Al, There does seem to be scriptural support that some people will have more reward in Heaven than others. Check out the passage (1 Cor 3:11-15) where it talks about the work that we build on Christ's foundation surviving as gold, silver, etc. However, the work that is on any other foundation, such as ourselves, will be burned up. There are also the places where Jesus tells us to store up treasure in Heaven (Matt 6:20). I assume that some people follow that command more than others. |

667 | "That's just your interpretation."(?) | 2 Tim 2:15 | Sir Pent | 117064
Don't go too far................................................... Hi everybody, I completely agree with many statements that have been made so far in this thread. 1. You can't interpret a verse to mean anything you want. Words have meaning. 2. God gives the whole Bible to everyone, not just one verse to one person. 3. It is important to put time and effort into studying the Bible. 4. The Bible really says something, regardless of our feelings about what it says. These are all true. However, it is important to not take some of them to the extreme. It is because I begin to see that happening that I am now joining in the discussion. For instance, although God gives the whole Bible to everyone, He also does sometimes direct a specific person's attention to a specific passage. Perhaps through your own reading, or a sermon that you hear, or even this forum, God can point out a certain verse that has particular importance to your life at that moment. In that sense it is OK for someone to say "God gave me this verse today." Another example is this post by JRM. That post proposes that to truly understand scripture, one must first understand the ancient Jewish culture. This is going to the extreme and is incorrect. Please type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen for more information. That thread discussed how the Bible has been inspired by God and maintained even through translations and copies so that anyone can understand and trust it still today. |

668 | can you sleep with a non christian boy? | 2 Tim 2:22 | Sir Pent | 116613
My answer............................................................ Hello Clem, You should not sleep in a bed with a person of the opposite gender unless you are married to them. That would be true whether the other person is a Christian or not. As a Christian, you are a representative of Jesus and an example to the world. What kind of testimony will you be giving if you are known to sleep in bed with this boy? Would Jesus sleep in a bed with a girl? Clearly, He would not. What is your motivation? Why would you want to do this anyway? |

669 | pornography....... | 2 Tim 2:22 | Sir Pent | 116914
Wise quote from another............................................. Hello Angst33, A wise person once said on this forum "Smoking is just another way that we fill a need for ourselves. This is idolatry - we become the source (through whatever means) of fufilling our needs. That is exactly what god wants to do." I would say that the same thing is true of pornography. It is a substitute to fill a need in your life. I would think that the best way to stop using it is to allow God to meet your needs so that there is no reason to look at it anymore. I would also recommend that you join a small group at your church and ask them to help keep you accountable by asking you on a weekly basis how you are doing in that area of your life. P.S. For those of you who wonder who the wise person I quoted was, it was none other than Angst33, themself :) |

Personal Note........................................................ Hi Angst33, I'm glad that I was able to help :) I agree with you that God has a great sense of humor (just look at the duck-billed platypus). I will pray for you as you allow God to work in this area of your life. |

671 | StudyBibleForum or MyOpinionForum? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Sir Pent | 113882
My answer…………………………………………………. Hi Hank, It’s good to see you’re still around. You bring up a very good point in your question. I agree that all of the participants of the forum should try to stay biblically based in general. However, may I bring up a few examples of where this becomes difficult and perhaps unnecessary? Sometimes questions are asked which are not actually dealt with specifically in scripture. For instance, recently there was a question asked about what the “Beatitudes” were. First of all, the word “beatitudes” never appears at all in the Bible. I answered this question by referring to the dictionary. There are some questions that simply can’t be answered by scripture alone. Another recent example was when a prolific poster on this forum recently alluded to a forthcoming change in marital status. There were several responses of a purely personal nature that followed. I think that this is appropriate considering that this forum is not simply a sterile environment where computers spit out answers at people. Instead, it is a community, made up of real people who have real feelings, and sometimes want to share those with one another. Finally, there are some threads that seem to go on quoting scriptures endlessly. Often there are two persons or groups of persons who are on opposing sides of an issue. This recently happened with two forumites debating whether Christians should ever get tattoos. After this continued for a while, I made a post trying to encourage them that there was actually very little difference in their opinions, and that perhaps they should move on to other questions. This post seemed to help to resolve that entire thread although I did not quote any scripture at all. All three of these events have occurred in just the last month, and they are not isolated incidents. I think that they demonstrate that although we should generally stick with scripture, that there can be times when other types of posts are also appropriate and helpful. |

672 | Strict Observance of Bible Versions? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Sir Pent | 113971
My answer............................................... Hi Dat, I once led a discussion on this forum about how much we could trust our current translations of the Bible. If you would like to read that discussion, type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. The basic idea was that we agree with Rowdy that God has protected His Word, and that all of the major translations (NIV, NAS, KJV, etc.) can be trusted. I do not believe that there are any "MAJOR" changes as you said. Perhaps you could ask specifically about some of these changes that you have found, and we could discuss why they are there. |

677 | Lost my salvation? (Hebrews 6:4-6) | Heb 6:4 | Sir Pent | 17823
Dear JohnK, I very much understand some of the thoughts and feelings that you are experiencing. In fact, I have been in a place similar to where you are. I shared my experience previously on this forum, and hope that it might be helpful for you. Just type "lost found testimony" into the search box in the top right to find it. Let me know if you have any further questions. |

678 | Whatever happened to John 17:21? | Heb 6:4 | Sir Pent | 17918
Dear Bill Mc and Reformer Joe, I hesitate to jump in on your discussion here, but felt that it was important. You are both bringing up many good points about the original purpose of this thread regarding salvation. However, I must disagree with this last post regarding "labels" within Christianity. Perhaps I misunderstand you Bill Mc, but it seems to me that you are saying two things. The first is that it is purely divisive to have Christians call themselves by labels such as Calvinist or Armenian. The second is that by doing so they are neglecting the fact that they are either "in Adam or in Christ". First of all, I would like to say that I have purposely stayed out of any discussions thus far on this forum regarding Calvinism/Armenianism, and I don't want to start another one here. However, I do not think that it is the label that causes the division. The division is caused by the fact that there are two (at least) interpretations of the scripture which both appear to be valid and reasonable. The only thing that the label does is save time typing and reading. One could say, "becuase you believe blah, blah, and blah" (with each blah being an entire paragraph itself). However, it is much easier to say, "becuase you agree with the interpretation of so-and-so". This is especially important on this forum. Because of the different perspectives that people have, they have different answers to the questions people ask. They also have different ideas as to what specific verses mean at times. I agree with you that this is at times unfortunate, but not always. Sometimes it is helpful to see things from a different angle. Also, I believe that it is inevitable. True believers have debated some of these theological points for centuries without comming to a consensus. I find it unlikely that all Christians in the world will ever believe the same thing about everything until we get to heaven. This is because right now we only see in part, but then we shall see completely (1 Cor 13:12). I do want to agree with you on one important point and that is that each Christian needs to really search the scriptures to discover what they personally believe. It is not healthy to just accept the interpretations of another person (Calvin or Armenius) or even church without reflection. However, after a Christian discovers what they believe, they will probably be aligned relatively closely with at least one orthodox perspective, and I see no reason that they should not for efficiency sake, be opposed to identifying with others who think the same thing. |

679 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Sir Pent | 24708
A concern for salvation .......................... Dear Tim, I know that you wrote this 3 months ago, but I would like to revisit it. Nolan recently brought up this passage in another post, and I went back and reread it. I know that you said that you find it hard to imagine a person who would do such a thing, but I believe that I may be one. You can read my experience by doing a quick search for "lost found testimony". The question I have is "Do I fit the criteria?" To know that, I need to know what the criteria are. Therefore, I would appreciate your input. In Hebrews 6:4-6: What does it mean to be "enlightened"? What does it mean to "taste the heavenly gift"? What does it mean to "share in the Holy Spirit"? What does it mean to "taste the goodness of God's Word?" What does it mean to "taste the powers of the coming age?" What does it mean to "fall away"? |
||||||
680 | Hebrews 6:4 | Heb 6:4 | Sir Pent | 25272
Further Concerns ................................ Dear Tim, Thanks for your in depth analysis of "being enlightened", "tasting the heavenly gift", and "sharing in the Holy Spirit". I think that I agree with your perspective on those ideas. The bad news is that I know that they applied to me prior to my "falling away". I also agree that "falling away" or "apostasy" is much more than an occasional sin or backsliding. I too, believe that it is a total rejection of God and His salvation. The bad news is that many years ago, I did just that. This would seem to be very bad for me. One thing that I would appreciate more input on would be the type of verb used for the "falling away". Is it a present progressive type, meaning that as long as you reject God, He won't save you? Or is it a past tense type, meaning that if you ever rejected God (after being a Christian), He won't save you? |
