61 | God place people in political positions? | Rom 13:1 | Reformer Joe | 73242
In the United States, both are true. We elect most of our officials, and God sovereignly controls who gets in office as well. Since nothing happens without God either causing it or permitting it (or some combination of the two), all of it falls under God's decree. Even the wicked rulers of the world are established by God for His purposes to be fulfilled. "Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God." --Romans 13:1 --Joe! |

62 | Pastor Preaching in a Mad way!!!!!! | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 72384
Do you attend a church that is governed by several elders or just this one individual? The biblical system of elder rule was established in part to prevent exactly the kind of thing you are describing. --Joe! |

64 | Why does God bet with Satan in Job? | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 71713
God did it to put His glory on display and for Job's sanctification and growth in the knowledge of Him. God's creation and everything that happens in it ultimately results in His glory. In addition, because the story of Job is part of sacred Scripture, all of His people learn more about Him from Job. --Joe! |

65 | LEAVING YOUR CHURCH | 2 Pet 3:18 | Reformer Joe | 71670
Before leaving, I would talk with the pastors and elders of your church to express your frustrations. I was in the same situation you are in, and although the meeting I had with the elders of my church eventually proved unfruitful (at least as far as my wife and I continuing to be members of that congregation), I think it was the right thing to do instead of just silently leaving out the back door. Just my two cents! God bless! --Joe! |

67 | John 1:1.4 | John 1:14 | Reformer Joe | 70518
'1st ques.-"In the beginning the Word already existed."???' Yes He did. The Word, Jesus Christ, was not created. He has always existed. '2nd ques.-"He was with God and he was God." Who is "He"?' Jesus Christ. '3rd ques.-"..the darkness can never extinguish it."???' Jesus called Himself the Light of the World. He came to reveal God's truth regarding forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ and established His church to continue the work, and the darkness of the world that opposes Jesus will never be able to extinguish that Light. --Joe! |

68 | Does old testiment talk of Jesus? | Ps 2:7 | Reformer Joe | 70516
The inter-testamental period lasted about 400 years. In a very real sense, the entire Old Testament talks about Jesus. All of the events in the OT were part of God's redemptive plan to save human beings from their sins in Jesus Christ. Wee see that promise at its vaguest form in Genesis 3:15, but God prgressively reveals more and more about what He has planned to do through Jesus Christ. Genesis 17:7 gives us more detail, and throughout the book we see God promising the coming redemption (on up through Genesis 49:10). If we read Hebrews in the New Testament, we read God's explanation of how the Law of Moses and its system of priests and sacrifices also pointed forward to the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. The prophets also speak of the Messiah. Psalm 2, Psalm 22, Psalm 110, Isaiah 52-53, Micah 5:2, and a holw host of other passages "flesh in" more and more of the plan until God in the flesh Himself came on the scene. Hope this helps! --Joe! |

69 | Virtues and Vices. | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 70441
I am sure that Emmaus will give his own answer when he gets back to the Forum, but Paul gives a good list to the Galatians of vices and their opposites. Perhaps you could dwell on these... "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." --Galatians 5:19-23 The Holy Spirit produces the qualities on the second list in our lives, and the list serves as a "checklist" to if we are living in holiness. --Joe! |

70 | Matthew 15:26-27 | Matt 15:28 | Reformer Joe | 70436
I hold it to be a demonstration of the bigger picture of God extending his mercy to those beyond the ethnic boundaries of Israel. It is a difficult passage, but this exchange shows that the mercy of God is not only for the Jewish believer, but the Gentile believer as well through faith in Jesus Christ. --Joe! |

73 | How do I do this RIGHT? | Bible general Archive 1 | Reformer Joe | 70422
Emmaus gave some sound advice. I would recommend two other things: developing a disiplined study of what God's word actually says, and commitment to a strong evangelical church that will encourage you and challenge you and equip you to be more like Jesus Christ. I would also recommend a very excellent book by Jerry Bridges called _The Pursuit of Holiness_. I found it to be very biblically sound and helpful (I guess those two things go hand-in-hand, huh?) http://store.yahoo.com/discerning/pracofgodpur.html --Joe! |

74 | How to find Hope? | James 1:1 | Reformer Joe | 70377
Here are a few... The end of suffering: "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." --Romans 5:1-5 And the hope we have: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." --1 Peter 1:3-5 Actually, I find all of 1 Peter to be a very good study of the reality of suffering and trials, the hope that lies before us, and the glory God gets when we suffer for His sake. --Joe! |

76 | how can a person do this? | Ps 119:9 | Reformer Joe | 70367
The careful study of the word of God is an indispensible tool for doing what you suggest. Read Psalm 199 carefully and see what effect the study of God's law has on David, the author of the psalm. Then read James 1:22-25 to see how the Christian's walk is taken from just studying the Bible to real-life living. Then read Colossians 1:29 to see where we are to get the strength by which we are to live according to the word of God. Then look at Matthew 6:9-13 to see how we get that strength from God. Hope this helps! I will pray for you right now as well... --Joe! |

78 | Why so many destined for Hell? | 1 Pet 2:8 | Reformer Joe | 70354
"My sister is just marveling over her new baby girl (number four child for her!) and the idea that any of our children would not be saved is just too painful to think about." I would recommend reading Deuteronomy 6 and Acts 2:39. I believe God works covenantally, in that if your sister and her husband are faithful to keep God's commandment -- and some would go so far as to say that such includes baptizing the girl (attention, other readers: please do not turn this thread into something it is not) -- to raise the girl as a Christian, praying for her and teaching her all of God's truth and living it out and encouraging her to embrace Jesus Christ in faith, that in the normal operation of things, God will bring their daughter to Himself. This is more than simply taking her to church with them, of course, but a lifelong commitment to nurture and shepherd a soul that will never, ever cease to exist. --Joe! |
