41 | need info on the book of life | Rev 3:5 | itiswritten | 88676
Dear Uniqueone49, In Revelation 3: 1-6, there is mentioned the Book of Life in Christ's letter to the church at Sardis. It is also mentioned in Philippians 4. It is again mentioned in Revelation 13:8, Rev. 17:8,20:20, 21:27 and 22:19. In all these cases it tells us that those written in the book of life will have eternal life and those who are not will not share in eternal life with God. It tells us that those who do not ovecome will be taken out of the book of life. It also speaks of those who are in the book of life, that their works will be judged. I hope this is helpful to you...not so much what I have to say but that it will give you easy reference to see these scriptures and the verses around them for yourself. Itiswritten |

42 | What are Mortal and Venial sinis | Matthew | itiswritten | 87400
Dear Emmaus, Please do not take offense. As I said I was raised a Catholic. I was saved WHEN I WAS A CATHOLIC, as a Catholic, while reading my Catholic Bible. I am not saying this to "dis" the Catholic Church. I was taught by the Catholic Church that there were venial and mortal sins and that there was a purgatory. I was taught all about miracles and Jesus Christ. However, I was never told that I could have a conversion experience or have any such thing as an encounter with Jesus Christ the Savior of my soul. Not only that, according to Catholic church doctrine, I was practicing birth control and had not gone to church in 7 years which clearly put me in a state of mortal sin according to Catholic church teachings yet, One day, while reading my Catholic Bible, despite all the doctrine I had been taught I met Jesus Christ in my own living room. What I had been told from Catholic grammer school through college...had never told me this was possible. I do not believe that the scripture you refer to gives the same impression that the Catholic church teaching had in this area on myself and many others...the impression that well, if you are not clergy, you will sin...you can not be totally cleansed and you have to figure whatever you haven't been able to overcome in the flesh in this life will be burned off in purgatory for a time.I was taught by implication, to settle for that and that otherwise would be presumptuous to say the least. When Jesus came to me that day I was made instantly aware that I was a sinner (and not because of the reasons of doctrine that the church states), instantly aware that He loved me anyway, instantly aware that I was forgiven and cleansed and made a new person. It was a shock to me. A wonderful awareness but a shock as it showed me that sin was sin, that people had offended me but I was still a sinner because I was offended in the first place and my reaction was just as bad as those who had hurt me even if they were wrong. No mortal and venial...sin was sin, but that Jesus and what He did on the cross was the remedy and that there was no purgatory but you are either forgiven or not...period. Now mind you, I was reading the truths from my own CATHOLIC BIBLE and I do not say anyone should leave the Catholic Church. What I am saying simply is that this doctrine, as far as I know, about mortal and venial sins is taught in the Catholic church as doctrine almost exclusively. I don't think this scripture means that and this is simply my opinion. You are entitled to yours. I just want you to understand why I stated what I did...and the question that was put was simple and I thought looking for just that simple answer...that it was a doctrine of the Catholic church. I believe all doctrine should be from Scripture. I just do not agree that the Scripture you are quoting means the doctrine of mortal and venial sins as I was taught. But that is my own personal opinion. Itiswritten |

43 | What are Mortal and Venial sinis | Matthew | itiswritten | 87369
Dear Emmaus, For what it's worth, the idea of "mortal" and "venial" sins is a doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. It has no biblical basis as far as I know. Having been raised a Roman Catholic (I now attend Assembly of God churches)I was taught that concept at an early age. Mortal sins were acts such as Not attending Mass on any given Sunday, Murder, Adultery, etc., and venial sins might be something like telling a "white lie" so as not to hurt someone's feelings, or making a snide remark about someone. As was said before, in reality, all sin is sin and God makes no distinction. But I thought this might answer your question. Itiswritten. |

Dear Freethinker, I was simply trying to answer your question but I certainly did not accuse you of being ruled by Satan, I did not intend to sound like I was talking down to you, because I was not and I still say you sound very angry. That is something you might want to think about. For myself, I have no argument with you. Sincerely, Itiswritten. |

Dear Freethinker, I have been following this thread and at the risk of repeating an answer you may already have, Noah was told to board two of all the "unclean" animals and 7 pairs or 14 of the "clean" animals. You will find this in Genesis 7:2. Itiswritten |

46 | Studying O.T. is creating problems. | Genesis | itiswritten | 84836
Dear Freethinker, Sorry, I was away for a few days and just received your response in my e-mail. You do challenge me to want to be able to explain the wonderful things that the Lord has shown me through the years that have answered so many of my questions. First of all, there was not enough space before to answer some of the things that are tugging on your heart. For instance the concept that Adam and Eve were cave men so to speak. The Bible does not teach us that you know. Actually, think about it. Don't you think that the two first people made by the direct touch of the hand of Almighty God would be quite unique and perfect specimins? I look at it this way. The further away mankind has digressed from God's way, the more he has (in some instances) sunk to the state of cave man. Look at the civilization of Egypt and look at the Dark Ages in Europe. I believe the concept that we are evolving into something better on our own is really not biblical. It seems to me that we digress the further away we go from God's original plan for mankind. We are digressing not progressing. If a great civilization takes a catastrophic blow, those who escape, usually are unable to continue. For instance, imagine for a moment that a meteor hit the United States...that it was enough to only destroy our's and western society as we know it and a small population escaped. With technology destroyed, we may remember it and maybe some of the more educated would know how to use things but they would live among the ruins unable to duplicate it. The next generation would grow up having lost the technology. Do you see what I mean? I couldn't actually build a car, but I can drive one. I couldn't outfit a whole hospital, stock it and staff it, but I have used them. I couldn't set up a TV or radio station, but I am familiar and actually depend on them. Yet, even in our modern age there are some civilizations that have become as backward as cave men. We are capable of becoming that low but I don't think man, without the help of God, can ever stop destroying, making war and causing trouble in this world. If you set up a kind dictator to establish order for a nation in trouble, for that initial generation, things may go well. However, eventually someone will come into power that will misuse the privilege and be indifferent to the common man or downright cruel for his own benefit. History shows us that we can count on that. The Bible does not condone or encourage situations such as slavery. However, the Bible tells it like it is and they were a fact of life at the time of the Biblical writings. In fact, slavery still does exist is some areas of the world today. Concerning the Smart girl I would say, it was not a lack of grace or faith that she was taken in the first place. It was because of the sin of the man who kidnapped her. God has not taken away his free will to do right or to do wrong. Have you never seen instances in the Bible where good God-fearing persons have been wronged by those who practice evil. However, the Bible teaches us that even so, Romans 8:28 applies here which says: "And we kbow that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to His purpose." So, I believe that God will use this experience that the young Smart girl has come through for the greater good of her and probably all those around her. One last thing. Becoming an atheist because of the shortcoming of any amount of persons should not be the case. This is about you and your God. It should be between you and your God. In this world you will find no perfect human...not even among church leaders. I pray that through this forum or any other way that the Lord sees fit, that you come across someone who lets the Lord truly shine through them that you may really see God working in love, despite the faults they will have. Only God is perfect, and what you may be searching for can be found only in Him. I wish you well, and will keep you ever in my prayers. Itiswritten. |

47 | Studying O.T. is creating problems. | Genesis | itiswritten | 84710
Dear Free Thinker, You sound so angry. This is not a debate and it is not exactly what you imagine. God loves you and Jesus His Son died for you.I cannot defend God, He is able to defend Himself. I will try to explain better and you do with it what you will. In order for mankind to have a free will...he had to be able to freely choose. Otherwise mankind would be robot-like and God apparently wanted more for us. It is not a matter of good deeds/bad deeds. And in fact our good deeds, even if they outweigh our bad deeds, do not fix our problem. The inherited twisted, sin-loving nature is the problem that we inherited. It is not like well, our Daddy murdered someone and we are taking the blame for his actions. It is a matter of an apple tree only naturally bears apples (unless we unnaturally graft in the bough of a pear tree). So, humans can only be made up of a nature that delights in sin because that is the ingredients we are made of. We still have a free will, but we do not have a remedy for our ingredients. You know, originally Eve fell for the libelous lie of the Devil who accused God of withholding something good from her and if she ate of that which God was withholding, she would be a threat to God and be as knowledgable as He was. (Gen. 3:4-5). Be careful you are not falling for the same kind of lie. God, the Father could have destroyed the initial couple and started all over again but He chose to redeem us all. He redeemed us at a great deal of cost to Himself...His only begotten Son. I don't know if you are a person who is married and has children but if you are or if you have any understanding of the nature of little children, you would know that they are consciously quite innocent even though they may do some really outrageous things. That is what often endears us to them. They love to say "no" to everything we tell them, they lie about the candy with chocolate all over their faces, they take everything in sight and think they are entitled to it all. Yet, all these little antics are wrong...we are twisted, perverted, from the beginning. It is our sin nature appearing as soon as we are able to do independent acts. As soon as we know what sin or evil is, that does not stop us. We actually get worse. This is not because of something an ancestor did. It is our own doing. We can choose not to do these acts, but by the time we can make that choice we find we have already done wrong and even though we make that choice, we can not hold to it perfectly. So, in the end, we are responsible...no longer Adam and Eve. Rom. 3:10-18). And Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father but through Me." (John 14:6)Like it or not, understand it or not, Jesus is it...the one and only remedy. We can choose to take it or leave it because our free will still remains intact. There are answers to all of your questions in the Bible if you would only read it with an open mind and ask the Holy Spirit to open your understanding. In His Word God tells us that we will find Him if we seek Him with our whole heart. If you really want the truth, God will not withhold it from you, but if you like a good argument you will forever be arguing never coming to a place of settled satisfaction. Concerning the episode with Noah getting drunk after the flood. This is just my thoughts and observations because the Bible in NO WAY SAYS what I am about to give you as food for thought but these are my thoughts because I know the Lord and I have pondered this particular question with my personal understanding of my Savior and so these are some of the conclusions that I have come to on this topic in my own mind. I believe that the earth had a different atmosphere before the flood. We can tell from what the Bible tells us that mankind originally was vegetarian and the Bible tells us that mankind also lived a longer life. I believe that the earth had a different atmosphere and that the produce of the ground had more nutrients prior to the flood. And so, after the flood there may have been changes in the atmosphere and changes in the nutrients of the vegetation and so mankind's life was shorter and now it was necessary to eat meat also to obtain enough protien to sustain healthy life. There is no sense that God was upset with Noah for getting drunk, neither is there any sense that Noah did this on purpose. It is quite possible that fermentation was not possible prior to the flood. It may never have rained previoiusly but was watered by a mist (Gen.2:6). We do not come to God by our understanding; we come to Him by faith and He will then give us understanding. He does not condemn us, we will condemn ourselves. Seek Him with your whole heart and you WILL FIND HIM. Sincerely, Itiswritten |

48 | Doubt their salvation? | 1 Cor 5:11 | itiswritten | 84671
Dear Cwade, Concerning the salvation of your friends, I do not know. I can only go by what the Word of God tells me and the judgment is up to Him. However, if they insist on living they way you say they do, it would be better for you not to "hang out with them," by what the Word of God cautions us. The thing is this: a Christian will sin from time to time, but one cannot call oneself a Christian and commit to a lifestyle that is of sin. Under temptation, a Christian may commit adultery, feel terrible about it, repent, ask the Lord for forgiveness and get up and go forward. But to live in sin, or to live in a lifestyle of sin...that is another issue. The great Billy Graham put it this way in a book of his that I read a long time ago. He told a story about what it means to be born again. He said there were two row boats. They were in the same river as everyone in this world is in the same river. The people of this world were in the row boat that went along easily with the current (or went along with what is politically correct, so to speak) and the other was the row boat of the born again believers of God. They were going in the same river but in the opposite direction of the current, struggling against the tide. Jesus gave us the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matthew 13:24-30. This shows us that it is very difficult to tell the difference between a maybe immature Christian, for example, and a fake one. Jesus also tells us in Matthew 7:13-20. What is the fruit of their doings? If it is sinful, it is not of God. If it produces strife, disobedience to the commandments of God, etc...what is their fruit? Whether they profess to be Christians or not, we know them by their fruit. Whether they are "saved" or not, their lifestyles tell us that they are in danger of hell-fire. So, they need prayer. By the sincere prayers of one who really cares, one who does belong to the Lord, they may yet be saved or reinstated into proper standing the household of God, whatever is appropriate which God only knows. If they are saved, according to what Paul tells us, and they persist in sin, they will reap terrible things in this world in order to retain their salvation (I Cor. 5:1-6). We can not feel safe in our assumptions that a person is a Christian because they belong to a Church because today as it was even in the early days of the faith, many mainline churches have accepted what the Word of God says is not in any way acceptable. (see Matthew 7:21, Romans 1:21-32). The word of God also warns us about those who accepted the Lord and turned back to their old ways. You can read about this in 2 Peter 2 and Matthew 13: 18-23. Which category your friends are under is not for me to say, neither do I wish to. But If you look at the example of the early church fathers...it would not be tolerated in the fellowship of the faith. I do not condemn - I caution and I encourage you to continue to pray for them. Depending on what the situation in fact is, you may be the one and only person who cares enough to really make the difference for them. I hope this answers your question. Sincerely, Itiswritten. |

49 | Studying O.T. is creating problems. | Genesis | itiswritten | 84665
Dear skip, Your problem is that you do not understand the Old Testament Scriptures and/or have a full understanding of your salvation. When you look at Genesis 1 and 2 you see creation as God had intended. His crowning glory was man. Man was at peace with all of creation and God also gave him a woman...a wife, so to speak, a helpmate. Every man, woman and child that has ever been born into this earth was in the genes of these two persons and they fell from grace. God had warned and tested the free will He gave them by saying they were free to eat the fruit of every tree of the garden EXCEPT for ONE. They disobeyed. Since we were all in their genes, we all fell and are part of that sinful nature. It is born in us all. This is evidenced in the very next story of Cain and Abel, it is evidenced in the story of Lamuel, it is evidenced in the tower of babel and it is evidenced in the story of Noah and the ark. But right from the beginning, God began to teach man about what it takes to cover sin and about what constitutes life. "The life is in the blood" (Gen.9:4, Lev. 17:11) As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, they covered themselves out of guilt and shame - but that was not acceptable to God. No, He covered them with animal skins. This means that the animal had to die to cover them. It required its blood as a substitute for their blood. The blood is all important. That is why Jesus had to die and shed his blood. Even though they were under a curse (Genesis 3) God immediately gives them hope in Genesis 3:15 with the promise of the seed of the woman who would be the perfect substitute. They did not understand then, but it was about the God-man, the Messiah, the Christ, God with us, Immanuel...the one and only perfect sacrifice who would shed his blood once for all time and be that substitute. Meanwhile, God did not institute slavery, polygamy or war...man in his fallen nature did that all by himself. And why did God destroy so many nations? In I Cor. 5:5-6 we see that a little leaven destroys the whole lump. Sin is that way. When God sent the Israelites into the Promised land, He did so only at a time when the Canaanites were fully ripe in idolatry and violence. He did not want them to be contaminated with it. They, because of their own disobedience, ever really destroyed them all and they DID become contaminated with the idolatry of those nations. If you go back to the beginning that is what God was doing with the Flood, and with the tower of babel. He separated us by languages and different cultures, mountains and rivers when he caused man in is many languages to flee from one another, because outside of obedience to Him, it would only make our rebellion and our cruelty all the more powerful if we could do this in unity. (read Genesis 11). Yes, His holy temple became a slaughterhouse. The reason for this is so we would recognize the stench of OUR SIN. If we did not sin, this would not have been required. Oh there is so much more. Suffice to say, the blood is the most important thing about our whole faith...the Blood of Jesus Christ and the entire Bible, Old Testament and New is all about the Blood that bought our eternal life. I hope this is helpful. Itiswritten. |

50 | Don't associate with Christians who sin? | 1 Cor 5:11 | itiswritten | 84660
Dear Cwade, In John 6:44 the Word of God tells us that "No man can come to me (Jesus), unless the Father draw him/her: and I will raise him/her up on the last day." So, in answer to your question, if I were you I would dissasociate myself unless and until the Lord clearly direct you otherwise and meanwhile pray with all my heart that the "Father draw them." People do not get saved unless and until they feel the need for it. They need to come to a place in their life where they experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit that they are sinners and need saving. No amount of lecturing by well meaning friends or relatives will get them there. Never underestimate the power of sincere prayers. And, when we pray, we must pray according to His will. It is always in His will for a person to be saved. Do this with your whole heart and you will be amazed to see what the Lord may do. I hope this is helpful. Itiswritten |

51 | PLEASE EXPLAIN MATTHEW 19:8 | Bible general Archive 1 | itiswritten | 83399
DearAmenbob, I know nothing about you or your wife. I do not believe any one else should tell you what to do about your situation unless asked and unless qualified. A good counselor is qualified, a minister and/or someone who knows you and the word of God could give good counsel, and the Word of God gives excellent counsel. Concerning your specific question, Jesus is saying that Moses allowed a method for divorce because the men would do it anyway and would not listen because their hearts were hard. He is also saying it was not so in the beginning as God made one man and one woman, not one man and several women. God is never for the destruction of a covenant between two people as in marriage. It is even worse if children are involved. It is not for anyone else to judge, however. You can pray to the Lord to give you a soft heart. The Lord actually CAN give you love for your wife again if the situation is reversible. You really must resolve this with the Lord and not take steps just because someone else tells you something. Read all the scriptures you can find on the subject, and if you are affiliated with a good church ministry, you should seek counseling. Get a good concordance that goes with your Bible and look up everything you can find on marriage, divorce, husband, wife and see what the Lord leads you to do. You may even find bible concordances on line. I sincerely hope this is helpful to you. Itiswritten |

52 | Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 not Satan! | Bible general Archive 1 | itiswritten | 83398
Dear Student7300, The scriptures can stand for more than one thing at the same time. This is not unusual. For instance, Daniel 9:23-27 speaks of the time between the Testaments when Antiochus Epiphanes defiled the temple but along with Matthew 24:15, it also speaks of the second coming of Christ, after the appearance of the antichrist on the scene. In Isaiah 14, it clearly states the name Lucifer, which is a name of Satan. Satan itself means "the adversary." That is merely one of his titles. Lucifer was his original name as a covering angel of God's glory. Lucifer means LIGHT. Lucifer continues to go before God and accuse us. When Jesus sent out 70 believers and told them to heal and perform miracles in his name, he also said that he saw Satan fall from the heavens much the same as it is stated in Isaiah 14. I believe it does stand for the earthly ruler, but I believe it also stands for the devil. I know this can be disconserting, but continued fellowship with the Lord and study of the word of God will make it easier to discern what the Lord is telling you. II Timothy 2:15 says "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Do not be upset; pray to the Lord and praise him and continue to study the scriptures and it will get clearer and clearer as you go on. It is very commendable that you want to be accurate and not just accept anything simply because someone else says its so, if you do not see it. Jesus approves of your attitude. Remember also that the Holy Spirit will remind you of whatever God has taught you through His Word. (John 14:26). So, keep studying, keep reading the word, and the Lord through His Holy Spirit will help you make more and more sense of it as time goes on. I hope this is helpful to you. Itiswritten |

53 | DEATH OF JOSEPH AND MARY WAS MARY ANGRY | Bible general Archive 1 | itiswritten | 83396
Dear Keemnanni, The Bible does not say anything about the death of Joseph or Mary. We assume that Joseph died before Jesus began His earthly ministry, because he is never mentioned except concerning the fact that people considered him Jesus' father and that he had other children as well. Mary lived until after Jesus' resurrection because the Bible gives account of her being present at Pentecost (Acts 1:13 through all of Acts 2). As far as the incident in which Jesus, as a youngster, told his parents that he must be about his Father's business, the Bible tells us that they did not understand what he meant by this statement and also that Mary kept these sayings in her heart (Luke 2:51). Hope this is helpful. Itiswritten |

54 | Where is eden located? | Bible general Archive 1 | itiswritten | 83394
Dear Allen0229, According to my "Halleys Bible Handbook," twenty-fourth edition, p.64: "It was on the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, at their junction with the Pishon and Gihon (Gen. 2:10-14). The Pishon and Gihon have not been identified. The Euphrates and Tigris rise in the Caucasus mountain region of southwest Asia, flow southeastward, and empty into the Persian Gulf. Thus man may be said to have been created at about the center of the earth's surface; for this Caucasus-Euphrates region is the approximate center of the Eastern Hemisphere, which is the largest of the two Hemispheres. Ethnologists quite generally consider this region to have been the original home of all the present races of men. It was the region from whence came the ox, goat, sheep, horse, pig, dog, apple, peach, pear, plum, cherry, quince, mulberry, gooseberry, vine, olive, fig, date, almond, wheat, barley, oats, pea, bean, flax, spinich, radish, onion, and most of our fruits and vegetables. The cradle of the human race." Only very recently have some been deciding that man originated in deep Africa. I have seen this on Discovery Channel and other modern scientific television programs. I believe it is an attempt by the enemies of the Gospel to rewrite history in our days. I hope this is of some help to you. Itiswritten |

59 | What about the chariot of fire? | 2 Kin 2:11 | itiswritten | 82989
Dear gate1, This is an interesting observation. It is incredible what most people believe when something is spoken of a certain way for so many years. As you say, it looks like Elijah went up in a whirlwind, only having been separated from Elisha by one of the Lord's horses and chariot. I do not think it matters particularly HOW he was taken out of this world except that he, just like Enoch before him (Genesis 5:22), left this world without dying and was taken directly out of this natural place. The main thing is that it did happen. However, there may be some small or individual reason for the minor details and I appreciate your observation and will keep this in my memory for future reference and to see what the Lord may speak to me now that you have pointed this out to me. If you look in and around the scripture, II Kings 6:17, you will see another instance where we see the fiery chariots and horses of Israel...seeming to be the angelic armies of Israel. In this instance they are observed by Elisha, again. This time there are many of them. In Ephesians 6:12 we are told that we do not fight against flesh and blood, "but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Now in this case we are speaking of the spiritual armies of the Adversary, but in the scriptures above, in II Kings, we are speaking of the armies of the Lord. In Matthew 8:5-8:13 we see the Gospel account of a Centurian who came to Jesus to ask Him to heal his servant. Jesus marveled at his faith and his keen observation that Jesus had spiritual authority over the heavenly hosts much in the same way as he, as a centurian, had authority in the worldly sense. Thank you for your observation and I hope my comments are helpful to you also. Itiswritten |

60 | How do I relate this scripture to women | Titus 2:3 | itiswritten | 82435
Dear Jabezperkins, Once children have grown and left the nest many women find that they have a lot more time on their hands. It takes a lot of time and attention to raise a family. The extra time can be a temptation to partying or getting too involved in other person's business which can lead to gossip. It would be better to turn one's excess energies toward the Lord's work in some way and to help other younger women in their walk with the Lord by the things they have learned through their own experience in raising their children. That's just some of my thoughts. I hope this would inspire some direction for your talk, though it be little. Itiswritten |
