43 | Has Anyone Changed His Mind? | Eph 2:8 | MrsBinGA | 51610
Absolutely not! The more I read the New Testament, especially the Epistles, the more I realize salvation is TOTALLY of the Lord. So many verses, i.e. "He Who began a good work in you WILL complete it . . ."; "He is the Author and Finisher of our faith . . "; "He works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure . . "; "Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy". These are just a few verses. Being the mother of three I tend to view my salvation as when my children were born and how I took care of them. No matter what they did or ever will do, they are STILL my children (eternal security). Even if they left and never saw or spoke to me again, that would not change the fact that they were born of me, part of my body. When the children were growing up whenever they'd disobey me, I'd discipline them. But they were still my children and I loved them dearly. (Ofcourse sometimes I'd like to have said to them what Bill Cosby said to his kids "I brought you into this world and I can take you out!" smile) And when my children didn't WANT to obey me, well, I certainly had ways to persuade them and they'd eventually come around. (smile) If I, as a finite human can take care of my children, my Heavenly Father sure can keep me. I feel totally sad for Christians who believe they can lose their salvation, or become "un-born again." How can a person become "un-born"? No one's ever been able to tell me. And people who DO believe this way must never be able to rest in their salvation. Oh, well, I know in Whom I have believed and am persuaded that HE is able to keep that which I have committed unto HIM against that day! |

49 | Asking for gifts of the Spirit? | 1 Corinthians | MrsBinGA | 49465
Hello Justme! Forgive me for jumping in for iydubb. It’s true there are no verses which tell us to “ask” for the “spiritual” (the word “gifts” in I Cor. 14:1 is not in the original Greek text). But you may be interested to learn we are requested/commanded to desire and covet them. 1 Cor.14:1 says: "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." (KJV) The Greek verb here for "desire" is "zeloo". According to Vine's Expository Dictionary it means "to have a zeal for, to be zealous towards, whether in a good or evil sense." The same Greek word is translated 1) "covet earnestly" in I Cor. 12:31: "But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way;" 2) "covet" in 1 Cor 14:39: "Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues."(KJV) In all these verses the verb under discussion is in the “imperative mood”, that is, the mood of command or entreaty. It expresses the appeal of one person’s will (in these instances, God’s) to another person’s will (man’s). This same imperative mood is found in the verbs of Mt. 5:44 “love your enemies”; Mt. 6:6 the phrases “enter into your closet” and “pray to your Father”; Mt. 11:28 “Come unto Me”; Jn 6:20 “be not afraid”; I Thess. 5:16: “Rejoice evermore”. God has requested/commanded us to love our enemies, enter into our closets and pray, come to Jesus, rejoice always, not be afraid, ANDarnestly desire/covet the spiritual, the best gifts, and to prophesy. But whether or not we CHOOSE to do any of these is totally up to us. Also, in one of your other posts of May 25, you stated that the gifts of tongues was the least of the gifts. How do you justify that statement? Even if it is the least of the gifts, how ungrateful a child I would be to refuse it on that basis. I truly don't understand why God's kids don't want all - great or least - He has for them. |

50 | when do I spake in tounges | Acts | MrsBinGA | 49066
I've never understood why all born-again believers whole-heartedly acknowledge the Fruit of the Spirit, which is His nature, is still available today, but His gifts (power) are not. How can we only accept part of Him? And how do we know there are no living apostles? God tells us in Eph. 4:11-13 that He gave them to us, along with 4 other ministries, and He tells us why He gave them: "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:" Is the Body of Christ mature or unified in the faith? I don't think so. And if we say there are no living apostles, then what about prophets, evangelists, teachers, or pastors? Where do we draw the line? |

51 | What does Hebrews 8 Mean? | Lev 17:11 | MrsBinGA | 48784
In order to understand Heb. 8, you must read chapters 1-7 because Heb. 8:1 begins with "The point of what we are saying is this: . . ." How can we understand the "point" of chapter 8 without reading what lead up to it? The first 4 chapters discuss the superiority of Christ's person over the prophets; over the angels in His deity and humanity; over Moses in His work and person. Chapters 4-10 discuss the superiority of His work: His priesthood, His covenant, His sanctuary and sacrifice. Chapter 8 deals primarily with Christ's covenant being superior to the Mosaic covenant, i.e. the Law. Verses 6-9 state: "But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs (the priests of vv 4-5) as the covenant of which He is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: ‘The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord'." Verses 10-12 tell us what that new covenant is: "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Then verse 13 reveals God's view of the old covenant: "By calling this covenant ‘new,' He has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear." What was the purpose of the Law? Gal. 3:19, 24-25 tells us: "Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator"; "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster." Before you allow people to put you under the obligation of keeping the Law, I suggest you consider these few verses: "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them" (Gal 3:10); "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all;" (James 2:10); "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified" (Gal. 2:16). Lastly, Romans 10:3-4: "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." Be sure to read Acts 15. Certain men of Judaea and a group of Pharisees said the Gentile Christians of Antioch had to be circumcised AND keep the law of Moses in order to be saved. (Notice Peter's words in v. 10 concerning the Law.) But they were wrong in their requirements, as you'll see when you read the entire chapter. God bless you as you continue your life in the Lord Jesus Christ. BTW, have you ever taken a Concordance and looked up all the references pertaining to your new life, i.e. being "in Christ" and what that entails? It's awesome! |

52 | IN THE BIBLE WHAT DOES REVEREND MEAN | Bible general Archive 1 | MrsBinGA | 48731
It doesn't. The only place the word "reverend" is used is Psa. 111:9: "He sent redemption unto His people: He hath commanded His covenant for ever: holy and reverend is His name." (KJV) The Hebrew word here is yare' (yaw-ray') and means "to fear; morally, to revere; caus. to frighten." If you call your pastor "Reverend" it would be a title of respect, meaning you "revere" him or his position. I, personally, address my pastor as Pastor, which means "a shepherd" (see Eph. 4:11). This title truly characterizes him. |

53 | what and who was amalek when moses live | Gen 36:12 | MrsBinGA | 48720
A decendant of Esau. According to Deut 25:18 they had attacked Israel from the rear, making a cowardly assault upon the "faint and weary" stragglers. This explains the severe judgment of Ex 17:14-17. (from The Wycliffe Bible Commentary You may want to read I Sam. 15. God told King Saul to destroy everything of the Amalekites because of what they did to Israel. See the consequences to King Saul due to his "partial" obedience and God's thoughts on the subject. Notice also Saul's refusal to accept responsibilty for his disobedience. Does his "blame game" sound familiar? Have a blessed day in our Lord Jesus Christ! |

55 | Meaning of the name "Gethsemane". | Bible general Archive 1 | MrsBinGA | 48553
Gethsemane is of Aramaic origin and means "oil-press". In Matt. 26:36 it was called a "place" or farm (Greek word "choorion") to which probably the "garden" was attached. It was the favorite resort of our Lord with His disciples (John 18:2), the shade of its trees affording shelter from the heat and the privacy so congenial to Him. Gethsemane was situated on the Mount of Olives just east of Jerusalem, across the Kidron Valley and opposite the Temple (Mark 13:3; John 18:1). From its name scholars conclude that the garden was situated in an olive grove that contained an olive press. Attempts to locate the exact site of the garden have been unsuccessful. Many Christians have agreed on one site-the place which Constantine's mother Helena designated about A.D. 325. But at least two other sites are also defended by tradition and have their supporters. The gospel accounts do not provide enough details to show the exact site of the garden. (Taken from Fausset's Bible Dictionary and Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary) Hope this helps. |

56 | Come as you are | 1 Timothy | MrsBinGA | 48549
Ask your youth to give YOU the Biblical reference for this so-called "verse." According to my excellent PC Study Bible computer program there is no such verse. Jesus says in Matt.11:28 "Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." But the context has nothing to do with apparel. God told Moses in Ex. 20:26 "Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon." It appears He was concerned about even ankles being exposed. The Bible has much to say about how God's children are to dress, especially the women (Tim. 2:9). This may be a good Bible study subject for your youth group. |

57 | when do I spake in tounges | Acts | MrsBinGA | 48466
My dear brethren, This subject has been debated by the best of scholars for years and volumes have been written on the subject. So to try and answer your question here would be fruitless. I would suggest, however, you read for yourself the entire book of Acts and I Corinthians chapters 12-14, asking the Lord to reveal His truth to you. When you ask people for their opinion of a Scripture or Biblical subject, their answer is usually slanted by their personal convictions. These dear people may have the best of intentions to answer you honestly, but they're still human. The Holy Spirit is your Teacher and He will lead you into all truth. God says in I Tim. 2:15 "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." The Greek word here for "rightly dividing" is "orthotomeo" and it means "to make a straight cut, i.e. (figuratively) to dissect (expound) correctly." The Holy Spirit will teach you IF you are totally open to His truth (not man's preconceived ideas of it) and IF you "dissect" His word, NOT just read it. Have a blessed day in our Lord Jesus Christ! |

60 | Who looked for a wife for 14 years? | Gen 31:41 | MrsBinGA | 40630
Jacob - but he wasn't "looking" for a wife 14 years. Jacob loved Rachel and thought he was marrying her during the ceremony. He discovered the following morning, however, that he married her older sister Leah. Although Jacob "worked" 14 years for Rachel, he was allowed to marry her after he had "fulfilled" Leah's week. You may want to read Genesis 29 for the complete story.
