41 | Good Pro Textus Receptus Book? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 125250
I've read some good stuff by Metzger that supports the use of the oldest manuscripts, and that supports newer English translations over those based on the Textus Receptus. Are there any really good PRO-TR books out there? Most of the stuff I've seen tends to use circular reasoning. I'd like to read a good pro-TR book to be really familiar with arguments from both sides of the aisle. Thanks! Huron |

EdB, You mentioned that soem claims by Wescott and Hort were proven false. Do you remember which ones? I'm with you, seems most pro-TR writing includes circular reasoning, character assinations, or emotional, bombastic claims. Be nice to see something well done. Huron |

EdB, Thanks, I had seen the second link before. Brought my hopes up that there might be some scholarly KJO/TR books, but apparently not. Huron |

44 | Good guides to Old Testament Manuscript | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 125452
I've enjoyed reading the works by Metzger including "Metzger's Textual Commentary on the Greek NT", and his book the, "New Testaments Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration". Does anyone know of any similar books for the Old Testament? Thanks! Huron |

Yes, judging by the lack of books regarding OT manuscripts versus the abundance of them for the NT, I'd say you are right. Just found out that the "extra space" space left in the Alexandrian manuscripts for the longer Mark ending theory is bunk. Suspected such. Huron |

Don't see the link. I'm currently reading an excellant book, "Why I'm not a Calvinist". Good fair treatment of both sides of the issues of determination, irresistable grace........ |

This one is by Jerry L. Walls and Joseph R. Dongell. The ISBN number is 0-8308-3249-1. It sells for about 12 dollars at the local bookstore. Very rational/non emotional look at the issues. |

50 | sound byte or context? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 125585
When using scripture to discuss Christian topics and support your viewpoint, how do you know how much context to use? To provide an overly simple example, 1 John 4:8 "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" Some people might argue from that verse that God wouldn't send anyone to hell, but in the context of the whole New Testament, or 1 John for that matter it obviously isn't true. So to be fair you can't use "sound bytes". To give a real world example, Romans 9:11 "For though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls," Now, if we look just at this one verse it seems to be the perfect verse in support of predestination. On the other hand, when you look at it in the context of Romans chapters 9,10,11 you see that Paul is explaining that just because the Jews have the birthright as God's chosen people that does not guarantee salvation for them. God can choose to use the Gentiles, and branch Israel could repent and be grafted back in to the tree. So, what real world rule of thumb do YOU use? Huron |

51 | Key verse of the Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 125644
What would you say is THE key verse in the Bible? If you could just share one verse with the everyone that you met, what would it be? I'm guessing that for most people it would be John 3:16, but I would like to get some opinions. Regards, Huron |

52 | Bible versions which one is best | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 150213
The KJV is an excellant Bible. My favorite though, is the NASB which is use for my daily reading and for study. I also do all of my memory work in the NASB. The only downside with the NASB is that it is a mouthful to read aloud. I also have copies of the KJV, RSV, NIV, and NKJV at home to compare with.

55 | Freewill before the fall? | Gen 2:9 | Huron | 125838
Before Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil did they have "freewill"? My guess is they did, but I'm interested in hearing what others think about this verse. Thanks! Huron |

56 | Septuagint quoted here in Matt 1:23? | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142599
Is this a quote of the Septuagint? Anyone look into the "virgin" -vs- young lady issue regarding the translation of Isaiah 7:14? Thanks! Huron |

57 | How do we know Isaiah 7:14 was prophecy? | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142664
Tim, Thanks for the succinct answer! While I see that knowing about the Septuagint clears up some issues, I have another question: How do we KNOW that the Isaiah prophecy was about the Messiah? When reading the verse from Isaiah in context, it seems to me that Isaiah is only addressing the king Ahaz and his immediate situation. Obviously, Matthew saw it as a prophecy and he was a Hebrew on the scene, so he has to be correct, but I have to admit that I'm a little puzzled. Regards, Huron |

58 | Isaiah 7:14/Matt 1:23 | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142761
Tim, That certainly answers the question for me, but what would you tell someone who asked the same question BUT only believes the OT. Person in question believes the Messiah hasn't come yet, and that the NT was written by heretics. With that background information, how would you answer the question? |

59 | Justification in Matt 12:37 by our words | Matt 12:37 | Huron | 145970
In what sense are we justified by our words? Is this the same as the word justification used by the Apostle Paul elsewhere in the NT? How does this mesh with Ephesians 2:8-9, and Titus 3:5, that state that we are saved by grace/faith????
60 | Entering versus inheriting kingdom? | Matt 18:3 | Huron | 214271
Is there a difference between "entering the kingdom of heaven (Mk 10:15," "inheriting the kingdom of God (Jn 3:5)," "seeing the kingdom of God," and "kingdom of God belonging to you (Luke 18:16)?" In other words, do all these terms mean the same thing?
