2 | Receiving Christ - Works? | Not Specified | Huron | 92939
I need a little help with a question: My brother (great guy) tells me that "decision theology" is wrong. I disagree because I believe that everyone must make a decision about Christ. He states that a decision would be "works", and that we are spiritually dead before the renewing/rebirth therefore we can't do anything ourselves to effect salvation. I realize that we are saved by grace through faith per Ephesians 2.8,9 and Titus 3.5, but there are MANY verses in the Bible like John 1.12, 3.16, and Revelation 3.20 that talk of "receiving Christ." I tried to tell him that he is right, it's not by works BUT making a decision (or accepting Christ) is not works. Kind of like accepting a rope tossed out to you if you were drowning. The drowning person is NOT saving himself, BUT must receive the rope. He keeps telling me that decision theology "cheapens God's grace". Who is right? I'm seriously outclassed in this debate because he's got Greek lexicons/dictionaries/commontaries ad naseum, and I'm a Bible only type guy. Thanks! |

3 | Receiving Christ - Works? (2) Rom 10.17 | Not Specified | Huron | 95601
This is a continuation of a previous question re: receiving Christ equals works. (My brother and I disagree on decision theology). I was out of the country when my original question was circulating. I'd like to hear some points of view regarding regeneration. Which comes first regeneration, or faith? I thought faith came first by hearing the Word (Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God). I'm sure my brother would say that regeneration comes first. Thoughts? Huron |

4 | Titus 3:5 regeneration help please | Not Specified | Huron | 95745
Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, I'd like some more information on regeneration. Seems to be two schools of thought on it. Some say regeneration is the same as being born again or converted. (According to this model, I guess you could alternately say that regeneration happens at the same time as conversion.) Others say that it is a seperate step, i.e., you are regenerated BEFORE you have faith. I did some searching last night and it seems the only place in the Bible that uses the word regeneration is Titus 3:5, and that is only in the KJV, and NASB, but not the NIV. (I only have those three versions at home.) NIV uses the term "washing of rebirth". Is regeneration the same or different from the new birth talked about in Eze. 36:26,John 1:13, John 3:3, II Cor. 5:17, I Pet 1:23, I John 5:1? In some ways I feel like I'm splitting hairs here, but resolving this will help solve some related questions for me. Thanks! |

5 | Prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) who is he? | Not Specified | Huron | 96212
In Luke 15:11-32 who are the two sons? I'm convinced that the story illustrates a sinner coming to repentance. I want to be sure that I haven't overlooked any possibilities. Is it possible the two sons represent the Jews and the Gentiles? Any other possibilities that I am overlooking? Thanks and Regards, Huron |

6 | "decision theology" I think I see it now | Not Specified | Huron | 96348
I think I see the problem now. When people hear the term "decisionism" or "decisionist" they assume that you believe in the mass produced, walk down to the alter and repeat this prayer procedural type "decision" for Christ. Am I right? |

9 | Good Pro Textus Receptus Book? | Not Specified | Huron | 125167
I've read some good stuff by Metzger that supports the use of the oldest manuscripts, and that supports newer English translations over those based on the Textus Receptus. Are there any really good PRO-TR books out there? Most of the stuff I've seen tends to use circular reasoning. I'd like to read a good pro-TR book to be really familiar with arguments from both sides of the aisle. Thanks! Huron |

11 | sound byte or context? | Not Specified | Huron | 125571
When using scripture to discuss Christian topics and support your viewpoint, how do you know how much context to use? To provide an overly simple example, 1 John 4:8 "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" Some people might argue from that verse that God wouldn't send anyone to hell, but in the context of the whole New Testament, or 1 John for that matter it obviously isn't true. So to be fair you can't use "sound bytes". To give a real world example, Romans 9:11 "For though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls," Now, if we look just at this one verse it seems to be the perfect verse in support of predestination. On the other hand, when you look at it in the context of Romans chapters 9,10,11 you see that Paul is explaining that just because the Jews have the birthright as God's chosen people that does not guarantee salvation for them. God can choose to use the Gentiles, and branch Israel could repent and be grafted back in to the tree. So, what real world rule of thumb do YOU use? Huron |

12 | Key verse of the Bible? | Not Specified | Huron | 125642
What would you say is THE key verse in the Bible? If you could just share one verse with the everyone that you met, what would it be? I'm guessing that for most people it would be John 3:16, but I would like to get some opinions. Regards, Huron |

14 | What language did Jesus use? Read? Quote | Not Specified | Huron | 142492
I have a two part question: What language did Jesus use in His daily life? Hebrew? Aramaic? Chaldean? Greek? I've been under the assumption that Jesus quoted the LXX (Septuagint) mostly. Is this true? If so, and assuming that he knew Hebrew, why didn't he use a Hebrew text? Regards! |

20 | Why so many Bibles? | Bible general Archive 3 | Huron | 166695
I really believe that the NASB, and the NASB updated version are the most accurate. When the shortcomings of the NASB are discussed, it usually regards the fact that the NASB may be difficult to read aloud due to the fact that it places the emphasis on accuracy rather than English word order. It has been said that the NASB is so accurate that you could reverse translate it back into the original Greek! The KJV, RSV, NKJV, and the NIV are also very good and have their following. The NIV may at times "interpret" rather than translate, which gives you a translation that tells you what the translators think the Greek "MEANS" rather than what it "SAYS." Usually though, the NIV translators were right on. The NIV is a very readable translation. The RSV has the flow of the KJV, but is easier to understand. It does have its detractors though, usually regarding the choice of the work young woman -vs- virgin in Isiah 7. The KJV has beautiful flow. The language is dated though, and may cause comprehension difficulty. It is a good version for memeory work because it flows so well. While it is a good literal translation, there are verses in the KJV that may not have been written in the original books of the New Testament. Examples are Mark 16:9-20, Acts 8:37, 1 John 5:7. While some people will use no other version and claim that other versions are an abomination, it is important to remember that even the KJV had much criticism when it first came out. The NKJV is also good, but relies largely on the same manuscripts as the KJV. It will include the longer ending of Mark for instance. |
