401 | who benefits most from prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 115857
I have to agree with EdB. I think we can gain a lot from our example in the Apostle Paul as cited in the following: 2 Cor 12:6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. 7To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. With all the tremendous good things Paul did AND the tremendous sacrifices he made to be a christian, I would think he above all other humans on this planet since his lifetime would have deserved some relief but the Lord didn't see fit to give it to him. Whenever I read these words I shrink with embarrassment at my feeble attempts to be a christian. Also I tend to complain about the tiny "thorns" in my life just like everyone else in the world. ALL of us should feel ashamed. We should be just thankful to be alive and well in such a country as this with all the freedoms and blessings we enjoy. I hope this gives you comfort and God bless. |

I'm not there yet but I understand it's a wonderful feeling when we can say like Paul, "to die is gain but to live is Christ." My father talks like that now. He's lived a full life, most of it in the Kingdom and is looking forward to going Home to his maker.
403 | Searching for the truth | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 115786
It matters most of all to the person who perpatrated the wrong. Please notice that Saul (later Apostle Paul) honestly thought he was doing correctly in persecuting and killing christians but the Lord Himself had to set him straight. Makes you wonder about some of the sincere conclusions we all come to in our minds. That's one reason why I love this Forum. Even the best minds like those with as much education as Saul need an ocassional humbling. If you don't get an occasional humbling from either God or His children, I'd have to say you're not active enough in His Kingdom. It's the human way of survival of the fittest in the animal kingdom. But back to your question. If one of God's children doesn't repent to the one whom he has wronged, he faces Judgment Day in dire straits. Also, I would like to think the relationship can be healed and the bond between the two can be increased and made even better after repentance and forgiveness is exchanged. But in the final analysis, like you've alluded to, we all must adopt an attitude of forgiveness and go on about our lives of shining God's light through our lives here on earth. God bless you for seeing this higher priority with our Father. |

404 | What is the "reward" ? | Mark 9:41 | Rowdy | 115763
I have to agree with you as I have spent several years overseas, 4 in Athens, Greece and another 4 in Okinawa, Japan with my family. When you spend that much time in one country, one really "soaks up" a lot more culture. We have sooo much to be thankful for in this country and the worst tragedy is we're letting it slip away from us, right before our eyes. I worry about what we're leaving to the next several generations of Americans. This is one of the reasons I encourage especially the young people in my world to think about joining the military and see the world, then come home to American and re-appreciate what we have here. I do think the devil is incredibly clever and comes up with the perfect temptations for the different cultures, countries and yes even the different generations. I think he knows the fralities and weaknesses of the us humans and can fine tune his temptations so the only way we can possibly fend off ALL of them is with God's help. The bottom line in response to your comment: Most Americans (including me) don't have a clue what the majority of the world outside the US goes through to gain just a small portion of Godliness or Christianity. I do know most of those folks do put their lives in EXTREME jeporady when they do pursue such a lifestyle. Again, I'll thank God in a public way for my being an American as well as my family. God bless. |

I'd like to add another note that just came to me. I thought of this in re-reading the discussions/posts from Kalos on this subject. I think the comparison between OT and the NT can be compared to a dead body vs. a live body. We all know the OT was nailed to the cross with Jesus as made clear in the following: Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. This doesn't mean Christ destroyed the Law of Moses or any other part of the OT. It merely means He took with him its authority to rule our lives as God's children. But just as a dead man is available for autopsy for medical purposes, etc, the OT can be taken out of its tomb and examined for our benefit. It shows us how the world got here and how God dealt with the world, especially His beloved Israelite nation. It's a wonderfully made document and should be treated as such but it can't take the place of the NT as Jesus provides a whole new law, one with vast liberties and completely perfect freedom from our sins. As such the authority in the NT is complete because Jesus has been given "all authority" as cited in Matt 28 and He delegated that authority to His official representatives, the Apostles. This is made plain in: Matt 18:18 "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, back to the dead man/live man contrast. Now we have a living, vibrant, active and powerful covenant (body of laws) with the most powerful force in the entire universe. If we abide by His Words and live our lives accordingly to the best of our ability AND put our faith in His Son's blood and grace, we'll see Heaven upon Judgment Day, just as He's promised. Hope this clears up some ambiguities in my earlier posts. God bless. |

406 | Word Study ... done away - cease | 1 Cor 13:8 | Rowdy | 115752
Sorry, I wasn't clear with my statement. In that post I was referring to whole package of empowerment received by the Apostles from the Holy Spirit upon the first day the church was established. I realize there's a wide debate about whether these powers exist in today's world. To me, this verse is very clear about the Bible being completely perfect and no need for miraculous powers in this present world. My main goal was to see if we could some kind of consensus on the Forum as to just what is a mircle? What does it mean to prophecy? And speaking in tongues? I would suggest that we stick with the Bible definitions for these activities. What do you think? God bless. |

408 | Who cares to discuss this verse? | Rom 8:19 | Rowdy | 115650
Although we can't understand the full depth of this chapter as it seems to be quite explosive in its implications, I do think that God and His creation show a wonderful quality. Just as the heavenly bodies show the tremendous design and beauty of His creation, they also show His wisdom and patience. I do think that here, Paul is referring to christians of all time from then to now and to the last day of this existing creation. Appreciate your digging this up and God bless. |

409 | Who is Saul? | 1 Sam 11:13 | Rowdy | 115646
Just insanely curious: How did you get the wrong impression that Saul or Apostle Paul was ever a Roman centurian? Thanks for the reply.
410 | Word Study ... done away - cease | 1 Cor 13:8 | Rowdy | 115496
Yes, I do believe that Paul was predicting the demise or the slow disappearance of miraculous powers in favor of the written Word in our Bibles. BUT just in case there are those that don't see it that way, we should agree on the definition of just what a miracle is. The miracles in the Bible are always depicted as something supernatural, something that goes against the laws of nature, something that is so fantastic it can't be explained any other way. For example: restoration of life to a dead body, gift of sight to a grown person born blind, restoration of a limb after being cut off, all of these w/o medical procedures or mechanical devices. Then we're talking about clear-cut, undeniable miracles manifested by human beings. Otherwise, we're talking about miracles manifested from God directly to the recipient, right? What is your opinion? God bless. |

411 | What is the "reward" ? | Mark 9:41 | Rowdy | 115489
It seems the only reward He could be referring to would be that of Heaven. You'll notice he's been talking about that subject in a round about way in verse 35. Why else would such humble men such as these give up all they had to follow Jesus for 3 and 1 half years? Apparently, Peter even left his wife and family if he had any. Throughout most of Jesus' ministry this kind of thinking usually dominated their thoughts just like it would you and me if we had been there. God bless.

I'm not sure of your message or response. Are you trying to retract your statement about the Apostle Paul being a Roman centurian? Please confirm one way or the other. IF you are still in support of that original statement, I'd like to see what credible evidence you have to support it. Certainly nothing in the Bible could possibly be used to support such a position. God bless. |

Please Gentlemen, let me apologize yet again for causing this controversy. I'm hoping you've noticed in some of my more recent posts to the Forum, I've been trying to cite more scriptures in support of my statements, especially when the discussion DOES NOT center around those proverbial Why questions. But in my defense of my original position, I still anticipate the "surging well" within my soul will cause me to continue to look for and answer those topics with the Why question in their background. So, I can only say, I have been humbled at least somewhat by all these posts from you all and for that I'm thankful. Now, Hank, I must follow up on the few challenges I've issued recently WITH scriptures to back them up. I've not seen your responses to those challenges and would appreciate your sharing your wisdom and experience with us on them. The posts I'm talking about are 114616 and 114930. I have a few more I've been "roasting" in my little brain and hope to have them posted soon. See ya and God bless. |

416 | Who is Saul? | 1 Sam 11:13 | Rowdy | 115416
Where in the Bible (or the world for that matter) could you possibly get such a story about the Apostle Paul. The latter half of Acts is devoted to the ministry of Paul. In Chapter 22, Paul gives a brief biographical sketch of his life. AND please notice NO ONE else in the NT contests this description of Paul's life OR his credenitals in ANY of the other Epistles of the NT. It's very, VERY difficult to believe you have any concrete proof to support statement but I'd be interested in hearing about it. I can only hope that God will bless you by opening your eyes to the truth as provided in His Word. |

417 | "and on their heart I will write it" | Matt 5:17 | Rowdy | 115315
I would refer you to my post no 115313. Also, we get a much clearer contrast between these two covenants shown in Hebrews 10.
418 | "and on their heart I will write it" | Jer 31:33 | Rowdy | 115313
We see the fulfillment of this prophecy from Jeremiah in the establishment of the Lord's church roughly about 33 AD. God delegated His authority to rule over such matters as cited below. Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Thus we see the transition from the OT to the NT with a much covenant, with much better promises. This is made very clear in Heb 10. The whole book Hebrews is devoted to contrasting the superiority of Christ's covenant with that of the Law of Moses. Don't get me wrong and misunderstand about the 10 commandments. Indeed, 9 of the 10 are quoted by the NT and are expanded upon. For example, we are not only to avoid "murder" with "Thou shalt not kill," now we are love and even forgive our enemies instead of going with "an eye for an eye." But the best thing about discarding the authority of the OT for us as modern christians: we get to experience true freedom from our sins. In OT era, God's people didn't have a clear picture of redemption nor did they have a clear picture of Heaven. Now we have those and much more. Our High Priest is the very Son of God whereas their's was the current son of the Levite tribe. We get to pray directly to God our Father as truly adopted sons, with Christ as our senior brother, acting as a intermediary. Yes, there's so much for which we have to be thankful. God bless all who read and obey God's Word. |
