Luke 1:56 "And Mary remained with her about three months." 2 Samuel 6:16 "David leaping and dancing before the Lord." John 6:31-35 “Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness.... The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world... I am the bread of life." _____________________________________________ The Glory Of the Lord had departed from Israel and the temple when the Ark of the Covenant was lost, and was not seen there again until Mary came with Jesus to the temple. Ezekiel 10:18 "The Glory of the Lord went forth..." Luke 2:25-32 "Now master let your servant go in peace... for my eyes have seen...a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the Glory of your people Israel." Revelation 21:2-3 "And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold the dwelling of God is with men, He will dwell with them…’" Revelation 11:19 "Then God’s temple in heaven was opened in heaven, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple... 12:1 And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars...." Genesis 3:15 "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel." Mary is an example of obedient faith in God and an image and symbol of the Church, which carries Christ into the world. For this reason she was called by the early Greek Christians, Theotokos, or God Bearer. She is also called the Mother of the Church, which is the mystical body of Christ as Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 12:12-30. |

The image of Mary as Queen of Heaven comes directly from Revelation 12:1-12. This image of the woman clothed with the sun and with a crown of tewelve stars has from the beginning been interpreted on several levels. The woman as Irael bringing forth the Messiah, the Church delivering Christ to the world and Mary bringing forth Jesus into the world. Mary fits all the images. She embodies daughter Zion, she is a symbol of the church and she is the actually mother of the Savior. So as not to make any one post too long I will follow with two more posts on Mary as the Ark of the Covenant and as Mother of God. All with appropriate references to Scripture.

With all due respect, the sin of hypocracy is not a doctinal error, but a personal sin to which everyone is susceptible and subject to correction. In fact it was Peter who first was led by God to proclaim that the Gospel was for the gentiles as well as the Jews. Acts 10 and 11.

I believe your question is important. And the answers may not be simple. That the Church was in need of reform was not in dispute. All parties agreed on that. The Church is always in need of reform as are all Christians. The question is how to accomplish the reformation? And today how to we heal the Church and restore its vital unity? I believe history is sadly repeating itself everyday with the continuing fragmentation of the Church. The Spirit and Forms of Protestanism by Louis Bouyer is good book on the subject of where the Reformation was right (primacy of grace and scripture)in it's aspirations as well as what it's flaws (extrinsic justification and abandonment of Church Tradition for private interpretation) were. It is written by a man who was both Protestant and Catholic in his life. It is not polemic and is written with a view to reconciliation. In addition to the book mentioned above, Hilaire Belloc wrote two related books: How the Reformation Happened, and Characters of the Reformation. Belloc is an excellent writer and he also was both Protestant and Catholic during his life. His writings are somewhat polemic, but he does make people and history come alive and is fair even to those whose actions or positions he may disagree with. Some of his books are available in text on the web at a variety of sites. I am sorry my answer did not address your original question. It was really more of a response to another member's comments about Constantine and the corruption of the Church in the fourth century. |

There are primary sources on the early Church. Read the Apostolic Ante Nicean Fathers who wrote before Constantine during the persecutions and see what Church and theology you see in their writings for yourself. You can access the writings on any numer of websites, Catholic or Protestant. Get the information from the primary sources and decide for yourself.

Joe, Kalos did a good job on your question. Another good piece on the questions is to be found at http://www.catholic.com/library/rapture.asp It starts out with a slyly humorous observation: "Are you Pre, Mid, or Post? If you don’t know how to answer that question, you’re probably a Catholic.....,you need a little background." |

3708 | Parable fo the Good Samaritan - Evaluate | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 25559
It is possible to see ourselves as the man on the road, beaten and left for dead. The Law, represented by the priest and levite, cannot save. In fact they avoid the man who may be dead for fear of being contaminated and made ritually impure as they are going up to the Temple in Jersualem to perform their duties. Jesus is the Good Samaritan. He is not defiled by contact with the man, but rather saves him and restores him to life. He annoints him with oil, even as the baptized are anointed with oil as they enter into Christ and share in His priestly, prophetic and kingly mission. The Samaritan pays the price of of the man's recovery and restoration to health to the innkeeper. Whenever in the Gospels Jesus touches the unclean he is not contaminated as other men are by contact with sin. Instead sin is driven out by virtue and healing grace. There are a number of ways one can look at this parable. |

3709 | Empty inside being a Roman Catholic? | James 2:17 | Emmaus | 25388
Catrose, I think it is good that your husband resorts to some kind of prayer in times of trial. It would be even better if he also did the same when not in times of trial. It is not the Rosary or the Catholic faith that makes him feel empty, it is the failure to live the Gospel more fully whether as a Catholic or not. Perhaps if he was practicing his faith more fully he would be more full of the faith. The Holy Spirit leads in these matters. The wrong way that some Catholics pratice their religion is that they do not practice it. The same is true of many Christians of any denomination. If he is being led to God through the Catholic faith don't discourage him, encourage him to go deeper.
3710 | How am I expected to be perfect? | Matt 5:48 | Emmaus | 25195
We become perfect as we are being conformed to Christ rather than the world. This is the process of sanctification. Romans 8:29; 12:2 |

3711 | Name it and claim it?????????????? | Matt 4:3 | Emmaus | 25034
I sure have a problem with it. It sound a lot like magic to me. A manipulation of God that obigates Him to do something because of the words of your spell, even if they are His words used out of context. Sound like the devil tempting Jesus. name it and claim it and these stones will become bread, Matt 4:3. Or like Simon Magus trying to buy control of the Holy Spirit's from the apostles. Acts 8:9-19 |

3712 | Renewal AGAIN to repentance? | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 25029
Joe, I like to think of it more along the lines of once saved, always being saved, unless you reject the gift of salvation and do not persevere in the faith until the end. Paul's letters are to Christian communities, but he is always warning them that they too can be cut off like those of the Hebrew covenant who rejected Christ Rom 11:22; 1 Cor 10:12; 1Tim 1:18-19. It is not God's faithfulness in question, but the faithfulness of His people in both the Old and New Covenant. We are just as free to reject or disgard his gift as were those in the Old Covenant. God does not force salvation on anyone. It is a gift freely given which must be freely accepted or rejected like any other gift. It is possible to fall away or reject God's gift and then again repent Luke 15:11-32. Do you think this father would have only given his prodigal son one chance. I doubt it. The older brother I wouldn't wan to count on. The reason God delays is to give us the chance to repent and finally persevere in His gift of faith and justification.
3713 | Isn't my Mother in Heaven? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 24236
Your aunt seems peculiarly lacking in the virtues of faith, hope and charity in light of your loss. But the Witnesses do not even believe that Jesus is God or the second Person of the Trinity. Where did Elijah and Moses comes from when Jesus was speaking to them on the Mount of Transfiguration? Matt 17:2-3. Of course, according to the logic expressed by your aunt, Jesus must be Jehovah or a very close relative, maybe the Son of Jehovah, if the dead came out of the ground to meet him. I guess Jesus is also right about God being the God of the living, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Maybe the Father sent them from Abraham's bosom. Luke 16:19-31 Keep the faith and the hope and pray for your aunt. |

3714 | How can we be sure of eternal salvation? | Phil 1:6 | Emmaus | 24135
We can be morally certain that if we persevere to the end in faith, Mark 13:13, that we will be saved since God is faithful to keep His promises. But we can not have absolute certainty without denying God's gift of our free will and our freedom to reject His gift of justification and salvation. A gift that cannot be rejected or discarded is no gift at all. See Adam and Eve in Genesis and Romans 11:22, 1 Cor 10:12
3715 | What is a two-edge sword? | Heb 4:12 | Emmaus | 24132
I believe Heb 4:12-13 is referring to not just to the written word of God, but in a deeper sense to Jesus himself, the living Word of God. " No creature is concealed from Him...to whom we must render an account. See John 1:1 and Rev 1:6. The written Word comes forth from the Living Word, Jesus. |

3716 | What does Matthew 24: 28 mean? | Matt 24:28 | Emmaus | 23963
The RSV translation of Matt 24:28 has it: "Wherever the body is ther the eagles will be gathered together." The passage refers to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD and the eagles are the eageles on the standards of the Romans who scavange the city laid waste. In the Old testament the translation is "vultures." In either case it refers to scavangers, symbolizing the pagan nations who brought suffering on Isreal. Dt 28:49, Hab 1:8, Hos 8:1. |

3718 | in what way does God | Matt 7:3 | Emmaus | 23958
The perfect illustration of how God blesses the poor in spirit Matt 5:3 is given in Luke 18:9-14, the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Which man was poor in spirit and what was his reward?
3719 | Is the devil a real person? | Matt 4:1 | Emmaus | 23796
The devil is a real person just as are all the angels. The Catholic Church teaches that also and has not changed it's teaching. The biblical citations are too numerous to mention. One might start with the temptaion of Jesus and all that he said abou the devil and hell. Listening to a Bahai about what the Catholic Church teaches is rather ill advised. You go to the sources of the organization not another party to learn what they tesch.
3720 | must we eat Jesus literally? | John 6:53 | Emmaus | 23795
Kama17, There is nothing to indicate Jesus meant anything other than what he said. There is no indication that what he said he meant figuratively. Otherwise why did so many leave him in John 6. And Paul certainly took Jesus literally in 1 Corinthians 10:16 and 11:27-30. What does "is" mean. The sacraments, whether you believe in one, two or seven are all real encounters with the real Christ. This was never in dispute for the first thousand years of Christianity. Do the research and you will see it for yourself. It may be a mysery as great as the Trinity, but it is truth nonetheless. |
