341 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | glory777 | 10337
I believe that speaking in tongues is a sign, but I also know a lot of people who are saved and who have the Holy Spirit residing in them who don't. My denomination believes scripture teaches that when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, tongues can be a sign and usually is. But when you receive the bapitsm you don't just receive some of the gifts, you receive them all. You may only use one, or you may use many. The apostles were saved, but were not baptized in the Spirit until Pentecost. The man crucified with Jesus was saved, but did not have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is desirable to have the gifts, but read 1 Cor. 13. If I never spoke in tongues and had as much love for people as Jesus did, it would be fine with me. That is the greatest gift and everything else is just frosting. Concentrate on that. Peace to you. Debbie |

342 | Literal or Paraphrase Translation? | Bible general Archive 1 | glory777 | 10233
I agree that for study, the literal would probably be better, but I had heard that every time you start reading the bible again, use a different version. I started out with the King James. Then went to the NIV. What an eye opener. The Amplified, although wordy, gave even more insight. the list goes on. Every time a different version is read, it can show you more and different aspects of what you have read previously. It is like the Holy Spirit keeps opening new windows to the infinite view of God.
343 | Why will we know each other? | Bible general Archive 1 | glory777 | 10232
Not so much a verse, but if we are changed as Jesus was changed after He died, where doors and walls did not mean anything and He could be here and then there in an instant, so shall we. However, the apostles knew Him, He still had the scars, so even though molecularly He was changed, His appearance was recognizable.
344 | Do humans become angels? | Bible general Archive 1 | glory777 | 10171
Angels were created by God to do service to Him and praise and worship Him. A finite number were created. When a believer dies, they are changed but not to an angel. We will know each other, but our likeness will be with Jesus. We are sons of the Most High, we will be sons, and therefore not servants.
345 | Who is responsible for Jesus' death? | John 19:23 | glory777 | 10092
Steve- You might be interested in another viewpoint. I have a small web page and if you click on "At the Cross" you'll see my version. Go to http://www.rosehedge.homestead.com/rosehedge.html. Awesome to think what could have happened. Just read in a book by Max Lucado that the victory was already won in Gethsemane. When Jesus bent His desire to the Father's. Something I had never thought of before - something I will think a lot about now. Joy and Peace- Debbie |

346 | How to know calling in your life? | Bible general Archive 1 | glory777 | 10010
The Spirit Filled Life bible gives an explanation of the gift of prophesy as a divinely inspired and anointed utterance; Supernatural procalmation in a known language; Manifestation of the Spirit of God - not of intellect (1 Cor. 12:7); May be possessed and operated by all who have the infilling of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 14:31); Intellect, faith, and will are operative in this gift, but its exercise is not intellectually based. it is calling forth words from the Spirit of God. It also gives two definitions. "1. The prophet is a spiritually mature spokesman/proclaimer with a special, divinely focused message to the church or the world. 2. A person uniquely gifted at times with insight into future events." How do you know if you have a calling for prophecy? Is there any in your church who are mature spiritually with a gifting toward prophecy? If you feel that you have a word from the Lord, tell them first and see if they confirm what you feel the Lord is laying on your heart. If you feel it is a prophesy for the future, write it down. Remember, in history a true prophet was always accurate in his predictions given to him by the Lord. |

347 | Satan's Power (2:18) | 1 Thessalonians | glory777 | 10005
God is Soveriegn. Satan can only do what God allows him to do. He is the accuser of the saints (you and me) but thank Jesus for His blood that negates any accusation. Satan can't be all places at once, God is. Satan can't read our minds (although he sure can read body language), God knows every thought we have before we think it. Satan can't make us do anything. He can tempt us, but with the Holy Spirit sealing us and Jesus blood covering us he can never take away our sonship. The evil one can use a bad situation to try to break us, but God will use the brokenness to reveal His strength and glory and show Himself supreme. It may look like Satan has the upper hand at times, but we have to look at the long picture. We have authority over him, and we already have the victory through Christ. If he can fool enough people that he is in control, he thrives on it. He is a liar and the father of lies.
348 | What separates Evangelicals, Catholics? | Rom 3:28 | glory777 | 10003
As a former Catholic, this question hits home. I do know that the Catholic church has undergone some changes since I left and become more biblical in some parishes. The bible is being read by more and more of the people. The idea of "Limbo" where babies go if they are not baptized before they die has been thrown out. I don't know what they believe about unbaptized babies who die now. But they still hold to the idea of Purgatory being a place one goes to after they die if they have any unconfessed sin. They still take money to say prayers for those who have died so they don't have to stay in purgatory so long. They pray to so-called "saints" and angels to help them and their dead loved ones and they venerate Mary and have special days to honor her. How many shrines have you seen for her? To me, if you are praying to someone other than God, it is idolatry. They do believe that without the death and resurrection of Jesus there is no salvation, but faith is not enough. Works, works, works. I may sound a little bitter, but some of my family are very strong catholics, and their belief that if they go to church and say the same prayers over and over, they will go to Heaven scares me. They believe so much in tradition that they don't even want to question it. Do they love God? Yes. Do they love Jesus? Yes. But I keep praying that God will keep the evil one from them and remove the scales he has covering their eyes so they can see the truth.
349 | Revelation in the Gospels? | NT general Archive 1 | glory777 | 9847
Jim- Just one last note from me. I know that at some time I will be in front of the One who wrote the book. In giving an account of myself I would rather He knew that I believed His Word and erred because I wanted to believe in Him literally and trust every Word He said than to look and believe what every one else thought He said. The basic fact is that Jesus said the only way you can come to the Father is through Him. If I believed the parables were literal (even though Jesus and the people knew they were parables) I would be trusting in the Word in a more childlike way than those who over analyze it and take it apart to fit every other theory and scientific explanation given, or throw parts out altogether or rationalize it as nothing more than fiction because it doesn't fit what we understand. Keep searching, but more importantly, keep reading that Bible! May God open your eyes and the Holy Spirit give you understanding, for we all need more of that. Debbie |

350 | what does this verse mean? | Luke 19:40 | glory777 | 9846
Yvette- I think it means that the praises given Jesus were legitimate praise. Even nature knew that Jesus was and is Messiah, King of King and Lord of Lords, the Creator. I was reading a book by Tommy Tenney in which he pointed out that while the top Jews in the Synagogue were having a church service, they heard a disturbance in the street of legitimate praise and worship and told the people to be quiet - there was church going on in the synaqogue. They were so involved in looking good to each other and acting pious that they missed God. I also think of the verse (Rom 8:22)and a lot of the chapter that points out that nature is twisted since the fall of Adam and even it recognized Jesus as Lord. HOpe this helps. Regardless, just keep on praising the Lord! Deb |

351 | Multiple authors for Paul's epistles? | NT general Archive 1 | glory777 | 9818
Both of those just attribute the letter as being written by Paul. For 1 Thes.1:1 "Paul shared authorship of 1 and 2 Thess. with Silvanus and Timothy. Timothy a young Jewish understudy of Paul, also joined with Paul in the writing of 2 Cor., Pil., Col., and Philem. Silvanus, known as Silas in Acts, was a leader in the church in Jerusalem (Acts 15:22) and a prophet (Acts 15:32). Later Silvanus shared in the writing of 1 Pet. (5:12). He was therefore an associate both of Peter and Paul. I never really thought about it before, but I also think that the letters were kind of a joint effort, or at least read by the others mentioned who may have also had inspiration from God and were included. I've seen it happen in church where one will prophesy and another will add to it. Hope it helped. Deb |

353 | Revelation in the Gospels? | NT general Archive 1 | glory777 | 9701
Jim- First, about the facts of the gospels. There were other sources at the time that Jesus could have related His experiences to, such as his mother. And you are right, He did have time after His ressurection to relate other information. But scripture says the Word is God-breathed and inspired by the HOly Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16) and the gospels are scripture. How can you explain the fall of Lucifer? No one was there to witness it. It was given by inspiration. If these words and/or visions were given to the prophets, were they more believable than Matthew, Mark, and the others? As to creation being in the number of days that were written in scripture, I find this a lot more easier to believe than what science is trying to get us to believe. But if you question, looking to find scripture as allegorical, what parts are you going to say are just stories and not fact? Instead of trying to fit the Word to what science says happened, go the opposite way and see if science can fit God's Word. Archaelogists are finding more and more facts proving the OT stories true that they said couldn't happen. How long until they realize the "big bang" was actually a "spoken Word"? I find the temptation of Eve fascinating in this regard. She had the Word of God right with her, but she listened to the other who said He couldn't mean what He said. God bless Debbie |

354 | how do you exersise this violent force | Matt 11:12 | glory777 | 9602
Johngo- In the notes in the Spirit filled Life bible it states "the idea in this verse is that the kingdom of heaven, which Jesus set up as a powerful movement or reign among men (suffers violence), requires of them an equally strong and radical reaction. The violent then who take it by force are people of keen enthusiasm and commitment who are willing to respond to and propagate with radical abondonment the message and dynamic of God's reign." I think when John the Baptist began his ministry, it was like an alarm to Satan that his powerful reign was almost over and his territory was about to be torn from him. His warfare against God and men of God intensified. I think it is still going on now, and we have to be violent in return, putting on the "whole armour of God... and weilding the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God" (Eph. 6). Swords were used, not just for defense, but to attack. Use the Word to claim the Kingdom, use the Word to spread the Kingdom. Use the Word to grow in the Kingdom. Use the Word as Jesus did to keep Satan and his forces at bay. We all struggle, but since Jesus rose, we have His power and are stronger than the enemy. God bless and give you strength. Debbie |

355 | why men struggle - being head of house | 2 Timothy | glory777 | 9533
Unfortuantely, I think it is in large part because of the culture we live in. As we drift away from the Bible and God being the focus, we replace our focus with "me". Women think of submission as being unequal and don't understand the importance of the role as "helpmeet". So their is a striving for control. Men don't take on the role as spiritual head of house and if they heard that they were head of the house, they don't understand the biblical function of the head of house. If both of these roles are understood before marriage, a lot of problems would not crop up. This does not apply to all men and women, understand, but those that do not have solid biblical knowledge of the plan of God for the family. Debbie |

Ok, Nolan- Now tell me where I can read this first hand. Some information may not be reagarded as Canon, but just as other books written by other authors on different subjects can give us insight, I would be interested in this. Thanks, Deb |

358 | Chronology of creation? | Gen 1:1 | glory777 | 9303
I believe that sometimes we get too serious. I think there are many times that God is laughing (maybe at our efforts to categorize and figure Him out?) and wants us to have some fun too. Bible study and sharing should have an element of laughter once in a while. Thank you. I wish I could have thought of the line, but it was Pastor Laurie that said it. Peace and Joy- Debbie |

359 | 12 Tribes of Isreal? | Bible general Archive 1 | glory777 | 9299
I read that the tribe of Dan migrated toward Europe and there are areas that are attributed to the tribe of Dan today. Don't have a clue as to how much truth is in this. Consider Danube, Denmark, and other places that have "Dan" or a derivitive of it. I think this source said that when a tribe moved, or a person or tribe founded a city or place, they named it after themselves. Sound possible? Debbie |

360 | Chronology of creation? | Gen 1:1 | glory777 | 9234
In the chronological history in chapter 1 it is plants, animals, man. Plants were created for animals and man to eat - no pain, death, fear were in the earth at that time. Everything at that time was "good", but it was not until Adam was created that it was "very good". I also just read, or heard, that when Adam saw all the animals and realized that they were male and female (all had an opposite sex) that he realized that none of them would be an appropreate helpmate for him. I think it was Greg Laurie (www.harvest.org) that said Adam probably didn't think a hippo would be a suitable counterpart :) . Debbie |
