3121 | BOOK OF LIFE | NT general Archive 1 | kalos | 674
Rev 3:5 "Book of Life." A divine journal records the names of all those whom God has chosen to save and who, therefore, are to possess eternal life ( Rev 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; 21:27,: 22:19; compare Dan 12:1; Luke 10:20). Under no circumstances will He erase those names . . . , as city officials often did of undesirable people on their roles. (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1996) . . . Phil 4:3. "Book of Life." In eternity past, God registered all the names of His elect in that book which identifies those inheritors of eternal life . . . (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1828). . . . When were our names written in the book of life? "From the foundation of the world." Before the first man was ever born, the names of the elect were written in the book of life. . . . Rev 17:8 NASB "The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come." . . . 13:8 (NASB) All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. . . . "Lamb slain". The Lord Jesus who died to purchase the salvation of those whom God had chosen was fulfilling an eternal plan. . . . "from the foundation of the world". According to God's eternal, electing purpose before creation, the death of Christ seals the redemption of the elect forever (compare Acts 2:23; 4:27, 28). Antichrist can never take away the salvation of the elect. The eternal registry of the elect will never be altered, nor will the saved in the Antichrist's day worship him. 3125 | WAS THE ANGEL JESUS | Genesis | kalos | 622
" . . . Traditional Christian interpretation has held that [the Angel of the Lord] was a preincarnate manifestation of Christ as God's Messenger-Servant. It may be, however, that, as the Lord's personal messenger who represented Him and bore His credentials, the angel could speak on behalf of (and so be identified with) the One who sent him . . . Whether this 'angel' was the second person of the Trinity remains therefore uncertain." (Zondervan NASB Study Bible, p. 26)

3127 | WILL GOD PUNISH | Ex 20:5 | kalos | 615
"Moses had made it clear that children were not punished for the sins of their parents (Deut 24:16; see Ezek 18:19-32), but children would feel the impact of breaches of God's law by their parents' generation as a natural consequence of its disobedience, its hatred of God. Children reared in such an environment would imbibe and then practice similar idolatry, thus themselves expresing hateful disobedience. The difference in consequence served as both a warning and a motivation. The effect of a disobedient generation was to plant wickedness so deeply that it took several generations to reverse." 3128 | What is the best version of the Bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 603
. . . The best Bible version is the one YOU use -- the one you can understand AND trust. . . . If you asked 20 different people what's the best version, you would get 20 different answers. . . . First you have to answer the question, best for what? What will you be using this Bible for -- general reading, devotional reading, personal study, evangelism, teaching youth, etc.? . . . I personally use 16 different versions of the Bible. What are my top recommendations? . . . They are, in alphabetical order: . . . The Amplified Bible . . . New American Standard Bible . . . New International Version . . . New King James Version. . . . Which is my personal favorite over all, for reading, study, teaching, memorization, devotional reading, etc.? It's the New American Standard Version of the Bible. The New American Standard has been widely acclaimed as "the most literally accurate translation" from the original languages. Today the NASB remains the most literally accurate Bible in the English language. I use many translations every week, but after 30 years of reading, studying, teaching and praying in the NASB, it is my personal favorite over all the others. . . . The advocates of the King James Only movement are violently opposed to any and all modern translations. Their view is the KJV is the only perfect (without error) English Bible in existence. I merely define their views, as I understand them. I refuse to be drawn into a dispute over the King James Only controversy. I personally love and respect the King James and have done all my memory work in it. But is it the most literally accurate Bible in the English language? No. While it contains a remarkable degree of general accuracy, it cannot and does not make the claim for itself of being the only perfect English translation. NO TRANSLATION IS PERFECT, INERRANT AND INFALLIBLE. Inerrancy can be said to apply only to the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. No honest Bible scholar would claim otherwise. . . . Brothers and sisters, let us live at peace with one another. Back to my original answer: The best Bible version is the one you use -- the one you can understand AND trust. |

3129 | Are the unevangelized people really lost | Rom 2:15 | kalos | 596
Are the unevangelized people really lost? . . . Yes, they are. How shall they believe? "...believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved..." (Acts 16:31) It follows then that not to believe is not to be saved. "...And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?..." (Rom 10:14 NKJV). Is God's judgment upon the unevanglized a just judgment? . . . Yes, it is. Romans 2:2 "But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things." . . . What have the unevangelized done to deserve such condemnation? . . . "God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them" (Rom 1:19 TEV) . . . Today's English Version Romans 1:18-32 . . . God's anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. God punishes them, because what can be known about God is plain to them, for God himself made it plain. Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all! They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness. They say they are wise, but they are fools; instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortals or birds or animals or reptiles. . . . And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen. Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing. . . . Because those people refuse to keep in mind the true knowledge about God, he has given them over to corrupted minds, so that they do the things that they should not do. They are filled with all kinds of wickedness, evil, greed, and vice; they are full of jealousy, murder, fighting, deceit, and malice. They gossip and speak evil of one another; they are hateful to God, insolent, proud, and boastful; they think of more ways to do evil; they disobey their parents; they have no conscience; they do not keep their promises, and they show no kindness or pity for others. They know that God's law says that people who live in this way deserve death. Yet, not only do they continue to do these very things, but they even approve of others who do them. |

3130 | Is John 6:66 the answer to 666 riddle? | John 6:66 | kalos | 586
Please note that the chapter and verse divisions are not inspired of God as is the text of the Bible. Rather, they are man made. There are many, many interpretations of the meaning of the number 666, ranging from the ridiculous to the absurd. If you will go to bible.crosswalk.com and click on "Bible Study Tools," you will find links to a dozen respected commentaries online. Looking up John 13:18 in these commentaries will give you far more insight into the signficance of the number 666 than I could possibly provide in one brief answer. . . . Here is a short answer to your question: "When Antichrist is finally revealed, there will be some way to identify him with this basic number of a man, or his name may have the numerical equivalent of 666 . . . Because this text reveals very little about the meaning of 666, it is unwise to speculate beyond what is said" in the text. (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 2011) |

3132 | What are the Nephilim? | Gen 6:4 | kalos | 561
The Nephilim in the Bible are "people of great size and strength. The Hebrew word means 'fallen ones.' In men's eyes they were the 'mighty men...of old, men of renown,' but in God's eyes they were sinners ('fallen ones') ripe for judgment." (Zondervan NASB Study Bile, p. 12)
3133 | TRINITY | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 543
Basically the Trinity is one What (God) and three Who's (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Can the Trinity be explained? Not by me. I never try to explain that which cannot be explained. However, I'll do my best to simplify the definition of the doctrine. I make no attempt to explain the Trinity, only to define it. "V. THE TRINITY . . . "A. Definition. There is only one God, but in the unity of the Godhead there are three eternal and coequal Persons, the same in substance but distinct in subsistence. . . . "Proof. 1. O.T. intimations. The O.T. does not reveal the Trinity but it allows for the later revelation of it." See Gen. 1:1, 26; Isa. 6:8; Gen 22:11, 15-16. . . . "2. N.T. confirmation. In the N.T. there is clear revelation that Father, Son, and Spirit are God; thus a Triunity or Trinity (neither is a biblical word)." See John 6:27; Eph 4:6; Heb 1:8; Acts 5:3-4. These Scriptures indicate that the Father is God, Jesus Christ is God, and the Spirit is God. One God -- three persons. "The three Persons are associated equally and as one (Matt 28:19; "name"; 2 Cor 13:14)." (All quotes are from The Ryrie Study Bible, p. 1936, Moody Press) |

3134 | Is there no volition? | John 15:4 | kalos | 535
I'm not sure what my answer regarding the fruit of the Spirit has to do with the doctrine of election. I fail to see the connection. . . . Of course man has limited free will. Believing on Christ (commiting oneself to Him) for salvation most definitely involves an act of the will on the part of the individual. . . . As far as unconditional election, I do not believe I mentioned any such thing in my answer re John 15:4. . . . I know of no one who believes that if someone sins it is because he was not truly chosen. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, including the elect, who exist, regardless of how one defines election. . . . "Is it possible the elect cannot see their own sin?" No, because no one can be saved unless and until he sees his own sin. . . . "Post-election grace" is a term I am not familiar with. . . . Yes, I agree with you that obedience has something to do with it. Our obedience is an evidence of genuine saving faith. However, obedience is the result, not the cause, of our salvation. . . . Works are not essential to salvation. Rom 3:28 NIV "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law." See also Eph 2:8-9. Properly understood, James and Romans do NOT contradict each other. However, proper understanding of the Scriptures does not come from a casual reading or dogmatic interpretation of them. . . . Works are not essential to salvation -- they are the result of salvation and evidence of genuine saving faith. "Not of works lest any man should boast." This remains true no matter what Scriptures or human reasoning one uses to contradict it. |

3135 | AGE OF ACCOUNTIBILITY | Bible general Archive 1 | kalos | 532
Although a popular belief, there is no mention of an "age of accountability" in Scripture. At age 13 Jewish males have their bar-mitzvah and become "sons of the law." For a more complete definition, look it up. At what age are we conscious of and responsible for our sins before God? This would vary from one individual to the next.
3136 | Saved by belief or belief and baptism? | NT general Archive 1 | kalos | 515
Short answer: Baptism is merely an outward symbol of an inward reality. 1 Pe 3:21 NASB "Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ," "Though water itself cannot save, baptism with water is the vivid symbol of the changed life of one who has a conscience at peace with God through faith in Christ." (Ryrie Study Bible) . . . "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law " (Rom 3:28 NIV). We are justified by faith alone. We are saved by grace through faith plus nothing. We are not saved by grace through faith PLUS baptism. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." Eph 2:8-9 NASB |

3137 | Do all Christians agree on the rapture? | 1 Thessalonians | kalos | 507
There is more than one interpretation of the doctrine of the rapture, as is the case with many Bible doctrines, especially when it comes to the doctrine of future things (prophecy). . . . The main differences of opinion concern the time of the rapture. The primary theories are: 1) Pretribulation rapture; 2) Midtribulation rapture; 3) Posttribulation rapture; 3) Partial rapture, which is sort of a Marine Corps rapture where only the perfect, only the brave, only the few are worthy to be raptured before the wrath of God is poured out; 5) Postmillenial rapture; and 6) Amillenialist rapture. Take your pick. (. . . There is also the new theory of No Rapture.) . . . For detailed explanations of the above views of the rapture, see the Ryrie Study Bible, Moody Press, in Ryrie's article A SYNOPSIS OF BIBLE DOCTRINE, The Doctrine of Future Things. |

3138 | Seventy Weeks? | Dan 9:24 | kalos | 505
The following may not be the answer you're looking for, but I don't know how else to adequately answer your question without quoting 300 pages on the subject. . . . The short answer to your question is yes, we can make sense out of Daniel's prophecy of Seventy Weeks -- but not in 70 words or less. There are some excellent study Bibles and Christian books out there that give an accurate, reliable interpretation of the Book of Daniel. And then, of course, there are the usual works of sensationalism and teachers of false doctrine (many of them on the bestseller lists) to beware of. I would like to recommend a few excellent study Bibles, published by reputable publishers and written or edited by qualified teachers of the Bible whose teaching is in the mainstream of the historic Christian faith. . . . Of course any list will have its critics and detractors. I am not a Bible scholar. What I am is a lifelong student of the Bible. My top recommendations, in alphabetical order, are: . . . The MacArthur Study Bible ( Word Publishing, edited by John MacArthur) . . . NASB Study Bible (Zondervan) . . . NIV Study Bible (Zondervan) . . . The Ryrie Study Bible (Moody Press, edited by Charles Caldwell Ryrie) This list is by no means comprehensive. It is based upon my personal study of the Bible for over 30 years. My sincere apologies to whoever may be offended by the omission from this list of their favorite study Bible. |

3139 | Is repentance required? | Ex 20:13 | kalos | 475
No, you need to do more than admit your sin. You need to repent of it. To repent is to change one's mind; to change the way you think and act. Don't take my word for it -- look it up in any Bible dictionary or English dictionary. It involves more than a feeling of remorse. It also involves more than just an admission of guilt. A person could admit that he sinned without ever changing the way he thinks and acts -- without ever turning from the sin and toward Christ. |

3140 | Isn't adultrey grounds for divorce? | Hosea | kalos | 454
Yes, in the N.T. grounds for divorce are limited to sexual immorality (adultery, fornication) and desertion. In both the O.T. and N.T., divorce is PERMITTED, but not COMMANDED. "Therefore, God would allow Hosea to stay in that marriage. . . . .'They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way' (Matt 19:7-8 NASB). In regard to your question, the key word in verse 8 is "permitted". The Jewish religious leaders used the word "command", but Jesus used the word "permit".
