281 | "All things belong to you" means what? | 1 Cor 3:21 | Country Girl | 127775
I would infer a lot from the context: 1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 1 Cor 3:17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. 1 Cor 3:18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 1 Cor 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, "He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS"; 1 Cor 3:20 and again, "THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS." 1 Cor 3:21 So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you, 1 Cor 3:22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 1 Cor 3:23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God. We must remember Corinth in the first century was one of the world's most well developed cities. They even thought about making a canal across their isthmus long before it was actually built in the past century. So they were very modern but they also had all the sin and controversies to go with it. Paul dealt with a lot of problems detailed throughout both 1 and 2 Corinthians. Blessings to you. I read over my original post. I guess I must have been a blonde that day as it does look a little cryptic. Repeated for reference: 1 Cor 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. I was trying to say that the Greeks were famous for being very modern and innovative thinkers (philosophers) in their world. They thought they were the cream of the crop when it comes to a modern progressive world of thinkers and running a modern government. I lived in Athens, Greece for four years and have visited Corinth several times. They were both great cities two thousand years ago, much like many of our modern cities in this country. When I read these words from Paul, my mind reverts to the 7 letters from John in Revelation. There most of the 7 congregations received rather strong chastisement to look at themselves and re-evaluate their ideas on real and genuine Godliness as they had NOT reached it. Yes, all of us here on earth, we all have every blessing from God as Paul tells the Corinthians but we must be on constant guard, lest we lose what we have, including our very own salvation. Our relationship with God is such a fragile thing from our perspective. God of course doesn't move or vary in this relationship. We as humans are the ones who are fickle and want to have our desires fulfilled. Instead, God would like to see us grow and mature, matching our priorities to His and thus grow less dependent on fulfilling those desires and instead see that He takes care of ALL our needs and will fulfill those wants and desires that are in accordance with His Will. Quite often our physical possessions get in the way between us and our God and prevent this kind of good, spiritual growth. We must realize our most precious possessions are those that are spiritual like our relationship with our spiritual forefathers and our incredibly precious relationship with God and His Son. I hope this is a little more clear. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

283 | Is it ever okay to judge others? | 1 Cor 5:12 | Country Girl | 126618
You've received many good responses but I'd like to throw mine in for your consideration. First of all, I would refer you to James. James 2:14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? James 2:17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. James 2:18 But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." James 2:20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? James 2:22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; James 2:24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. James 2:26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. So we see that we as christians having true faith in our Lord, we will be producing works to show that faith. Christ made this plain in his discussion about our being part of His vineyard. In order for us to maintain that connection to our Lord, we must produce fruit of our faith and not be cut off. So when we see our fellow christians having difficulty in this area, we should love them enough to talk to them and strive to assist them in being fruitful. If a person refuses in this effort to be fruitful, we shouldn't judge Him as we can't see into his mind or his conscience and know his actual motivation unless he tells us. But we can at least see his fruit or the lack thereof and assist him with love and concern for his soul. In the final analysis, we humans must be very careful in judging the producitivity or fruitfulness of fellow christians as shown in Jesus parable of those men with 5, 2 and 1 talent(s). Instead Jesus encourages us to allow the wheat and tares grow together and He will determine the genuine christian from the imitators. See Matt 13. Hope this helps and blessings to you. |

284 | One God, One Jesus Christ | 1 Cor 8:5 | Country Girl | 130272
So cutting to the bottom line: Do you actively and sincerely confess that Jesus IS indeed the only living and begotten Son of God Almighty, the one and only Savior of the World. Jesus Christ is the one single way we (you and the rest of the world) can be assured of going to Heaven. Without this confirmation or confession on your part, you're going to keep on running into a lot of flak and bad or negative response to your posts here on the Forum. We really CANNOT apologize for taking that stand as it's very clearly announced up front to ALL participants before registering to join the Forum. We do hope and pray that you can confess His Name as Lord and Master. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Sounds like a "win-win" to me. Now, have you been baptized for the remission of your sins, in accordance with Acts 2? Praise the Lord. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Your answer seems to be carefully crafted. I'd like to make certain. Have you been baptized as described in Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Also Jn 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. I'm not getting the strong confirmation that you understand how critical and totally important it is to recognize that Jesus Christ is every bit as important and powerful throughout this whole process of Salvation and getting to Heaven as God, His Father. If we can't get that confirmation from you, then there's not much more we can do for you. However, go in peace with God's blessings. Country Girl PS: Yes, I was baptized at 13, for the remission of my sins, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. |

288 | Staying together before marriage. | 1 Cor 8:9 | Country Girl | 127997
I can only remind you that since you question it and you know the temptations you are causing yourself, it's not wise to follow this practice. The following verse from Paul doesn't apply only to eating, the principle applies to our whole christianity. Rom 14:23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. Instead Paul admonishes in: Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Since it's obvious you've already indicated you can't possibly be doing this sleeping on the bed with the woman of your life with a completely clear conscience, I would advise you to stop immediately. Sure it would be wise to show your girlfriend when you're making such a choice. Among those reasons would be your resolution for both of you to follow God's wishes on His priorities and set a precedant of following Him for the entire duration of your relationship together. All of us will praying that you following your conscience in accordance with God's Word. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

289 | searching for the truth | 1 Cor 11:3 | Country Girl | 125502
I would like to think you're on the right track, but then I thought I'd contribute. In my opinion, God looks at this issue rather simply and expects us as His children to look at it just as simply. Since the very first, from Cain and Able to King Saul, all the way through the Law of Moses and the rest of the Bible, it's always been a simple matter of obedience or submission to God's way. Saul found that out, just like Cain, Nadib and Abihu, Ananias and Saphira did and many, many others. Each person has to make up his own mind by reading the whole Bible and drawing his own conclusion. Is it going to be God's way or does a person insist on seeing it his way and offer God a counter proposal? Anything else other than God's way is unacceptable. Now that's NOT to say that there is no Grace, Mercy or Forgiveness for indeed, thanks be to God there is, but God doesn't want us taking it for granted. We must do our dead level best to obey as much as we can, then His Grace will cover the rest. Just like we as parents want our kids to obey us in their role as obedient children, God wants the same. Just like Jesus portrayed with his approval of little children coming to Him. There's nothing we could possibly do to come up with to substitute for simple obedience to God's Will. Would you not agree with that? Hoping for a positive response and blessings to you. Country Girl |

On the other hand, I would point out, it is JUST as important and required that the man in this relationship live up to his vow and lay down life literally if that's what it comes to, in order to keep his wife and serve her just as Christ did for His beloved bride, the church. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

I would like to agree with the overall gist of your message however, I would have to say you didn't go back early enough. It seems to me that the church started to slowly decline and the planting of seeds of apostacy soon after the last Apostle died as Paul predicted. We saw in the Garden of Eden, in the condition of the world just before its destruction and in virtually every large collection (nation) of mankind since then, that we don't have it within ourselves to live up to God's Perfect Standard, as endorsed by His Word, Pr 14:12. Without God's or Jesus' physical presence in our lives, every day, every hour, we just can't adhere to God's Perfect Level of Godliness in our lives, so it was inevitable that the church would go defective as compared to Her Perfect Condition when the Apostles were guiding Her every move. But without that divine Guidance from the Holy Spirit, the church was certainly headed for the apostacy. I'm thinking God knew that all the time. He never meant for mankind or the church to have the benefit of His Son's physical presence in the world. He sent His Son for the primary purpose of saving the world from our sins by dying and manking the Perfect Sacrifice. But Christ's life also set the Perfect Standard for us to follow, mostly by studying His Words, His Deeds and imitating His life in general. That's where God's Grace and Mercy comes in. Where we ALL fail so miserably to make that mark or anywhere even close to that of our Lord, our God and Father covers us with His Love and Mercy. Only by the Grace of God, can any of us ever hope to make it to Heaven. Yes, I must agree there is no one group of people here on earth who have ALL of what it takes to make the perfect church, mainly because there's no one person who can even come close to Christ's standard of imitating God and His amazing Love and Compassion to an Infinite degree. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

I've been following all of the posts on this thread as the topic is very interesting but I'm hoping all of you can tackle a somewhat related subject. What do we as modern christians mean when we use the words such as spiritual gifts, speaking in tongues and all other miraculous powers? How do we determine if they're from God or not? What do we use for a standard for that evaluation in today's world? Can we be certain? I'm hoping to get responses from as many of you as possible from the Forum. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

I hope that your posted suggestion is made with "tongue in cheek," in jest. I think almost everyone likes to think the world is a better place since most of the developed world at least have access to a copy of the Bible sometime in their lifetime in a language they can understand. We have to remember that along with Christ's main mission of saving the world, he knew the high costs He was demanding for the Christ-like lifestyle would mean division for some folks, even between family members. So there's always going to be controversy in this world, until at least it ends with Judgment Day soon thereafter. Our job as christians here on earth is to glorify God as best we can and spread the Good News of His Son's Gift of Salvation. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

I too am most grateful for your posts to the Forum as you have a keen mind and are so devoted to studying God's Word and to the unity of the Lord's Body. If it's one thing I've learned about human beings, it is that we tend to be reactionary. Our basic instinct is to react to the circumstances and the actions that are placed (mostly by God) in our presence. Very, very rarely do we as humans act in a pro-active state and even rarer still do we act pro-actively in a Godly cause. So what I'm saying the Reformation AND the Restoration were both reactions from great men who saw the inadequacies of their current world and sought to improve upon them. All of us could benefit from the words of Paul by re-reading Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Thus we all must resolve to wake up every day, reforming and restoring our soul to re-commit ourselves to living that actual life of sacrifice to our Lord. It takes work, real genuine dedicated work to remember this when the world tempts us...why it even shouts at us "to leave that spiritual stuff behind, come join us and have some fun instead." I appreciate your plea for unity but alas I also know it's a difficult goal to actually reach. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

If I may, I thought I'd take a shot at handling your question. The Bible examples of the church's handling problem really is the best way. When a brother notices a serious "wrinkle" in his brother's or sister's spiritual life, then he/she should approach that person in love and genuine concern for their soul as cited in Matt 18:15-16. Then you know the procedure from there, it gets elevated eventually to the church leadership, preferbly the elders. The most difficult and vital ingredient in this process MUST be the genuine Agape type love and fellowship that must exist between the erring christian and this group of christians. If that love and fellowship doesn't really mean that much either of those parties in this process, then the whole practice of this discipline process breaks down and doesn't work very well. But ultimately it is the responsibility of the eldership of that local congregation to watch out for that group of christians. An eldership has some responsibilities to be kind and INFORM another congregation of a brother that they have disciplined and excluded from the fellowship BUT again ultimately the eldership of that other congregation has its own responsibility to its congregation so we see how important it is to have and maintain elders. That's one of the reasons for so much disunity and lack of growth in the Lord's church in America today is our tendancy to no longer follow the examples and commands as laid out in God's Word. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

300 | speaking in tongue | 1 Cor 12:13 | Country Girl | 125341
Mr. EdB has posted an excellent explanation of spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues but it seems to me there's just one thing missing. Correct me if I'm mistaken as I might be but isn't the following true? There's not one single instance in the NT other than in Acts 2 with the establishment of the church and Acts 10 with Cornelius, where people in the NT received this miraculous powers ONLY with the laying on of hands by the Apostles? As a matter of fact, Acts 8 makes this very plain. There, people were baptized and became christians and then only after the laying on of hands by the Apostles did they received these kinds of miraculous powers. The baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and 10 was done for very specific reasons, 1) to establish the church and 2) to endorse the sharing of this Gospel message with Gentiles as well as Jews, respectively. Since we have no more living Apostles amongst us, it's difficult to believe in the modern manifestation of miracles from common men and women, even christians in today's world. Again, I may be mistaken, if so please feel free to correct me. Blessings to you. Country Girl |
