241 | Diff. btw receiving and being filled | Luke 11:13 | Ray | 147821
Hi keruxib 12, The question is concerned with the filling of the Holy Spirit, but what I would have you consider is a lower case "holy spirit". The Greek does not have a distinction of lower and upper case, so the Scriptures do not give us a clear understanding. I would say that the Scriptures are telling us to be filled with the holy spirit. I would say that the Scriptures are telling us to be washed by the word, filled with the word, preaching the word. The spirit that we are to be filled with are the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Ephesians 5:16. When the word of Christ richly dwells within us we teach and admonish one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Colossians 3:16. We give thanks for all things in the name of our Lord/ Jesus Christ; Ephesians 5:20. We give thanks through Him/ to God the Father. Colossians 3:17. 1) Ephesians 3:10, "trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord." [Marginal note, Lit. proving what]. Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,..." 242 | The cross of Christ? | 2 Cor 4:10 | Ray | 147803
Hi Mommapbs, Romans 8:37, "But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through (Him) who loved us." 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if any man is in (Christ), he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold new things have come." From the heart, Ray |

243 | Church sound system "way too loud" | 1 Cor 13:1 | Ray | 147773
Hi Kalos, Perhaps wearing the foam ear plugs until he can get the headphones on that the church supplies, would be a solution. However, sometimes disabilities do affect the ways that we can participate in activities. Perhaps he will have to accept the situation and be content with tapes of the services. He could combine the tapes with a weekly Bible study at the church in a quieter and smaller assembly of believers. From the heart, Ray |

244 | Filled with the Holy Spirit or not? | 1 Tim 2:12 | Ray | 147772
Hi Doc, You wrote, "People salvificly come to the Lord but are not yet aware of all the benefits that accrue to such a thing." Would you care to start a new thread with a question on Ephesians 1:13? I think that we are sealed in Him with the holy spirit which is given as a pledge of our inheritance. I would have you consider a lower case "holy spirit" for Acts 19:2 as well. If you want to discuss either Ephesians or Acts, let me know. I think that this thread is pretty long. From the heart, Ray |

245 | What purpose does The Holy Spirit serve? | Luke 11:13 | Ray | 147770
Hi tj57h@cs.com, Tim, Many in this thread are speaking of the Holy Spirit as an "it" and a helper. I would say that the Holy Spirit is a Person and the holy spirit is an it. I see the Holy Spirit as the Giver and the holy spirit as the gift. So for Luke 11:13 when it speaks of good gifts I believe that it speaks of gifts of holy spirit. The Father in heaven (who is Spirit) will give good gifts to those who ask Him. I am not saying that the Son and Holy Spirit are not Gifts. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 4:10, "Jesus answered and said to her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and who it [He] is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." John 14:16, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever." Those Scriptures speak of the Son and the Spirit as Gifts. But I am asking people to consider the possibility of the gift of the holy spirit. John 3:6, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, but that which is born of the *spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' [Or, from above]." 246 | Pattern of words? | Luke 11:13 | Ray | 147765
Hi keruxib 12, You wrote, "the pattern is the same - allowing the Word of God richly dwell in us fills us with His Holy Spirit". You capitalized "Word" and "Holy Spirit". Is the pattern the same or can you recognize the pattern if I write, "the pattern is the same - allowing the word of God richly dwell in us fills us with His holy spirit." Colossians 3:16, "Let the word [sic] of Christ richly dwell within you,..." 1) Compare Ephesians 5:21 "fear of Christ" and "as to the Lord" with Colossians 3:22, "fearing the Lord" and "as for the Lord". Is there a pattern of words? From the heart, Ray |

247 | Didn't Jesus just become sinless? | 2 Cor 5:21 | Ray | 147699
Hi Tim, Since He was sinless, we know that He is the Son of God. I go with the NKJ for Hebrews 4:14 and 15 but with the addition of " One who". Hebrews 4:14, NKJ, "Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but [One who] was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." 248 | Who or what is the (s)Spirit? | John 3:34 | Ray | 147697
Hi Searcher, I am glad that others have told you that we do not use God. But I think that it is important to note also that God does not "use" us either in the sense of controlling us. The triune God leads us and teaches us, but He does not control us. As far as my question is concerned, that is, how many nouns and pronouns are in John 3:34; it is important to look at the sixth possible occurance (KJ, unto him). So the question now is, does God give the Spirit unto Him or to us? And in the context of verse 34a, who or what is the Spirit? From the heart, Ray |

249 | Who or what is the (s)Spirit? | John 3:34 | Ray | 147607
Hi Searcher, Good morning to you. I surmise that your answer to my question would be 6. I hear you saying that God the Father gave the Holy Spirit to Jesus. My question then would be "How much of the Holy Spirit did God give to the Son?" The NKJ says that "God does not give the Spirit by measure." The marginal note in my NASB says [Lit, for He does not give the Spirit by measure]. The second question would revolve around who is doing the giving. The NASB reads, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure." Therefore the "He" is talking about "the One whom God has sent" and also about "God who gives the Spirit without measure." So is Jesus (who is God) giving the Spirit without measure? If it is Jesus that is doing the giving, who is He giving to? Himself? KJ, "for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him." From the heart, Ray |

250 | Please explain 1 Cor 4:18-21. | 1 Cor 13:1 | Ray | 147583
Hi Darling 1, Certainly we can see the power of love in 1 Corinthians and especially in chapter thirteen. But I see in 1 Corinthians 4:31 Paul coming to them in love but also "a spirit of gentleness." This spirit revolved around the word(s) preached. The power, the spiritual power, was in the words. 1 Corinthians 1:18 spoke of the word of the cross and the power of God. 1 Cor 2:4 spoke of the preaching being done not in words of wisdom of men, but in power of God. To my mind, these passages speak of the demonstration of the Spirit and of power (2:4) but also the demonstration of love and a spirit (of gentleness, 1 Cor 4:21). 1 Corinthians 4:20, "For the kingdom of (God) does not consist in words [Lit. word], but in power. 1 Corinthians 2:9, "but just as it is written, 'Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love (Him).'" Paul speaks in the words taught by the Holy Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. These words and spiritual mysteries were revealed to us also by God through the Spirit or through His spirit (words), depending on how you interpret 1 Corinthians 2:10. Paul comes to them with a spirit of gentleness and that is the spirit that we have received also. Oh, that we might know the things (the words) freely given to us by God, and to know their power. You referenced Romans 5:3-5. What would you say to this interpretation of verse five? "and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the *holy *spirit [the words] which were given to us." That is my interpretation for your consideration. From the heart, Ray |

Reference #124161. John 3:34, KJ, "For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him." 253 | "He erased the certificate of debt" | Col 2:14 | Ray | 147289
Hi mark d seyler, I don't think that the verses (Colossians 2:14 and Ephesians 2:15) are perfect matches although I think that the ordinances spoken of in both are the same thing. In comparing the verses and the passages in context, I find it hard to put into words the Persons involved. That is the focus that I would have in a study, looking at Jesus rather than the Law. 1) Is Colossians 2:14 speaking of God nailing Himself on the cross or nailing the certificate of debt on the cross along with Himself? Is Ephesians 2:16 talking about the cross or Himself as having put to death the enmity (that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances)? 2) I see Colossians 2:15 and Romans 8:2 as good matches as looking to the law of the Spirit and how He had disarmed the rulers and the authorities. 3) I see Colossians 2:20 and Romans 8:3 as good matches in that we have died with Christ and He has condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us. 254 | Corinthians vs. Isaiah | 1 Cor 2:9 | Ray | 146996
Hi terrib, Another comparison verse for 1 Cor 2:9 might be Isaiah 6:9. Here Isaiah volunteers to go to the people and the (triune) God said, "Go and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand. 10 Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Lest they see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed." However, these things are revealed through the Spirit, or through His Spirit. The contrast between Isaiah who was sent and the Lord of glory who was sent is seen. Jesus spoke in parables and hidden wisdom these spiritual things and it is necessary to come to Him to be healed. Matthew 13:13, "Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, 'You will keep on hearing, but will not understand; And you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; 15 For the heart of this people has become dull, And with their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes Lest they should see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And **I should heal them.' 16 "But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 For truly I say to you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it." 255 | NKJ, NASB, and varied manuscripts. | 1 Cor 2:10 | Ray | 146992
Hi terrib, 1 Corinthians 2:10 has been discussed by believers through the ages. The varied manuscripts are proof of this to my mind. The NU text does not include the word "His", thus the NASB is translated "revealed them through the Spirit" rather than the NKJ "His Spirit". The idea of desiring one of the words to be deleted, suggests to me that one of the words of Spirit should be lower case. I believe that there should be four words of Deity for the verse. I see the choices as being: "For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." (NASB) "For to us God revealed them through His Spirit; for the *spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." (NKJ and a lower case spirit for the second clause) "For to us God revealed them through His spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." Each of those choices have four words of Deity in them. 1 Corinthians 2:4, "And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit, and of power, 5 so that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God." 256 | "Law" is a Metaphor? | Rom 7:23 | Ray | 146955
Hi Doc Trinsograce, I see the idea of an implied comparison, but I don't know if "metaphor" would be the proper word. Romans 7:22 and 8:10 are good comparison verses to my mind. Here we have the idea of the law of God in the inner man as being equated or compared with having Christ in you. From the heart, Ray |

257 | NKJ, NASB, and varied manuscripts. | 1 Cor 2:10 | Ray | 146953
Hi terrib, The first clause of 1 Cor 2:10 speaks of the things revealed, and the second talks of the things searched. So I would not say that they should both be necessarily capitalized. I again reference #146900 and the discussion there. The thoughts of God are known by the Spirit of God; He does not have to search for them. However, our spirit searches all things; for our spirit wants to know the things that are freely given to us by God. When we know those things, having been taught by the Holy Spirit, we have wisdom from God. We have received the spirit and words of the hidden wisdom which God predestined. That is why I would interpret verse 12 with a lower case "spirit" also. 1 Cor 2:12, "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the *spirit which is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God." 258 | Law v Faith. Are Jews Condemened? | Leviticus | Ray | 146923

259 | NKJ, NASB, and varied manuscripts. | 1 Cor 2:10 | Ray | 146920
The post of reference for this question is EdB's #146900. We have been discussing 1 Cor 2:10 with the expectation of it having four words of Deity in it. He has suggested, and I think with merit, this reading of the verse. "For to us God revealed them through His Spirit; for the *spirit searches all things, even the depths of God." We welcome comments. From the heart, Ray |

260 | Law v Faith. Are Jews Condemened? | Leviticus | Ray | 146905
Hi EdB, I see your thought as an excellent one. The Spirit doesn't need to search the depths of God for the Spirit of God knows the thoughts of God. However, the spirit searches all things, even the spirit that is in a man, for who knows a man's thoughts except the spirit of the man? 1) Continuing on to verse 12, here is my interpretation using capitalization. "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the *spirit which is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God." Thanks Ed. From the heart, Ray |
