221 | Have you ever read a book by a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 131488
Hello Dalcent, You answered to me by mistake, but I would like to respond. What you state concerning the creedal confession is correct. I agree with it. However in application (as stated in the catechism) there is almost no agreement. For instance, the catechism states: 1116 Sacraments are "powers that come forth" from the Body of Christ, [Cf. Lk 5:17; 6:19; 8:46] which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are "the masterworks of God" in the new and everlasting covenant. This is simply a misuse of Scripture. The sacraments have no derived power. It sounds good, but the Bible never hints at this. And I could easily give other examples. Steve |

222 | They were not born again at time of marr | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 131506
Hello moey, It doesn't matter. They are legally married whether it's performed in Catholic church or a root cellar. Or whether it's performed by a priest, judge, or ship's captain. There simply is no need to renew vows in order to make it a "Christian" marriage. Steve |

223 | Have you ever read a book by a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 131509
Hello Emmaus, 1. Sheer numbers does not constitute correctness. 2. I did not say you and Dalcent were not Christians. I said the catechism misused the Bible. Steve |

224 | should a catholic marraige be sanctified | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 131510
Hello Glory Bound, "Likewise an American marriage is when an American man marries an American women, and so on. Is this what you are stating?" That's exactly what I was saying. Steve |

225 | Have you ever read a book by a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 131511
Hello Dalcent, Again, I don't disagree with your statements. I disagree with how the catechism misuses the Bible. Steve |

Hello Dalcent, A metaphor. Steve |

227 | Will we know our loved ones in heaven? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 133118
Hello Sometimes Thomas, There are no verses that tell us whether or not we will know our loved ones in heaven. However, it could be assumed from such passages as Rev 6:9-11 where they were asking about avenging their deaths. This shows that they know what is going on and understand all that is happening. So I would say that we will know others whether loved ones or not. Steve |

228 | who named the angels | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 133438
Hello sheebie, The only answer is that God named them. Since he named the stars (Isaiah 40:26), it seems logical he named the angels. Steve |

229 | what are some study methods? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 133440
Hello skylight, There are many different methods--inductive, deductive, biographical, devotional, etc. The best method is the one that gets you to study. My personal preference is the inductive method. Kay Arthur has written some good material on this. Steve |

230 | bread for Lord's Supper | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 133744
Hello kingpaper11, Unleavened bread is simple bread without yeast. I've had unleavened bread made from plain white flour and some from barley flour. In our church we don't bother with unleavened bread since there is no requirement for it. Steve |

Hello KoldTrain, There is no significance to the number 222 in the Bible. Steve |

232 | ... | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 135827
Hello Reighnskye, 1 Cor 6:1-8 (ESV) When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? [2] Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? [3] Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! [4] So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? [5] I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, [6] but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? [7] To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? [8] But you yourselves wrong and defraud—even your own brothers! Hello wsisel, Jesus didn't have grandchildren, because he didn't have children. Steve |

234 | man's tradition | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 136721
Hello Al, I think you misunderstand how Paul used the word "tradition". The word means to transmit or transfer behavior or lifestyle or body of knowledge to others. I think we can agree here. So in that regard, Paul is insisting that others follow apostolic teaching as delivered and apply that in the local churches. What it does not say is that we are allowed to make new traditions in the church. The truth of the one holy apostolic and catholic church has largely (and sadly) been ignored by God's people. Steve |

235 | How do you ordain someone? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 136790
Hello FreeSpiritFaith, According to New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge: "According to Acts 6:6; 13:3, the appointment to office in the church is conferred by prayer and the laying on of hands, which here again is nothing more than a natural symbol for the transmission of the power of the Holy Spirit necessary to their exercise...Paul warns [Timothy] (1 Tim 5:22) to lay hands suddenly on no man." |

236 | How do you ordain someone? | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 136901
Hello Al, This is an excellent post. I agree with most of it. If your idea or comprehension of apostolic succession is the faithful passing of sound doctrine from one generation to the next, then I wholeheartedly agree with you. My problem is that many things have been added as doctrine that simply are not in Scripture. BTW, I have Kelly's book but haven't had a chance to read it yet. Steve |

237 | man's tradition | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 136984
Hello Jun, Peter alone received the keys, and did his work of unlocking the kingdom to Jews (Acts 2) and Gentiles (Acts 10). That part of his work was then completed. Peter was never given authority to rule the church. Isaiah 22:22 and Rev 3:7 point to the Lord Jesus Christ alone, not a designate or apostle. Steve |

238 | what does it mean to fast | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 137418
Hello nae-nae 04, Fasting is going without food. It was used in the Bible to afflict oneself with the idea of concentrating on or giving yourself to spiritual matters. Steve |
||||||
239 | what does it mean to fast | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 137428
Hello Mike I will disagree because your description sounds more like deprivation (general term) of which fasting is a specific type. And my answer was based on what can be found in the canonical text. Your application is not without merit. Paul told us that he brought his body into subjection in order to serve Christ better. This can be done in several ways. Steve |
||||||
240 | what does it mean to fast | Bible general Archive 2 | srbaegon | 137451
Hello DocTrinsograce, Like I told Mike, when the word "fasting" is used, it's speaking of food. I'd say this was one of those other deprivations I had mentioned. Steve |
