1 | Defend the Offender-Attack the Offended? | Bible general | srbaegon | 241666
Hello, Has someone truly caused you offense, or are you feeling the sting of sharp correction? Christians are called to restrict the gifts in others when the use of that gift is unseemly. The apostle Paul sharply corrected the believers in Corinth for the way they conducted themselves according to their gifts: there was chaos that needed to be set in order. Steve |

Hello voicebioneva, The use of last names is a new convention in the history of mankind. In the ancient world, people were known according to their father (James the son of Alphaeus), trade (Simon the tanner), locale (Simon of Cyrene), etc. Steve |

12 | ok to put someone to death? | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 197099
Hello ssongssu, Yes, there are times when someone should be put to death. God gave very specific laws on when this was permissible. Those found in the Mosaic Law (adultery, unruly child, etc.) are no longer enforced as we are not under that covenantal law, however there is one (murder) that is enforced because it precedes Moses: Gen 9:5-6 (ESV) And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. Steve |

14 | i dont get your point please write far m | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 199097
Hello mightilycalled, I would like to bring a gentle warning based on church history. About A.D. 200 and after, men of Alexandria, such as Clement and especially his top student Origen, were well-known for continually searching out the Scriptures for what you term "parallel truth reservoirs." In the end, Origen was led into grave error. My point is that a person must be careful against finding treasures that are not really in Scripture. Steve |

17 | Predistination and God | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 202056
Hello Sandra, Perhaps this also will help you. This word that is translated predestined (also foreordained or predetermined) at its simplest means that God has determined at some point in the past that something will happen--without fail or change. For instance, Scripture says about Christ's crucifixion that “for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place” (Acts 4:27-28). The atoning death of Jesus on the cross was going to happen. That was the entire plan for his coming to earth. This also means that God has determined that something would happen concerning us: A. The message of the gospel is called a “secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory” (1 Cor. 2:7). The unfathomable wisdom of God planned redemption for us and our glory. B. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. (Romans 8:29-30) Those God foreknew (knew intimately and personally beforehand) he had established that these would be conformed to his Son. And for this to take place he called us, justified us, and glorified us (or better said, will glorify us; it hasn't happened yet, but it will). C. As believers we receive two things that, as part of God's eternal plan, should be free given—an adoption and an inheritance: * He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. (Eph 1:5-6) * In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:11-12) I hope this helps. We have so much that was planned in ages past (even before the foundation of the world) for the redemption of man and the individual benefit of each believer. All this for his own glory and that we might glorify him. Steve |

Hello F.o.o.t.man, Since pberardi has not posted since the posting you answered, maybe I can help. In view of Paul's commendation to the church in Corinth that singleness can be viewed as a gift, I would not require an elder to marry. The stipulation of one woman is to prevent both polygamy and easy divorce. Steve |

20 | Know any scriptures for Depression? | Bible general Archive 4 | srbaegon | 204006
Hello Tamara, There are some examples of depressed people in Scripture and how their need was addressed. Each person was ministered to according to their need, so that their thinking and conduct could be righted. 1. Elijah went through a series of highs and lows so that he wanted to die (1 Kings 19:4). God sent him food, met him in the "sound of a low whisper" (ESV translation), and reassured the prophet that he did not stand alone. 2. Job had his children and possessions destroyed followed by a disease-racked body and "comfort" of thoughtless friends. Job was sure it would have been better to not be born, though he would have assurance before his friends of standing innocent before God. God had to remind Job who was sovereign over all which caused the self-pity to end (Job 42:1-6). 3. Naomi had her husband and sons taken in death. Grieving, she also tried to send both daughters-in-law away though Ruth refused. God used Ruth's faithfulness to restore Naomi's joy through the child born (Ruth 4:17). In conclusion, there is no simple answer but to point the people to Christ and his assurance. Steve |
