21 | can you explain a little more? thanks | Rom 8:13 | leonore | 121114
Dear Zsuzsi, Thank you for giving me so much more to think about and also for the advice about prayer. When I first became a Christian in October I would pray to understand the things I was reading and lately I have forgotten to do so. Thanks for the reminder and the additional scriptures. For me it is so exciting, like putting pieces of a puzzle together. But, this is the most important knowledge that we could ever attain. Thanks again. Leonore
22 | Does sin use the law or benefit from it? | Rom 7:5 | leonore | 121060
Thank you so much for clearing this up for me. You also helped me with some other questions I had or had been thinking about. I had a hard time understanding v.13 but the translation you have made it much easier. Also what you said about no one being able to look at the demands of the law and then their own lives can say that we don't deserve condemnation. I was just thinking last night about what I would do if I had to stand before God without Christ's atonement. There would be nothing I could say to explain away my sins. I would be guilty and deserving of condemnation. Thanks so much for talking so clearly and giving scriptures on things I am barely beginning to understand!
23 | can you explain a little more? thanks | Rom 8:13 | leonore | 121038
Thank you very much for these scriptures. I am going to take the time to read them thoroughly.I really appreciate the information you have given me. I'm having a hard time seeing the difference, as you said, with the works of the law and the changes that are expected from accepting Christ. The thing is it seems like the changes that are expected from accepting Christ are that you will be following a lot of the law,(do not lie, kill, steal, etc...) and if you're not than you're not really saved? It almost seems like a contradiction to say being saved is a free gift but, we have to be active participants. I promise I'm not trying to argue, I'm just really trying to get this straight in my own head. I have been a Christian since October, and I am doing my best to understand things. I appreciate so much you taking the time to explain things and giving me more to think about. I feel bad for not completely understanding.
24 | Thank you! Just need to understand littl | Rom 7:13 | leonore | 121036
Thank you very much. Your note helped me to understand this passage more clearly. I still have a couple of questions, I understand how the law causes us to know what sin is. I don't really understand how sin appropriates the law. I also still don't understand the part of the scripture that says "by effecting my death through that which is good". I'm sorry to be so insistant on understanding these phrases but, I've been studying Romans for a couple months now. It's the first book I've studied and I keep in mind 2 Timothy 3:16 when it says that "all scripture is inspired by God" so I try to understand as much of it as I can. Thank you!
25 | need help understanding this scripture | Rom 7:13 | leonore | 121031
What does it mean here by "Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good"? This seems very complicated and I would appreciate any input. Thank you!
26 | Does sin use the law or benefit from it? | Rom 7:5 | leonore | 121030
This scripture and also verse 8 are confusing to me. How are sinful passions aroused by the law? and in verse 8 how does sin take opportunity through the commandment? Thank you!
27 | meaning of according to the flesh? | Rom 8:13 | leonore | 121029
What does it mean to live according to the flesh? Does this scripture mean that if we continue to sin or repeat the same sin over and over we will die? This scripture confused me because it seems to be saying that works have an affect on whether we have eternal life or not. Forgive me if I am misunderstanding the scripture. I am a fairly new Christian and sometimes it's hard for me to understand. Thank you!

34 | The MacArthur study Bible | Col 2:2 | leonore | 114940
Thank you EdB. I am going to have to take a few days to go over all this information! I feel overwhelmed but, in a good way. There is so much to learn! Now that I found out how much there is I can't stop! I read at night with a flashlight so as not to keep my husband awake! I appreciate this site so much, my dad had patiently urged me to go to church my whole adult life, he prayed for me constantly and gave me advice. But, I'm so sorry to say that I didn't come to Christ until a year after he passed away.I miss him so much and I wish that I could have him here to ask all my questions. But, I think God helped me to find this site because here I have found people with the same spirit as my father. We all remember him sitting at the kitchen table with his bible open and reference books so piled up that my mother had to get another table to eat at! Sorry for the personal info but, when you said that Macarthur was calvinistic it reminded me of my dad because he had said something about that before, though, I don't know what calvinistic means.:)
35 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | leonore | 114939
I haven't really thought about the role of the church yet but, after reflecting on what you wrote it does seem right and beautiful that the church should be Christ's instrument here on earth. It is the means by which we do learn about him and I also see how it is right that the church would serve to unite people because it is when we realize how much God loves us that we begin to look at others and feel a strong love for them. This was very hard for me to understand,I am having to learn so many new words and concepts, I hope I understood what you are trying to explain which I think is this,(please let me know if I'm wrong)that the mystery of Christ is salvation and we learn about it through the church.

Thank you, it does. I've read quite a few posts that mention The MacArthur Study Bible. One of them mentioned that it was from a certain denomination, do you know what they were talking about? By the answers I have read it seems like a very good study aid. thanks again! |

38 | definition of "atonement" and "reconcili | Rom 3:25 | leonore | 114855
I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I think this is basic knowledge but, I really don't have a full understanding. Could someone please give me a definition of what atonement means? Does it mean something like payment for our sins? Does reconciliation mean to be able to have a relationship with God, to be able to draw near to him? (2 questions) Thank you!
39 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | leonore | 114852
You've given me a lot of reading to do. thank you very much! I do think that this will help me. It already helped to read where you told me that it doesn't necessarily mean it's a secret that is being withheld but of one to be published. I think I also understand that this means that although we understand some of the mystery at this time, there is even more to be revealed. Is that right?
