The Lord has given us biblical scholars to help us understand the Bible. "Test all things; hold to what is good" I Thess.5:21. |

22 | "Catch Twenty-two?" | Gal 5:16 | JonnyRay49423 | 4120
In Second Corinthians we read in chapter 3 verse 3 we read "clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart"-this verse points to the Old Testment passages where God would in the Messianic Age write His law upon the hearts of His covenant people-if you turn to chapter 8 of the Epistle to the Hebrews the apostle Paul quotes the OT passage where God promised He would write His laws on the hearts of His chosen people "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their god, and they shall be My people" Hebrews 8:11. To walk in the Spirit is to walk according the Law of Christ. The Holy Spirit has written God's laws on our hearts. As we grow spiritually we come to know and love the will of God. We can only walk in the ways of the Lord as we live in the Scriptures-sit under the preaching of the Scriptures-study the Scriptures-in time the Scriptures become a living thing in us-we are to have the Scriptures dwelling in us richly-we become aware how we are to walk in order to stay in constant fellowship with God-we know the way we are to walk if we are to have our hearts open to the love of God-our desires keep us fixed on the Lord-we find our hearts burning with love for the Lord that is seen in our walk.
23 | How do we do the How? | Gal 5:16 | JonnyRay49423 | 4015
If one is walking in the Spirit he will be the bearing the fruit of the Spirit as set forth in Gal.5:22-23. How does one walk in the Spirit? By walking in the light of the Law of Christ-which is that we are to love God and our neighbor. I have in my library Puritan treatises on what it means to walk with God-if you want some titles e-mail me. |

It is impossible to examine all the Scriptures you quoted in your theology of tongues. We both know that there are books by scholars on both sides of the issue-I have books in my library by those who hold to speaking in tongues-they can quote the Scriptures to defend their position-I also have books by those who find no biblical support for speaking in tongues. Maybe we should shift the focus-Ask the question of why the Holy Spirit has given spiritual gifts to us-Christians? Maybe what we should be doing is using our spiritual gifts to help other believers in their walk with God. Not think one spiritual gift is better than another-now I do see the gift of proclaiming the teachings of the Bible to be the best gift-but we need all the gifts of the Spirit-I personally see tongues to be not important-but that is my personal conviction-I know there are Christians who disagree with me-in the end we need to love another and serve the Lord-make sure the Lord is the focus and not ourselves. |

I wrote that sentence in a form of a question "If one was to preach from Genesis to Revelation would he find "tongues" to be super important or the Lord Jesus Christ?" The answer would be not tongues but the Lord Jesus Christ. It is also true one would not find the length of hair of women to be a major doctrine-but the role of women is important in the Scriptures-it all goes back to creation account in Genesis-Eve was not given dominion over Adam-male headship goes back to creation-I see this teaching to be throughout the Bible-so the status of women in the created order/Church is important-more important than tongues or the length of ones hair. When it comes to the length of hair-male or female-one must follow Christian liberty-not fall into legalism-or false ideas of Christian spirituality.

The major book that helped me is titled "A Theology of the Holy Spirit:The Pentecostal Experience and the New Testament Witness" by Frederick Dale Bruner-I also recommend these books on the Holy Spirit-John Owen The Holy Spirit two volumes (a Puritan work)-Abraham Kuyper "The Work of The Holy Spirit"-C.R. Vaughan "The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit"-George Smeaton "The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit"-"The Office And Work Of The Holy Spirit" by James Buchanan. I have studied for years Pentecostalism/Theology-feel free to ask me questions-maybe e-mail me privately-would love the Christian fellowship-before I close check out B.B. Warfield's two volumes titled Perfectionism. |

27 | OT church? | Acts 2:17 | JonnyRay49423 | 3981
The church is both visible and invisible. The Visible Church is made up all the elect from the beginning of the church in Genesis to the final gathering the elect described in Revelation. There is one church-one people of God made up of Jew and Gentitle (Ephesians 2:14-22). The Invisible Church is the church in heaven-the glorified saints. The Church is not the mystery revealed to the apostle Paul. The mystery is how God would bring together in one body Jew and Gentile through the death cross work of the Messiah. If we hold that there is a Jewish church and a Gentile church we bring confusion into the work of God. There is One Plan of God not one plan for Jews and one plan for non-Jews. |

I confess I did not quote any verses to back of what I wrote concerning your questions. I gave you my opinion for what it is worth. Now how to defend my opinions with verses from the Bible. I do not have any new verses to use to back up my opinions. In this StudyBible Forum I see the same questions being asked all the time especially the women issue and tongues. I have nothing else to add to the debate except my opinion-the Bible verses setting forth what the Bible teaches about the role of women in the local church have been quoted several times in the StudyBible Forum. When it comes to the phenomenon of what is described by Pentecostals as speaking in tongues I can only offer my opinions. Among Christians we have Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals. I personally see no value spiritually in speaking in gibberish. I can not explain to you how I came to speak in tongues if I now believe it to be unbiblical. I have some biblically based arguements but I can not fulfill that task in this small white box-I could recommend some books that helped me-but in the end we must go by the plain teachings of the Bible. The last week I have been doing a study of First Corinthians-I am only on chapter 3-but I do see that the apostle Paul's main desire was to preach Christ crucified and not anything else-my opinion is that as Christians we will only mature spiritually under the preaching of the Bible-textual preaching-if one was to preach from Genesis to Revelations would one find "tongues" to be super important or the Lord Jesus Christ? The focus of Scripture is the Lord-we must get our eyes off ourselves and focus them on the Lord Jesus Christ.
29 | 1Corinthians questions: Gifts and women | 1 Corinthians | JonnyRay49423 | 3867
I am not a Pentecostal Christian, but I have spoken in tongues(?). When I was a new Christian over 30 years ago I had an experience in which I spoke in tongues. I have not spoken in tongues for the last 25 years. I came to see that what was going on in the New Testament Church was not to continue throughout Church history. I see NT tongues to be known languages, not the speech of angels. I could go on all day, but I will be short and to the point. I see tongues as a religious experience that anyone can undergo. I do not see speaking in tongues as evidence one is a Christian. I do not see tongues to be essential to the Christian life. What we should be concern about is not religious experiences, but a holy life-a close relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to stop looking inside-stop seeking feelings-raptures-but we need to focus our spiritual eyes on the Lord-we need to lose sight of ourselves and seek to conform ourselves to the character of Christ. Christians should attend churches where the Preaching and Teaching of the Bible is the focus Not religious experiences. In our church the sermons last from 45 minutes to 50 minutes. We sing the Psalms and read the Scriptures. Worship should be God centered and not feelings-centered (man-centered). The Bible clearly teaches women are to be silent during Sunday worship services-preachers are to be males not females. Now I see nothing wrong for women to share their thoughts during a Wednesday Night Bible study or other meetings outside the Sunday preaching services. When I go to church what I want to hear is not a bunch of people speaking in tongues but the Word of God-I want to hear the glories of Christ Jesus set forth-I want the Cross of Christ to be lifted up before lost sinners-I want to hear the Gospel of God expounded in alls divine power and beauty. |

30 | How can we influence who is saved? | 1 Pet 2:9 | JonnyRay49423 | 3579
It is true God has elected some to salvation and left others to perish in their sin-but we not forget that God uses the preaching of the Gospel to elect sinners unto Himself-we must hold together divine sovereignty and human responsiblity. We must freely offer salvation to all mankind sinners.
31 | Question Number Two? | Matt 24:44 | JonnyRay49423 | 3530
I must confess I do not believe the Bible teaches "rapture-tribulation-end time" eschatology-so I am not effected by these ideas. I do not know how these ideas shape ones Christian spirituality-prepare one for the Second Coming?
32 | God can use woman in the ministry? | Gal 3:28 | JonnyRay49423 | 3518
Galatians 3:28 in its context has nothing to do with the pastoral ministry. Gal.3:28 should be seen in its context-the apostle Paul states that all those in Christ are now a member of the new people of God "Abraham's seed" "there is neither Jew nor Greek"-we find this same truth in Ephesians 2:14-22.

34 | Can we know when? | Matt 24:44 | JonnyRay49423 | 3515
We should be ready to meet the Lord every day. "if anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!" 1 Cor.16:22 "Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day, and not me only but also to all who have loved His appearing" 2 Tim.4:8 |

35 | Following Moses' Laws | Matt 8:4 | JonnyRay49423 | 3238
We must recognize that before the death of Christ the Old Covenant or the Mosaic Covenant was still in operation-therefore the Jews were still under OT Torah-but after the Cross Death of Jesus a New Covenant was instituted that replaced the Old Covenant-read the Epistle to the Hebrews-we are not to observe OT Torah-for further study read the book "The Shadow of Christ In The Law Of Moses" by Vern Poythress.
36 | Please consider Jn 3:5 water and Spirit | 1 Pet 3:21 | JonnyRay49423 | 3189
I was baptized when I was a new Christian over 30 years ago. When the Lord saved me I was regenerated by the Holy Spirit and have ever since lived my Christian life in the power of the Holy Spirit. I do not see any where in Scripture "second blessing" theology-there is not such thing as a baptism of the Spirit after conversion. I do believe in fresh fillings of the Spirit, but those fillings have nothing to do with what is called "speaking in tongues"-the Holy Spirit lives in the Christian and is the cause of all his spiritual growth etc. . .
37 | Story life of Ezekial for 9 years old | Ezekiel | JonnyRay49423 | 3154
When our children were little we read to them from a three volume work titled "The Bible History-Told to Our Children" by John Vreugdenhil printed by the Netherland Reformed Congregations of America-in volume 2 is a story about the Prophet Ezekiel
38 | Does the word majority indicate voting? | 2 Cor 2:6 | JonnyRay49423 | 3152
All I can see in this verse is that the majority of Christians in the Corinthian church had approved of the reproof-maybe there had been a small minority which had sided with the offender or had wanted sterner measures-I do not see in this verse that the church "voted" to bring church discipline against the offending brother. |

40 | Verse predicted Alexdr-theGreat victory? | Daniel | JonnyRay49423 | 3148
Alexander the Great never converted to Christianity. Maybe you are thinking about one of the rulers in the Book of Daniel? Here is a quote from a Bible Encyclopediea on Tyre "Ezekiel's prophecy (Ez.26:1-28:19; 29:18-20) is significant for several reasons. First, Ezekiel prophesied that Tyre would be destroyed so throughly that it would be like "the top of a rock" and a place for the "spreading of nets" (26:4,5). While this prophecy was ultimately fufilled, the final destruction of Tyre did not come for almost 1900 years (AD 1291), though it was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar for 13 years (587-574 BC), and conquered by Alexander the Great in 332 BC after a 7-month siege . . ."
