21 | Does God show mercy if we sin purposely? | 1 Tim 1:13 | Diomede | 153921
This verse seems to say that Paul was shown mercy because he didn't realise what he was doing. So then if he had of sinned knowingly, would he not have been shown mercy?
22 | Does God give faith? | 1 Tim 1:14 | Diomede | 153985
How are faith and love found in Christ? Its easier to see how love is found in Christ as God is love, but I always thought of faith as the part I have to play. That is, even though I don't fully understand I still believe and so that is my faith, a deliberate decision on my part. So is this saying that God will give me faith, or that God should be the centre of my faith? Different translations put it slightly differently and they are not making it clearer to me. Also, does God give more grace to those who have sinned more, or is sin, sin no matter how big or small, so his grace is the same, abundantly poured out for us all? |

23 | Thanks! What about verse 17? | 1 Tim 1:14 | Diomede | 154031
Thank you seacher 56 for your answer, that Hebrews verse puts faith in a way I've never thought about it before. Thanks too to those others who have answered my previous questions. I've only recently joined this forum, and I just think its so cool that I can put in something thats puzzling me before I go to bed in New Zealand, and by the time I wake up someone has always taken the time to share their thoughts and help me find the answers I'm looking for. A further question on my Timothy study: verse 17 seems to come out of nowhere. Why do you think he puts it there and how does it connect with the previous verses? |

24 | who added the verse numbers? | 1 Tim 1:14 | Diomede | 154192
Interesting point about the verses, chapters etc being added later. Do you (or does some one else out there) know when this happened and how they decided where it should be broken up?
25 | Who is the overseer today? | 1 Tim 3:1 | Diomede | 156507
What is todays equivilent in church structure to the office of overseer or bishop? Are these verses intended for Pastors?
26 | What was the job of a prophetess? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Diomede | 156570
As prophetesses did Huldah and Anna have authority over men? What did being a prophetess mean - did it make them church leaders?
27 | Does 1 Tim 5 v 23 contradict this? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Diomede | 159086
I believe the word temperate is from the Greek word nephalios, which means abstaining from alcohol. I had taken this to mean that overseers were not to drink alcohol at all. However in 1 Timothy 5 v 23 Paul tells Timothy to drink a little wine for health reasons. Is this contradictory?
28 | Can an overseer drink? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Diomede | 159114
Thank you Kalos for your very comprehensive answer? I agree that the Bible doesn't require the general public to completely abstain, just not to use it in excess. But does this verse suggest that because of the example and influence of an overseer, there is a higher standard set for him? Thanks |

29 | What does 1 Timothy 3 v 4 mean? | 1 Tim 3:4 | Diomede | 159088
Can someone explain this verse abit more for me? Does this mean that to qualify as an overseer a mans children must be christians, or that they should be respectable, not rebellious? Does it just refer to children before they've reached adulthood? Thanks.
30 | how should overseers children act? | 1 Tim 3:4 | Diomede | 159113
Thanks CDBJ for your thoughts. So are you saying that if a mans children are disobediant and disrespectful to him then he doesn't meet the criteria for an overseer? I know of several godly parents whos adult children have completely rebelled and have been disrespectful to their parents and the way they have been brought up. Are these parents excluded from being overseers because of their adult childrens choices? |

31 | Grateful for the forum | 1 Tim 3:4 | Diomede | 159128
CDBJ I do apologise if to you my questions seem naive, you obiviously have alot more knowledge about the Bible and life than I do. I've really only just beginning to take the bible seriously and to try to get the the heart of what it actually means, and how I am to apply it every day. I don't have more mature christians who I can ask my dumb questions to, and so I really appreciate having this forum. Thank for your answer.I do agree with you, I was just asking the question so that I could be sure for myself of the verses meaning. Thanks |

32 | Why is a good reputaion so important? | 1 Tim 3:7 | Diomede | 156510
How does having a good reputation with non-christians stop one falling into the devils trap?
33 | What were the rights of widows? | 1 Tim 5:3 | Diomede | 222108
What were the rights of widows in Bible times? It seems to me that through outthe whole Bible God is concerned that the widows be looked after and not taken advantage of. Is this because, without a husband they were more vulnerable, and didn't have so many rights if they were on their own? Did this change if they widowed but had a son? Can anyone claify for me what a widow could and couldn't do, and/or recommend any good materail on the subject. Thank you. |

34 | widows rights | 1 Tim 5:3 | Diomede | 222159
Thanks. I guess what I'm really wanting to know is the background behind those Bible verses. From the verses I've read about widows in the Bible it seems to me that God was concerned that they be looked after and not taken advantage of. So my question is, why was that nessasary? What rights did they have. The verses suggest that they lost rights when their husbands died. Could they run a business, own property etc.
35 | Can't find this verse! | Heb 10:16 | Diomede | 152259
I have been told that their is a verse in the bible that says some thing along the lines of - Every man in his heart knows there is a God. However I can't find it any where. Does anyone know which verse this might be?
36 | How was salvation seen in OT? | Heb 11:1 | Diomede | 222571
Can someone please tell me how the Old Testament writers understood salvation? I know they were ultimately saved by Christ which the sacrifical system pointed to, but, what did they think they got saved from? It seems to me that David in Psalms was wanting salvation from his physical enemies. Through Judges, the same thing, Israel needed saving from the nations that oppressed them. Can anyone find verses that show they saw salvation as eternal life, cause it seems to me that for them salvation was connected to the present difficulty?
37 | Who are the spirits in 1 Peter 3 v 19? | 1 Pet 3:19 | Diomede | 151911
Who are these spirits Jesus preached to? Does this refer to Jesus going down to hell between his death and resurrection? If so then why would he only preach to those who were round at the time of Noah, and what would be the point of preaching to them , since they couldn't choose to follow him anyway. Could this refer to Christ appearing on earth in Noahs time to try win back people? Or maybe just his spirit being on earth trying to get through to peoples hearts before the flood? Is there anything else in the bible that would support Christ or his Spirit being on earth before the flood? I am interested to hear peoples ideas, as I can't make sense of this. Thanks |

39 | Is God beyond time as we know it? | Rev 21:6 | Diomede | 158298
Does this verse mean God exsists in a way that is beyond time as we know it? If so, then when we go to be with him will we exsist in the same way?
40 | References to God being timeless. | Rev 21:6 | Diomede | 158438
Thanks Doc for your thoughts. This is a huge concept I am trying to get my head around. Could you give me the references for some of the other scriptures on the same subject which you mentioned? Also, the paper you refer to, is that something I could access on-line? Thanks for your help. |
