201 | Who Then Can Be Saved? | Luke 18:26 | Robert Nicholson | 36449
Brother Joe: Regarding the "eye of a needle" Easton's Bible Dictionary defines the expresssion: "used only in the proverb, "to pass through a needle's eye" (Matthew 19:24; Mark 10:25; Luke 18:25). Some interpret the expression as referring to the side gate, close to the principal gate, usually called the "eye of a needle" in the East; but it is rather to be taken literally." It was not my intention to intimate that man can in any way earn his own salvation. I agree it is all of God. I was thinking more of repentance, in which the rich man would have to turn against his coveteousness or love of his riches before he could follow Jesus. Thanks Robert |

202 | please explain this verse for me | Luke 23:43 | Robert Nicholson | 40533
When the Lord Jesus died upon the cross, his body was buried in Joseph of Armithia's new tomb. His soul went to paradise a section in hell or hades. Hades in the bible at the time of Christ was the place of departed spirits. According to Luke 16: 19-31 hades had a section in which souls were comforted and a section where souls were in torment. Between the two their was a great gulf fixed which prevented any from moving from one section to the other. The psalmist penned these prophetic words regarding the Lord Jesus "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." ( Pslam 16:10) Jesus did not suffer in hell, because his suffering was on the cross. However, he did descend into paridise after his death. Thus he promised the dying thief that "today wilt thou be with me in paradise meaning the comfort side of hades or hell. However, we find that when the Lord Jesus arose from the dead the comfort section of hades was emptied and move to the very presence of God. We read in Ephesians "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men" (Eph. 4:8) We find that Paul in 2 Cor. 12: 1-4 speaks of being caught up into the third heaven V2, being caught up to paradise v.4 When Jesus ascended to his father in heaven he lead a multitude of souls from paradise with him. Thus, paradise refers to the third heaven the abode of God. I hope this helps Robert |

203 | please explain this verse for me | Luke 23:43 | Robert Nicholson | 40537
Roberhart: Please consider the following The psalmist writes concerning the Lord Jesus: "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." When Jesus died his body was buried in the new tomb of Joseph of Arimitha and his soul went to hell or better rendered "hades" Hades was the place of departed spirits and consisted of a compartment of comfort and a compartment in which was torment. Up until the time of Christ those who died in faith went to paradise located in hades which is sometimes referred to as Abraham's bosum. Read Luke 16: 19-31 However, we find the triumph of the resurrection of Christ "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive (or lead a multitude of captives) and gave gifts to men. Now that he ascended, what ist but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all heavens, that he might fill all things" ( Eph. 4:8-10) It is suggested that when the Lord Jesus ascended he trimphantly emptied the comfort side of paridise transferring those who had died in faith into the third heaven the abode of God which you have point out. In other words Jesus was the last man to descend into paradise and after his resurrection he ascended to the right hand of his father above. Those believers who have died since the cross "are absent from the body and present with the Lord" Praise his name. |

205 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | Robert Nicholson | 65888
davidxisted: I believe you have the correct take on 1 Peter 3:18-20 In v. 19 "By which" in this verse refers back to the Spirit at the end of v.18 which I believe is the Holy Spirit. "By which (the Holy Spirit) (God) spoke to the spirits in prison". I believe these are people or spirits who are now in prison in view of v20" Which (Who) sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah..." As Noah built the ark, he was a preacher to righteousness (1 Peter 2:5) to those who God was dealing with before the flood. In Gen 6:3 "God said my Spirit shall not always strive with man..." These people of Noah's day were disobedient to the Holy Spirit and except for 8 souls all were eternally lost. This question about our Lord Jesus Christ has been viewed from many angles, some from the scripture while others from our imagination. What does the scriptures say? In the old testament scriptures God speaks about his Son after death "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell(hades); neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption" ( Psalm 16:10) Where is hades or What is hades? Strong's word "hades" # 86 refers to the place of departed Spirits after their physical death. A later use speaks of the grave. We know that when Jesus died he went to Paradise and his body was put in Josephs new tomb. Peter reminds us of this "He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell(hades), neither did his flesh see corruption. (Acts 2:31) Our Lord Jesus Christ also spoke of "hades" in Luke 16: 19-31 He shows it to be the place of departed spirits and that it is divided into 2 sections, one man was in torment while the other was comforted in Abraham's bosum. Jesus made it clear that between the two their was a great divide, in other words our eternal destiny is determined before we die. On the cross with confidence the Lord Jesus Christ said to the dying thief "Today shalt thou be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43) Jesus knew exactly where he was going after death. People have been asking "did Jesus suffer in hell (hades)after his death"? The scriptures only speak of the suffering of Christ upon the cross, first at the hands of men and secondly and more terribly at the hands of God when he was made sin for us. (Isaiah53:5) When those dark hours of suffering were over Jesus spoke with a loud voice a very important statement "It is Finished!"(John 19:30) What did he mean? He meant that the work on the cross was Complete! Never again would he suffer for sin because on the cross he satisfied the holy claims of God against sin. It is also noteworthy and important to note that when the work was finished our Saviour commended himself to God and dismissed his own spirit. (Luke23:46) It was an act of rest for Jesus as his spirit went to the comfort of paradise. We know that his body was placed in the tomb and that it never saw corruption because of his perfections. After 3 days he is resurrected from the dead, fourty days later he is taken up into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. (Heb. 1:3) Where is paradise know? Christians today in this age are absent from the body and present with the Lord(2Cor. 5:8) Paul speaks of being caught up into the third heaven or being caught up into paradise. (1Cor. 12:2-4 What about the souls of Abraham who were at comfort in Abraham's bosom? It has been suggested that Ephesians 4:8-10 refers to Christ as he ascends on high he takes the souls of the redeemed with him and that they are now present with the Lord. "Never more shall God, Jehovah Smite the Shepherd with the sword; Never again shall cruel sinners Set at nought our glorious Lord! Praise his worthy name! Robert |

Dear brother Tim: Please forgive me for butting in. 207 | How to connect old with new testament | Luke 24:44 | Robert Nicholson | 37876
It has been said "that the Old Testament is the New concealed and the New Testament is the old revealed. From Genesis to Revelation the theme is redemption through Christ. In Luke 24:44 the risen Christ tells his disciples "These are the words which I spoke unto you when I was yet with you. That all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me" Luke 24:44 In order to try to understand any scripture we must try to see through the eyes of those to whom it first was given. We can only accomplish this by knowing their history and culture. Some people have difficulty with the structure of the old testament which was originally in Chronological order in the Hebrew version at the time of Christ. I have found in my old testament studies that when I try to see Christ in the various type and shadows, I become better equipped in understanding the new testament. The old testament provides us with specific prophecies which Christ fulfilled in the new testament times and will continue to fulfil in the future. The grace and love of God is seen as God deals with humans who seem bent on disobedience. I agree that in the new testament we see God manifest in the flesh in the person of his son. The Lord Jesus fulfilled the law and bore its awful curse on the cross, thereby bringing to all a dispensation of grace. Just a few thoughts Robert |

208 | prophecies jesus filled where in bbl? | Luke 24:44 | Robert Nicholson | 67375
Greetings finalife: Christ after his resurrection said this to his disciples: "These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things might be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms concering me" (Luke 24:44) In other words Jesus is telling us that throughout the entire old testament, God is telling us in prophecies and showing us in Old Testament shadows and types: his Son Jesus Christ. A) One of the first pictures of Christ is found in Genesis 3:21 Adam and Eve were naked and ashamed, they tried to cover themselves with their own works by making coverings from fig leaves. However, they were not covered until God covered them with the coats of skins. This is a picture of the righteousness of Christ which clothes is person who has been redeemed by his blood. B) The first direct prophecy is found in the same chapter of Genesis when the Lord says "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thous shalt bruise his heal. (Gen 3:15) God is making a promise here that the seed of the woman (which is fulfilled in Christ) would be bruised by satan and yet in that bruising of Christ upon the cross satan and his kingdom would be crushed. This is the first promise of a redeemer. Others: C) Gen. 12:3 the promise to Abraham "in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed" Fulfilled in Matt 1:1 were we read of "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham and the way whereby God has blessed all the families of the earth. D) Micah 5:2 "But thou Bethlehme Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of the shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruller in Israel: whose goings forth have been from old, from everlasting" The fulfillment is seen in the birth place of Christ in Luke 2:4 E) Isaiah 7:14 concerning the birth of Christ. "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. This is fulfilled in Luke 1: 26, 30, 31 and chp. 2: 7, 1nd 21 It is here we read of his virgin birth and his name Immanuel or "God with us". F) Jerimiah 31:15 "Thus saith the Lord; a voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not (they were dead) Jeremiah 31:14 This is fulfilled by Herod who in his attempt to kill Jesus, "slew all children that were in Bethlehem, and all the coasts thereof, of two years and under" Matt. 2: 16-18 G) Hosea 11:1 "When Israel was a child, then I loved him and called my son out of Egypt. This is fulfilled in Matt. 2: 13-15 in which Joseph was warned in a dream to flee to Eygpt for the safety of the child. Thus, when they returned the scripture was fulfilled "Out of Egypt have I called my Son?" The amazing thing about this prophecy like many others we had to wait for the fulfillment before we could understand the original prophecy. Others: Psalm 2:7 fulfilled Matt. 3:16 Psalm 78: 2-4 fulfilled Matt. 13: 34, 35 Isaiah 61: 1-2 fulfilled in Luke 4:17-21 Isaiah 53:3 fullfilled in John 1:11 Zechariah 9:9 ful in Matt. 21: 6-9 Psalm 8:2 ful in Matt. 21:15-16 Psalm 41:9 ful in Matt. 26: 41-15 Psalm 35:11 ful in Mark 14:55, 56 Isaiah 53:7 ful in Mark 15: 3-5 Isaiah 50:6 in Matt. 27: 26-31 Isaiah 53:12 in Luke 23:32-33 Zechariah 12:10 and Psalm 22:16 in John 20:27 I would suggest you read Psalm 22 in its entirety and compare it to the sufferings of Christ on the cross in the four gospels. I have only just begun the list. I hope that when you read these references that you will be able to appreciate Christ. When we look at such a subject we are like a child with a sand pail trying to empty the ocean. However, I would be happy to discuss any of the above or to provide many more. In Christ Robert |

209 | is jesus god? | John 1:1 | Robert Nicholson | 43853
Juthcrst1 The Bible makes it very clear that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. The subject of the Godhead is an awesome truth which transcends the capablitity of finite minds. Nevertheless, God in his word has shown us that " For there are three which bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost and these three are one (1John 5:7) At his baptism, as the Lord Jesus was lifted "out of the water, the heavens opened, and Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." (Mark 1: 10,11) Jesus demonstrated that he is God manifest in the flesh in the fact that he was able to forgive sins. In Mark 2:5 Jesus declared to a man sick of palsey, "Son thy Sins be forgiven thee". Immediately the scribes reasoned in their hearts, accusing Jesus of blasphemy and in their derision spoke the truth "who can forgive sins, but God only: (v8) Jesus responded with an answer to their reasonings, "That you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins" (V10) He then healed the sick man of his palsy. The writer of the Hebrews writes "Who (Jesus) being in the brightness (effulgence ) of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high (Heb. 1:3) The Son of God is co-equal and co-eternal, indeed he could say "he that hath seen me hath seen the father" (John 14:9b) Why did Jesus not tell people directly "I am God"? Jesus had nothing to prove, his walk on this earth and his fulfilment of those things written of him in the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the "Christ of God" To the human mind his incarnation is a mystery. "Who being in the form of God, thouht it not a thing to be grasped at to be equal with God" We then read of his lowly stoop into humankind "he made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of me..." Phil. 2: 6-9 Robert |

Brother Tim: Thank you for your very clear exergesis of John chp. 1. Our entire hope rests upon who Jesus is. We praise his Name as the one who is co-equal, co-eternal with God and yet he is the one who was willing to take our place upon the cross. Robert |

rferg: "you say God is Jesus then who is the Father?" Your question was asked many years ago by Philip: "Philip said unto him, Lord show us the father, and it will satisfy us. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father..." (John 14:8,9) As finite human beings we will never fully fathom the Godhead which an infinite truth. There is one God who is expressed in three distinct persons who are co-equal and co-eternal although each has a specific sphere in the Godhead. This is seen in many scriptures "The Father sent the Son to be the saviour of the world" (1 John 4:14) The Son took upon himself the form of a bond servant and was made in the likeness of men, and being fashioned as a man he became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." (Phil.2: 7 to 8) Moreover, Christ at his bodily resurrection proved that he is indeed the Son of God, God the Son and as you have mentioned is seated on the right hand of the Majesty on high. After the resurrection God sent the Holy Spirit into the world, not to speak of himself, but to speak of Christ. There is a real man seated at his Father's side and he is our Lord Jesus Christ who is God manifest in the flesh. There is total harmony in the Godhead. It is a serious thing to undermine the Diety of Christ. In 1 John2:22 "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. I do not quote the above to label or demean you as a person, however, I believe we must pay attention to God's word concerning his Son. Peace in his Name Robert |

215 | The origin of life | John 1:3 | Robert Nicholson | 34267
Greetings JK316 In Gen.1:1 "in the beginning God" Before this universe came into being "God". It is difficult to comprehend a Source without beginning or end. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." This is a dateless past. In Gen 1:2 "Now the earth was without form; and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God was brooding over the waters. We have no idea how long the earth was this way. Some have suggested that the earth became this way due to the judgment of God on a past civilization. The uprising and fall of Lucifer have been suggested as the cause to such a catastrophe. v.3 "God said let there be light and there was light" from this moment on we see how the earth was renewed to what we now enjoy. We realize that the creatures of God were brought forth after their kind. I think that we find in most species that over time they may adapt or change, but do not cross over kinds. The created earth is constanly changing and is much different today than it was in the day of Adam. As I am sure you are aware that today, we have people who believe in a young earth, whereas there are others which accept the old earth. Personally, I favour the old earth due to the facts of the fossil record and the evidences of the geological ages. I believe however, that behind it all "is God" Creator and Sustainer of all things. Another thing to consider in Genises, that we are not told how long Man was on the earth in total fellowship with God before sin entered the world. I certainly do not think it was just a few months I look forward to hearing your thoughts Robert |

216 | Whose are you? | John 1:12 | Robert Nicholson | 69372
Greetings brother Ray: It seems that at times human language fails to grasp eternal trues. You have asked "When we receive the Light and become a child of God, what does it mean to believe in Him? What does in mean to receive his fulness? John 1:16 My question is: do we receive the Light or does the Light shine into our darkened souls to reveal to us our need? In v. 9 "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" I will attempt to explain what I am trying to get at. We know from other scriptures that we do not become a child of God until we experience the new birth or are born from above. However, we know that before we are born again the Spirit of God reveals to us our need of Christ. We are made to realize that we are accountable to God. I believe that at this point the truth of John 1:12 comes into view. We are shown our need and God by his Spirit presents Christ as the only answer for our need. "But to as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in (His) name". Would you agree that receive and believe have the same meaning? I receive, I believe, I accept or I rest upon the record that God has given me regarding the work of Christ, at that moment the Holy Spirit indwells my heart and I am born from above. "And of his fulness have all we received (those who have believed on him) and grace for grace" John 1:16 I believe this refers back to verse 14 "(and we beheld his glory, as the glory of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. I noticed a reference to Col 1:19 "That it please the Father that in him should all fulness dwell" Is the thought that when we are born again that Christ dwells in us by his Spirit through his grace which is infinite in Christ? God bless you Robert |

217 | Whose are you? | John 1:12 | Robert Nicholson | 69460
Greetings brother Ray: It is wonderful to exhange thoughts on the things of God. I enjoy your style which causes one to think even if it is sometimes outside the box. I agree with your first point that we can be enlightened to the truth of the gospel and yet not accept or receive Christ as our Saviour and Lord. I think I understand where you are coming from with the spirit and Spirit. Consider Romans 8: 8-10 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ( notice that in the above verse we have Spirit 3 ways a)in the Spirit b)Spirit of God c) Spirit of Christ And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (If Christ be in you) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. ( "The Spirit of him that raised up Jesus") (" shall quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you") Dear brother as you are probably aware I believe in the three persons of the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I am somewhat confused at this point. 20 years ago I thought I understood everything! I have looked at it this way. The Father who is Spirit sent the Son to be the Saviour of the World. Before his death Jesus told his disciples that he would not leave them comfortless. "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (advocate), that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you" John 14:16-17 We read of the work of the coming Comforter in John 16:8-11 (towards the world and v.13-15 (to his disciples" Ray is the Comforter the Holy Spirit? I find that the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ and the Holy Spirit appear to blend together. However, I believe that Christ dwells with us by his Spirit. As I write this statement in my mind I see the Spirit of Christ and the Holy Spirit as the same. Regarding salvation: Do we not believe that God calls sinners to Christ as he strives with them by his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not speak of himself, but of Christ John 16:13-15 Brother Ray, I will stop for now and await your response. In Christ Robert |

Amen brother Moran: I love the words of Hebrews 10:7 "Then said I (Christ) Lo, I come in the (volume of the book that is written of me) to do thy will O God" Amazing grace that the eternal son of the eternal God was willing to come down to where we were and to pay such a price that we might be forgiven and have a personal relationship with him forever. God bless you brother Robert |

Nicodemus by world standards was a good man, a teacher of the teachers and a searcher for the truth. I understand that as a Pharisee Phd. (so to speak) he would have memorized the first five books of the old testament along with many of the Psalms and Prophets. He believed in God and knew that God had promised a redeemer to his people. Nevertheless, Jesus points out his need "ye must be born again" As you have pointed out even Nicomdemus needed to be born again. To be born from above, it is a work of God which is received by faith. I love verse 16 which God has used to bring many people to Christ. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life." Robert |

Greetings brother Hank: Thank you for the welcome back. I do appreciate those on this forum who love the saviour, not from an intellectual point of view, but from a personal relationship with him. I find that no matter how often we quote John 3:16 in reflection I am always amazed that God loved and loves me and that he was willing to give his Son to the cross on my behalf. As I think of the "whosoever" I am reminded by the words of a song "the promise takes you in." I am presently floundering at Trinity due to loss of time due to heart problems. However, I look to the Lord knowing that he knows what is best for each one of us. Robert |
