2003 | Unreasonable? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 126776
Hi Stultis, I don't think it is unreasonable for us to ponder anything if our heart is in sincere and honest pursuit of God's truth. "Seek, and ye shall find!" Jesus said that as Jonah was in the belly of the fish so he would be in the heart of the earth. This does not mean that Jonah was actually in the earth, but that one thing illustrates another. Jesus uses the familiar account to illustrate the point He is making, but that does not change the meaning of the original story. In Ex. 20:9-11, God says that as He created the the heavens and the earth in six days, then rested on the seventh day. He blessed that day, and told the Israelites to likewise rest on that day. The simple plain meaning of this is that these are days as we know them, as we would rest on the seventh day, that is the kind of day God created in. Hebrews and Psalms speak of the day of rest in the grander scheme of God, particularly Hebrews. We are to cease from our own work, and enter His rest. Hebrews uses one thing to illustrate another, but again, that does not mean that it changes the meaning of the original story. Love in Christ, Mark |

2004 | Skeletons of evolution? False? | Genesis | mark d seyler | 126726
Hi Henry, We do not have to dismiss the fossil finds. Dinosaurs could have easily lived before the flood, feeding their huge bodies on the massive vegatation growth. The razor teeth of T-Rex, for instance, long assumed to be a predator, would be the perfect carrion eater. Noah could have easily taken dinos onto the ark as babies. The Creation Evidence Museum in Glen Rose TX (they have a website - site-search fossils) has numerous examples of modern fossils that show fossilization can happen quickly, and that just because something is fossilized does not mean its excessively old. My favorite of theirs is a fossil of a sewn sandle having stepped on a trilobite! Skeletons of "partially evolved" humans have without exception been shown to be either outright hoaxes, or of people with known physical maladies. The Paluxy (sp.) River in Texas has fossil dino footprints with human footprints inside them. The point is, the fossils and other geological finds do not contradict the Bible, but they have by and large been falsely interpreted. I hope this helps. Love in Christ, Mark |

2005 | Born Again Christians - Why so weird? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 126709
Hi Henry, Those who are daily walking in the Spirit, produce the fruit of the Spirit, agape love (love that devotes itself to the object of that love). This love becomes their chief characturistic. Those who do not actually know the Lord Jesus, or who do not keep His word, will not have this love. We will see in those people the works of the flesh, and those works do not attract others to Jesus. In the parable of the tares, Jesus told us that the enemy would plant look-alikes, but that they would not be true. Our mission is to minister to everyone around us, believer, unbeliever, or unknown, and allow the Lord Jesus to give us understanding and guidance to how He wants us to do that. 1 John 2:5-10 but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining. The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now. The one who loves his brother abides in the Light and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 2006 | searching for the truth | 1 Cor 11:3 | mark d seyler | 125861
Hi Country Girl, (and to EdB, I realize my original error in not replying to the original thread, however, now the Country Girl has asked for input, I wish to respond to that) I wanted to give you a more complete response to your question. I hope this helps. The first question is whether spiritual gifts are or are not for today. Some say they are not, because of I Cor 13:10 “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part (these gifts) shall be done away.” They say “that which is perfect” is the finished Bible. The logic is that since now we have the complete word of God, we are no longer given spiritual gifts, that they were a weaker substitute. What are spiritual gifts for? 1 Cor 14:12 “Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church,” and Eph. 4:12-13 “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:” This goes toward answering what “that which is perfect” is. The perfect (complete) man. The gifts are for us until we no longer need them. I become sick, and I need healing. I struggle with difficult scripture, and I need teaching. Before I knew Christ, I needed evangelizing. I become discouraged, and need exhortation. And so on. So I look towards my brothers and sisters to minister to me according to the gifts God has given them. How do we know what are the true gifts, and that they are indeed the work of the Holy Spirit? The Bible gives several lists of gifts, and I would not considers any so-called gift that is not included on these lists. In 1 Cor. 12, Paul compares the giving of spiritual gifts for each of our functioning within the body of Christ as the functioning of the parts of our bodies. In a nutshell, the hand needs to be a hand, and the eye needs to be an eye, each one looking to its own purpose. That is how we need to be. If my gift is administration, I should not try to be an evangalist (I am referring to my primary ministry according to the gifting of the Spirit, not that the Spirit would never lead me to evangalize, or even change my ministry, it is according as He wills, so I do not restrict Him). If the Holy Spirit has set me within the body of Christ as a prophet, and I think I should, or just want to, be working miracles, or helping, or governing, my ministry will not be empowered by the Holy Spirit as if I were performing my given ministry of prophecy. If a person is truly gifted by the Holy Spirit, and they are submitted to God, the fruit of their ministry will glorify Jesus. John 16:14 “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” Their ministry will be effective. Ephesians 3:7 “Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.” It will be effective because it is God’s power, not man’s effort. 1 Peter 4:11 “if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” As I have stated elsewhere, even if my gift appears effective, yet I lead you to a different god then what the Bible teaches, then you are to ignore me (Deut. 13:1-3). I understand this to include false doctrine, as this then descibes someone who is not the God of the Bible. And finally, the true earmark of the life that is ruled by God’s Spirit is love. If I govern, do I lord over you to make my “kingdom” run my way, or do I serve seeking to give you every benefit and help possible, because you are the King of King’s child? If I prophesy, do I make sure you know what I great saint I am, or am I awed that our Lord would even speak through me? Is my speaking in tongues in pride, or in private? Is my teaching pedantic or patient? After you have received ministry from another, do you feel more or less loved? Have you been drawn closer to Jesus? Are you thankful for the loving care your loving Father has provided you? These are of course subjective determinations, however, love is the defining factor of the Spirit-led life. The true believer who is maturing in the Lord Jesus will increasingly be a servant, and increasingly empowered to serve. God works everything in harmony, and I firmly believe that if I simply submit to God today, He will lead me to serve Him today, in whatever capacity He wishes. When God works in my life, either by your ministry, or by using me to minister to you, that truly is a wonderful gift from His hand! Love in Christ, Mark |

2007 | searching for the truth | 1 Cor 11:3 | mark d seyler | 125774
Hi Country Girl, You've asked a rather involved question, unfortunately I do not have much time. However, I believe the true answer to this question to be extremely important to the correct functioning of the Body of Jesus. Moses wrote that if what a prophet predicts happens, but he leads you to other gods, don't go after him. If someone claims, and even demonstrates, abilities beyond what is normal for humans, but leads into doctrines not in the Bible, it's not a gift from the Spirit. God's Spirit gives us abilities to manifest His caring for us, that it would not be me trying to minister to you just as me, but would be God ministering to you through me. This most interesting discussion of the understanding the Bible is an excellent example. We need to identify those who have a true gift of teaching to help us to understand what the Bible is really telling us. We have to check what they teach to make sure that they are really teaching the truth. If we accept that the gifts as named, described, and taught about in the Bible are still for today, (I do), then we need to submit ourselves to God, and He will distribute as He wills. He will lead us in useing them. We can accept by faith that if we are yielded to God, He will not lead us astray. And the Bible is the Final Authority. Jesus said to examine the fruit. Does the use of a particular gift glorify Jesus? Are people's lives being transformed? I have to go now, but I will continue to follow as I am able. God bless you! Mark |

Do you think Eph 4:7-14 have a bearing on whether the gifts of the Spirit are for today? "But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." (Now this, "He ascended" --what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting". If I read this right, does it mean that the gifts God has given us will be there for us to minister to each other, until we have been perfected in Christ, either by completing our work in this world, or by Jesus returning for us? What do you think? Mark |

2009 | Bible's view on suicide? | Matt 27:5 | mark d seyler | 125612
I believe that Justme has hit the nail on the head. We are either saved by grace or saved by works. Is one sin worse than another? Certainly God wants us to live in victory but we don't always do that. Do I walk outside of God's will if I suicide? Absolutely! Do I walk outside of God's will if I lie? Absolutely! "The branch in me that does not bear fruit the Father takes away" John 15. Suicide is part of a fruitless life, as other kinds of fruit-less-ness. I tried to commit suicide many times when I was in my teens. I was manic and depressive, until one day when my body chemistry corrected and that all went away. They were very dark days, Jesus treated me with love, even miraculously preserving my life. Nothing shall separate us from the love of God!
2010 | short and long version of Mark 16:8 | Mark 16:9 | mark d seyler | 125522
Hi EdB, In Mark's gospel, it does not specify who they actually reported Jesus' resurrection to. Could it have been other disciples than the eleven? The two that Jesus met on the road were not of the eleven, since in Luke 24:33 they found the 11. |

2011 | A question for all men - please answer! | 1 Pet 3:1 | mark d seyler | 124896
Hi Joy, I have mentioned a wife's submissive role perhaps twice in our marraige, both times as we have been studying those portions of the Bible together. Beyond that, it's between her and the Lord whether or not she obeys His Word. The last time we talked about it, I made a point to show that God give one instruction the wife, one to children, and three to the husband/father. I do not "pull rank". If I pattern the way I treat my wife after how Jesus loves His church, well, suffice to say that I do not always do what God wants me to do, and He doesn't always force me. Sometimes He lets me find out the hard way that I should have followed His plan. I am prepared to allow her the same opportunity, or to act unilaterally in case of something that could really be devastating, just as God does with me. I thank the Lord that 99.999 percent of the time we are in unity. In case of absolute impasse, I turn to God. It's His rule, and we are His servants. It's always been solved through prayer. Love in Christ, Mark |

2013 | What is your take on Westcott and Hort? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 124438
If you can receive this, I am an openhearted Christian who loves the Word and loves truth. I do not insist, or even believe, that the KJV is the only or the best. It's an excellent translation, but it's not the original autographs. I use every resource I can get my hands on to find out as best I can what God really said. And I have a serious issue with someone who, while they are engaged in occultic pursuits, sets out to tell the rest of us what should and should not be in the Bible. Isn't the occult something that we turn our backs to when we are born again? So how can I trust those who do not? (this is my personal issue) Is it really in keeping with the mission and purpose of this forum to engage in name calling "nothing is more offensive than a ignorant Christian who refuses to see and believe the TRUTH", "those who choose to remain ignorant", this judges my heart which you do not see, as well as going on to presume I am insistant on the KJV, which I am not. I understand that you phrased your harsh words in ways that you may disclaim your intent, but the attitude is easily seen. I have looked at some of Dr. White's material, he appears to be refuting a particular booklet, while not addressing my concerns. Perhaps he covers that in parts I have not read, it seems to me that he perpetuates the debate over particular translational points on statements made by a certain other person. 2014 | What is your take on Westcott and Hort? | Bible general Archive 2 | mark d seyler | 124419
Hi Tim, I believe God protects His message. To any who are looking, God will teach in spite of how men may have re-interpreted His Word. Like our Lord said, "My word will accomplish the purpose I sent it for". Chuck Missler likes to compare the Bible to a holograph - if you remove part, you don't lose image, but you do lose resolution. The best any of us can do is to open our hearts to the Lord, be diligent to study His Word however He leads us, and trust in His Holy Spirit to teach us. Love in Christ, Mark

Hi EdB, Thank you for your information. Personally I use every translation (except, of course the "new world" re-write) to gain any information I can add to my own studies in the greek (again, any I can get my hands on). I was not aware the lessor significance of Westcott-Hort in the current tranlsation work. God Bless!! -Mark |

I've been following the discussion regarding KJV vs. other translations. There has been a lot of good material presented. What is your take on the Westcott and Hort Greek New Testament. How widely used has this NT been in translating our modern versions. What about Westcott and Hort's well documented disdain for God's Word, and their background in the occult? I absolutely believe the infallability of God's Word, and that He will protect it against tampering, and will maintain the integrity of His message.
