181 | romans chapter 14 verse 5 | Rom 12:2 | JCrichton | 148696
Hi, Monica! Then as now people fall into the practice of legalism... sadly, man being man, there would be great debate over everything with the inclusion of the various circumventions of the Law... More than once, Jesus admonished the Pharisees and Sadducees for upholding not the Law as given to them by Moses, but their own adaptation of the Law (ie: only the adulterous woman was brought to Jesus--the man conveniently slipped away!); Jesus even explained to them that the Sabbath (the seventh day) was made to serve man not man to serve the Sabbath--another Law they broke when it was convenient or lucrative for them to violate it!--it is about such days (Sabbath and God's Holy days) that Paul was speaking on... Paul wants us to know that we are called not to occupy ourselves with simplistic formulas but to live our lives in Jesus and for Jesus... so if you serve the Lord thinking that every day is a special day, a gift from God, you do well... if, on the other hand, I serve Jesus as fervently as you yet I choose one day of the week to offer Him greater homage, I too would be serving God... I would read Romans 14:5-9 in light of Hebrews 6:1-3... let us go forward, in Christ, not seeking divisions and condescension, serving Christ and our fellow Christians, seeking to edify the Church and not our egos. God Bless! Angel |

182 | were infants baptized? | Acts 16:15 | JCrichton | 148695
Hi, Jeff! As the previous posts noted, whole households were baptized... from those passages you can conclude that: a) Children, including infants, were excluded from baptism, as they were seen as insignificant to the Body of Christ or b) Children were included in the baptism, as they were seen as significant to the Body of Christ... If we opt for the first thought (a), we must conclude that the children were left unbaptized till they were of sufficient age (not specified in Scripture) to be baptized--of course, their future baptism would depend on their ability to travel to a place where they could be baptized or wait about till other ministers would come their way or someone in their household or village would be delegated the authority to baptize the children as they reached the proper age... Opting for the second thought (b), would afford one baptism for all the famility members, bestowing all family members the same vital importance in the Body of Christ... if nothing else, infant baptism could have immerged as a form of tradition where as baptism replaces the offering at the Temple and the circumcision of the male child (both happening while the child is less than a month old)... 183 | Popes predicted since 1143AD | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 148694
Hi, regguh! I though that St. Malachy was a variation in spelling of St. Malachi, please forgive my error! I am not aware of St. Malachy's prophecies... but if you give a little time I can research the topic for you... just drop a line to let me know how to proceed. God Bless! Angel |

184 | we are saints | 1 Cor 6:1 | JCrichton | 148692
Hi, Doc! No problem... my personal philosophy is that while we attempt to convey a thought we are afforded the opportunity of deepening our own understanding... and, if that fails, our Lord Commanded that we are to abide in Him (His Peace, His Love); that we are to serve (edify, protect, respect, encourage) one another... In Christ's Love! Angel |

185 | Was this promise fulfilled? | Josh 1:4 | JCrichton | 148599
Hi, Mommapbs! The Promise did not fail! Remember that there were conditions set on the Hebrews... amongt them were: a) that they had to take the land from the occupants, b) that they had to take full possession of the land by either eradicating or expelling the occupants, c) they had to live separate from the nations around them (not emulating their customs and not intermarrying with them)... Israel failed on many regards... including not taking the land when God commanded them to do it! I compare the loss of the Promised land to the loss the Holy Spirit: both the Hebrews of ancient times and Christians of modern times came short of God's Gift... the Gift was never removed or limited; it is the recipients who failed to partake of God's Gift fully! God Bless! Angel |

186 | Popes predicted since 1143AD | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 148597
Hi, regguh! This forum facilitates Christian interchange on the Holy Scripture... the book of Malachi does not contain predictions... Though prophecy and prediction are congruent, we tend to define prediction as a divination made by man; while a prophecy is define as a revelation made by God to man through the Holy Spirit... I've just read through St. Malachi... there is no mention of x number of Popes... Personally I am not aware of extra-Biblical writings of St. Malachi; if that is your reference point, this site would not discuss dogmatic writings... perhaps you should go to www.ewtn.com; that is a Roman Catholic site and has additional reference sites that deal with Catholic issues... You are welcomed to open discusions on any Biblical subject that relates to the Holy Scripture... and, if you wish to do so, you can contact me directly at jcrichtonfs1@yahoo.com--I would be more than glad to look into your original query! God Bless! Angel |

187 | Nudity/ Sin | 1 Thess 4:15 | JCrichton | 148596
Hi, Hank! No problem... I've heard the expression ever since I can remember... but I still don't get it... would the jay bird not have to be featherless in order to be naked? ...I mean, I've seen some caged birds that for whatever reasons they have pluck out their feathers... quite a pitiful sight!... I was playing on the words and on the grotesqueness of such a bird (naked due to plucking out its feathers) and juxtapose the idea of this thread: a Christian plucking off his/her clothes in order to "feel" more contentment/peace... would this action not be the same as a dog going back to its vomit? Clearly, we are called to imitate Christ, not the whims of the world! ...when Adam and Eve lost their innocence and became cognizant of their nakedness two things happened: a) They made makeshift coverings and hid from God, and, b) God created clothing for them. Would Christians not be violating God's own mandates if we seek to expose ourselves as an attempt to get more in tune with ourselves and God? God Bless! Angel |

188 | Nudity/ Sin | 1 Thess 4:15 | JCrichton | 148551
Hi, Hank! I have very little knowledge about the physical appearance of birds... could you clarify this matter of this bird that apparently enjoys walking around naked... is the jay bird akin to that furless cat... I mean, is it born featherless or does it pluck them out to make some type of statement? Baring my ignorance... Angel |

189 | "Be about business in business" ? | Luke 12:42 | JCrichton | 148550
Hi, pry! Unfortunately Scripture is not an accumulation of teachings in various sciences (though it does cover all science)... still, since the Holy Scripture is God-inspired, the Holy Spirit has revealed much... some of the times we must employ several passages from various books in order to clarify a point... In addition to what has been offered here's my collaboration: Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.” And they were amazed at him. (Mark 12:17) If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:11) If we combine the above passages we could conclude that: a) We are God's, hence we are obliged to render to God what is God's, and, b) Whatever we do, we must do it in Christ Jesus so that in all things Christ is honored and through Him the Father is praised! God Bless! Angel |

190 | Animal images used by cults? | 1 Cor 8:9 | JCrichton | 148548
Hi, LinV! I think that your friend is misguided... she many be hypersensitive or her congregation may be teaching extremes... This could be an excellent point of discusion for you and your friend... you may be able to help her understand her error by working on the images on your shirt... The next time you meet with her bring up the subject yourself... ask her to clarify her objection and query her about the values on the image (if the owl were to be replaced by an eagle, a sparrow, a dove, raven, crow... would she still object to the depiction?... you could also go on line to search for related topics (animals and others as gods/amulets)... always return to the Bible as the major point of reference! God luck! God Bless! Angel |

191 | romans chapter 14 verse 1 | Rom 14:1 | JCrichton | 148547
Hi, Monica1! We are called to offer assistance for those who are less knowledgeable or less spiritual (weak in faith)... but we cannot lord our "maturity" over them by ridiculing their ignorance or misguidedness... we are to excercise love and patience as we bring them closer to the Lord! 192 | we are saints | 1 Cor 6:1 | JCrichton | 148546
Hi, Doc! I understand your concern... Salvation is gratis! There is nothing we can do to purify ourselves from our sins... though there is some form synergism associated with Salvation: abide in me! (John 15:1-6) We must be willful in our desire to receive God's Gift since God will not force anyone to obey and be Saved! The first chapter of John is a most wonderful reading... at the very beginning we find out that Jesus existed with God and that He is God, that He came to the world in a form similar to ours to rescue us from sin and to offer us the Grace of becoming sons and daughters of God... but even though this wonderful offering was made to all (beginning with the house of Israel) only those who Believe (accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, the only one who brings Salvation), it is clearly revealed that God's Hand did not force His Will upon the world coercing man to accept His Gift... It is a beautiful scene... the Word becomes flesh so that those of us who chose to accept Him may have eternal life! Still, the point I was attempting to make is that we cannot claim to be citizens of a priestly kingdom, anointed saints of Christ, if we do not abide in Him! God Bless! Angel |

193 | We ran from a major city. | Acts | JCrichton | 148545
Hi! I read through the chapter sited... could not find the answer to your question... I tried an on-line Bible, using a variation on the text from your question (We ran away from a major city because of the man in charge...), no results! If you are still looking for that Biblical passage, could you expand on the question? (name of city, man in charge, etc.) God Bless! Angel |

194 | Taking Him for His word | Matt 24:2 | JCrichton | 148470
Hi, Wild Olive! I understand your concern... let me take you to John 4:19-24, while speaking to a Samaritan woman Jesus reveals that same episode to befold Israel... there will be no longer a Temple building to which God's people will gather to worship... further, there will be a different mode of worshipping: Spirit and Truth (Holy Spirit and Jesus)... the era of Israel's continued Temple worshipping is near its end as He will be raised, as Moses raised the serpent in the desert, so that all who look to Him will be saved! In two thousand years the Temple has remained destroyed... Israel has not worshipped in the Temple... there are rumors of some Jewish organization/s planning to build a temple... if these rumors were to materialize, would Yahweh's Glory go back on Himself and frequent a building that He Himself prophecised against? Would the erection of a temple not be akin to the strange fire offered by Aarons sons or the well-intensioned Oza that touched the Ark as he attempted to keep it from falling from the cart? Would Yahweh's Wrath not burn against those who would profane His Word? God Bless! Angel |

195 | suicides and the bible | Gen 18:25 | JCrichton | 148469
"For what purpose will God awaken this criminal?" Hi! I did not mean to intrude on your post... but you are focusing on the wrong element... Jesus is the Resurrectin and the Life! Jesus did not promise the man on the cross next to Him that one day he would be forgiven... Jesus told him that on that very day he would be with Him in paradise! It is Jesus who cleanses us with His Blood... but don't forget that Scripture are not meant to limit God's Authority and Power... that man on the cross professed remorse and convicted himself a sinner while upholding Jesus as the Just (recognizing His innocence) and begging for mercy (recognizing His Authority over creation)... Jesus, the One who sees into the innermost of our beings, reconciled that man's transgressions with his profession of faith and his repentence (conviction of guilt)... that man received baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire! God Bless! Angel |

196 | suicides and the bible | Gen 18:25 | JCrichton | 148468
Hi, Massaiman! No! But don't let this cloud your mind... neither is there a word against pornographic materials, using dope (coke, crack, dust...), using household chemicals to get high, very little is said about prostitution, just as little is said about abortion, nothing against domestic violance, child-labor, racism... There is a Commandment not to kill--though many simply choose to apply this Commandment in the most stringent definition of the word... euthanasia, even though it sounds pleasant, it is nothing more and nothing less than killing! ...abortion, though it sounds foreing, practiced both abroad and at home (US) as a form of contraceptive, is nothing less than murdering the most innocent and defenseless of God's creation... Jesus tells us that there is only one sin for which we will not receive forgiveness: blaspheming against the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit is God and, in the Person of the Holy Spirit, He instructs and teaches man... to reject Him or refuse His teaching simply means death! Only the Father can bring us to Jesus... the Father chooses the Holy Spirit as His means to bring us to Jesus... without the Holy Spirit's cleansing (as Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit) we cannot be saved! But the premise that we can sin because Jesus died for the world is flawed... Jesus did not claim to die for all but for many... those who believe! And there's no such thing as preforgiveness of sin... I mean, as a Christian I cannot choose to rob a bank and expect Jesus to have forgiven me prior to my transgression... how ridiculous it would be for Jesus to hang around waiting for me to thank Him for keeping me safe from harm as I commit a preforgiven transgression?... breaking into a bank to steal money many not seem to be suicidal, but there are many repercusions to the act: injury/death of the perpetrator, injury/death of a guard, bank personnel or client, injury/death of a police officer or a passerby... can I preconfess to Christ and expect His forgiveness? So too is suicide... it is fatal (most of the times)... it is permanent (all of the times); when a person commits suicide he/she is rejecting Christ... he/she is saying that God does not assists His servants when they are burdened... suicide is not just a simgular act... a person that commits suicide renounces life (inclusive of all of God's gifts), family, friends, hope! It is a selfish act that pronounces that the individual, not God, has the authority over life and salvation! DO NOT KILL does not simply applies to others or the postnatal! DO NOT KILL never goes out of fashion nor does it loses its imperative! Jesus is so adamant about violance that He cautions even against injurious language: 21“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. (Matthew 5:21-22) So, it is not surprising that when asked about the greatest Commandment Jesus fuses the Love of God with the love of others and of ourselves! (Matthew 22:36-40)... Paul enumerates the value of love (1 Corinthians 13:4-8), verse 7 is superb: Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fails. We have a great weapon against death (suicide or otherwise): LOVE! God Bless! Angel |

197 | What is wrong? | 2 Cor 12:13 | JCrichton | 148467
Hi, Mommapbs! Surely Paul clarifies his service to the Church... he is careful not to present to them an obstacle in coming to Christ... he himself searches for employment while tending the flock... and, rather than for himself, he asks for contribution to help other less furtunate Christians... Here Paul plays on words and actions: Not being a burden to them, he chose to wave the authority to claim the provisions due to Christ's ministers... this is the great "wrong" which he speaks of... his determination to freely offer Christ to them--no-strings-attached! God Bless! Angel |

198 | THE BOOK OF ROMANS? | Romans | JCrichton | 148466
Hi, rubina! Though the book of Romans touches on many important issues and clarifies a great number of doctrinal teachings... no book in the Bible supercedes or summerizes God's Divine Inspiration! Just as an example, it is John who tells us that Christ is the Lamb of God... yet even he erred when he attempted to persuade Christ to baptize him instead of he baptizing Jesus... Still, John the Evangelist opens with the greatest most powerful writing in Scripture: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God." There is no single expression in the Bible that demonstrates the coexistence, as God, of the Father and the Son--other than Jesus' own statement in John 10:30... There are no shortcuts to the Word of God... we are called to know God... so we must devour every book with equal desire for enlightenment and the Truth! God Bless! Angel |

199 | who is the bridegroom | John 3:29 | JCrichton | 148465
Hi, Christian mother! John the Baptist introduces Christ as the Bridegroom (John 3:26-30); see also: Revelation 19:6-8 and 21:1-3... this metaphor is not new though... in the Old Testament we find Yahweh speaking of Israel as His bride, this would of course make Him the Bridegroom! Yet, since the Father and the Son are One (John 10:30), there is no contradiction in both the Father and the Son being the Bridegroom! God Bless! Angel |

200 | We ran from a major city. | Acts | JCrichton | 148461
Hi, Gospel! Perhaps you are referring to Acts 19:22 through 20:5: 22He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer. The Riot in Ephesus 23About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. 24A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in no little business for the craftsmen. 25He called them together, along with the workmen in related trades, and said: “Men, you know we receive a good income from this business. 26And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that manmade gods are no gods at all. 27There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.” 28When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia, and rushed as one man into the theater. 30Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. 31Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater. 32The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33The Jews pushed Alexander to the front, and some of the crowd shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 35The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Men of Ephesus, doesn't all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to be quiet and not do anything rash. 37You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. 38If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. 39If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today's events. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly. Acts 20 Through Macedonia and Greece 1When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples and, after encouraging them, said goodby and set out for Macedonia. 2He traveled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people, and finally arrived in Greece, 3where he stayed three months. Because the Jews made a plot against him just as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia. 4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy also, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia. 5These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas. God Bless! Angel |
