Angelface, 1 Cor 3:9 9For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. NAS 1 Cor 3:16-17 16Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. 182 | Is it a sin to be in debt? | NT general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 71058
Martha, The love of money is A root of all sorts of evil, but not the commonly misquoted "root of ALL evil". 1 Tim 6:10 10For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang. NAS It is fine to use credit, but you must be aware of your limits. Do not forget that you are to set aside as you may prosper. This does not mean to save if you have anything left over at the end of the month, but to set aside each week some portion of the income you receive. AO |

183 | Are tongues a world language or not? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 71010
I whole hearted agree that God is not the author of confusion and that is why I urge you to re-examine Acts chapters 1 and 2. The 120 could not have received the gift of tongues, as you claim, otherwise it would have been sheer confusion! The "all" refers to "all of the apostles. Verses Acts 1:26 through Acts 2:15 and Acts 2:43 apply. The last verse of Acts chapter 1 is speaking of the Apostles. Acts 2:1 continues to speak of the Apostles when it says "they were all together in one place". In verse Acts 2:3 the "tongues as of fire..rested on each one of them", again referring to the Apostles. Acts 2:7 also mentions that those who heard them speak in tongues "were amazed and marveled, saying, "Why are not all these who are speaking Galileans?". Not all of the disciples were Galilean and only the Apostles received the Holy Spirit in this way, thus Acts 2:7. Is this helpful? AO |

If you read Acts chapters 1 and 2 carefully, the accounting of the 120 disciples and the Apostle's receiving the gift of tongues are separate instances. The tongues heard by those visiting Jerusalem were those of the 12. The 120 may have received the tongues after they were baptized, but not at the same time as the Apostles. AO |

186 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70821
Steve, For clarification,we are talking about healings ordained by God. The question is: Does the NT give any examples of these as not being successful? If it does not mention any, then why? What does a healer and a healee (forgive my terminology) need for efective healing to occur? AO |
||||||
187 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70776
Steve, Requests for healing being denied would be quite significant, would they not? All sin is equal in God's eyes, so there is no logical reason for scripture to address a person's occupation with regard to their salvation. There would be a need to demonstrate the withholding of healing, however, if it was conditional upon who asked or how they asked. If the silence argument were to be valid, it would need to be in alignment with the nature of God. The fulfillment of the Old Covenant was an event that required miracles to confirm the validity of the change. Withholding those miracles would have been inconsistent with His purpose and contrary to His Word. Additionally, and back to our original discussion, the silence position does not explain why miraculous healing can not be conducted with 100 percent success today. Are sick children in our hospitals in the same basket as an "imagined Pharisee" demanding healing as a sign? Let's reason together and look at scripture logically. From that framework, continued miraculous gifts do not exist today and can only be weakly supported by adding to scripture. Their purpose was fulfilled with the arrival of the written word. P. S. I am short on time, but will put some more thought to the validity question you pose at a later date. AO |

Mark 12:28-31 28And one of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?" 29Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; 30and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' 190 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70754
Steve, If God desires all to come to the knowledge of the truth, but knows that most will not, where is the contradiction? Christians walk by faith, not by sight. He expects those that follow Christ to do so not because of miracles, but through the evidences He has left us in His word. Just because the entire world population is not Christian does not mean they do not already acknowledge God's word as the truth. Many will never acknowledge it, even if you or I were to interpret each other's tongues or healed their friend's and family of grave illnesses. God still hopes that they would be saved, but He knows that most will not. Regardless, He does not withhold salvation from anyone who loves Him. His word is available to anyone who desires it on this Earth. All they must do is ask for help. Regarding healing, let’s take a look again at one of the verses found in the NT: Acts 5:16 16And also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits; and most were being healed. NAS Wait a minute!!!!! Actually, please forgive my literary license. It actually reads: Acts 5:16 16And also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits; and they were all being healed. NAS Regardless of the translation, the language is very clear; everyone, who came to be healed, was healed. There were no exceptions, at least not that I have found. If you know of something I have missed, please let me know! Hope you're having a great Christmas, AO |

191 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70711
Steve, God's Word has gone into all the earth, yet still many disbelieve. God's hope is for all to be saved, yet most will not seek Him. As for healing,we absolutely know that there was 100 percent sucess. Here are but two of many examples: Matt 8:16-17 16And when evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill NAS Acts 5:16 16And also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits; and they were all being healed. NAS All those that were brought before Jesus or the Apostles were healed. If miraculoous gifts exist today, should not those who have this ability perform the same deeds as the 1st century church? AO |

Derek, The miraculous gifts were established for what purpose? Was it not to confirm the validity of God's Word? Once it was obvious throughout the world that His word was the truth, there was no need for the confirmation. Thus we see even Paul's ability to use the gifts wane until they were no more. The "partial" that he mentions to the Corinthians is the need of these gifts to accompany and thereby confirm God's Word until the written form of God's Word was in place. That is "the perfect" and is, of course, here today. Complete, perfect and unchanging in every detail. As an aside, if tongues or healing existed today there would be 100 percent sucess in curing the sick and all tongues could be validated as an intelligable language. Even if we go with the suggestion that the "tongues of angels" in 1 Co 13:1, is a language unknown to man, Paul still commands that they not be spoken publically (1 Co 14:28) if there is no interpreter. This likely was a safeguard against those in the body who did not truely have the gift of tongues, but felt compelled to display it. To falsify the gift and bring others into their sin would corrupt the body, thus Paul directed it only be done in private. How someone desires to worship God in private is upon their own head. This was always the case in the NT and remains so today. AO |

193 | is there security of the believer | Rom 8:39 | Aspiring Overseer | 68424
Joe, These are the verses we are discussing: John 15:1-2 15:1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2"Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. 194 | is there security of the believer | Rom 8:39 | Aspiring Overseer | 68358
NKA, I am sure you are familiar with John chapter 15, where Jesus teaches His disciples about the kingdom of heaven. It reads: John 15:1-2 15:1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2"Every branch in Me (in Christ) that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes (disciplines) it, that it may bear more fruit. If people wish to be part of the "true vine" they must be "in Christ", that is to be covered by the atoning sacrifice of His blood, as I am sure you agree. Pay close attention to what is said next, however; those branches already "in Christ", who do not bear fruit, are taken away! These branches (Christians) were "in Christ" (i.e. saved and having full knowledge of the goodness of God) yet they did not bear fruit and thus lost their salvation! Why did they bear no fruit? Is not God able to perform all the works necessary? If God were to ensure our salvation regardless of our effort, then this chapter, and many others, are foolishness. Of course, they are not, so from the perspective of an independent thinker in Scripture; which I trust, you are; this requires careful consideration. We can either trust in what others say about Scripture or research it for ourselves. Agreed? John 15:8 8 By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. NAS Christians must put forth the effort to prove themselves as Christ’s disciples. AO |

195 | is there security of the believer | Rom 8:39 | Aspiring Overseer | 68266
Can salvation be lost? Heb 2:1 2:1For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. NAS Heb 3:12 12Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. NAS 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS Heb 10:26-29 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? NAS Heb 10:32-36 32But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, 33partly, by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. 34For you showed sympathy to the prisoners, and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. NAS Finally, Jude 5-6 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Beginning with the Nation of Israel, Jude gives example after example of those who had been "saved" by God (in the O.T.), only to ultimately "lose their salvation." This warning he gave to N.T. believers, lest they should wind up in a similar shape. AO |

196 | WHAT IS MEANT IN VERSES IN 2COR.4:7-9? | 2 Cor 4:9 | Aspiring Overseer | 68264
Paul stresses the earthly body of a Christian is inconsequential to the spiritual. He also highlights that a Christian's effectiveness as a teacher will not be attributed to their physical situation, but to the singular greatness of God's master plan. In no way could anyone say that Paul, or any of the evangelists, were persausive due to a lack of worldly concerns. Rather, they were persausive, because of their preaching of God's word, in spite of these concerns. Thus the power of God's word stood on its own merit. In fact, Christians are likely to suffer more difficulties than non-christians as God prepares them to be experienced teachers. AO |

197 | Is the Work of Christ Sufficient? | Rom 6:23 | Aspiring Overseer | 68263
The attribute of Faith is having complete trust, confidence, reliance and loyalty in God. Faith is shown by a person’s willful obedience to God’s law and is not the simple belief that God’s law exists without need of any future consideration. To have faith means you act upon your belief! We understand God’s word is truth and that we live under a New Covenant. What is our obligation under that covenant? Why is the Law of Faith one that calls for action rather than passivity? Why is faith in God always associated with work? What is Faith? - See He 11:1-2 –Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval... -Faith is the unquestioning belief that underlies a person’s response to a duty or obligation. Each of the many examples of Hebrews demonstrate how God’s people of the Old Covenant proved their trust in God. -“the men of old gained approval” through their righteous actions: -Abel offered a better sacrifice v. 4 -Enoch walked with God, because God found him “pleasing” (v. 5) -Noah built the ark (v. 7) What is belief? - Belief is defined by Webster’s’ New World dictionary as “to take as true”. To believe something as true does not automatically lead to action. JA 2:19 (….the demons also believe and shudder.) -Cain believed his sacrifice was as good as Abel’s, etc. What separates us from Demons? -Faith. Christians are called to be faithful to fulfill our obligation to God. See Col 1:1-29 Where does faith come from? -From hearing the word of God. See Ro10:17, but also above. Why is this important? -The world preaches, “all you must do is believe and you’ll be saved. No action is necessary. Work was required in the past, but no longer”. Numerous passages throughout the N.T., however, speak of the action God commands of a Christian as proof of their faith. -Rom 12:1-2 12:1 I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. NAS James 1:21-22 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. NAS How do we know faith involves more than simple belief? 1) It is empirically true: From a person’s own experience and observation we know faith defines an absolute conviction where belief is passive. We believe the airplane is safe, but it is our faith in its airworthiness that allows us to fly from Seattle to NY, thus proving our belief. 2) By example, O.T. faith in God was proven by deeds. He 11:1-2 3) By N.T. command, Christians are called to action. -Ph2:12-15 (work out your salvation) - JA 2:14 (what use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith..) Why are Christians to be faithful? -Faithfulness equals obedience. See Jo14:21-24 -What is God’s law? Can it be found anywhere besides the N.T.? Scripture, or the Bible, is a reference manual for God’s people that teaches, and at the same time, demonstrates that only Christians will be saved! God’s word is truth (Jo 17:17) and all inclusive (i. e. there are no other routes to eternal life!) As our creator, he has made a covenant with us, or agreement. We must obey our part of the covenant if we are to expect our reward. |

198 | I won"t be saved if I don't tithe | 2 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 63329
Do not worry as Christians are not commanded to tithe. Unless you are a practicing Jew, your sole obligation in this regard is to put aside and save, as you may prosper (1 Co 16:2). Keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. AO |

199 | PRECISELY, what is the new covenant | Heb 9:1 | Aspiring Overseer | 58128
A basic tenement of contract law is that both parties must perform according to the contract. If one party does not, the other party is not obligated to perform their part of the agreement. God is the contractor; man is the contractee. His contract to those who believe is straightforward. If they obey His commandments (the terms of the new contract) He will reward them with eternal spiritual life in heaven. His requirements include worshiping God in assembly, in your personal life and obeying the Law of Grace. If man does not fulfill his duties of the contract, God will not give the reward. Additionally, man must ask God for help in understanding the requirements of the contract, otherwise there is no way for man to fulfill them. Without proper understanding, man can not benefit from the contract and heaven is not an option. Is legalism wrong? Was Jesus a legalist? We know He was and, that God is, very specific in what He expects from us as sons. Yes, salvation is a free gift in that there was nothing we could do to cause God to send His son as the blood sacrifice for our PAST sins, but we must not mock God by teaching there are no deeds necessary to maintain that salvation. The ability to contact the blood of Christ is free; the ability to continue in contact with that blood is not. |
