Hi, Joel! Here's a segment from an on-line encyclopedia (www.bartleby.com); it explains the general origins of the Bible from a secular perspective... it includes reasons for the various versions of the Bible and it points to specific time frames as to when the changes occurred: The Books of the Old Testament Among contemporary Christians, the Roman Catholic Church recognizes as deuterocanonical several books that are consigned to the Old Testament Apocrypha by most Protestant bodies, whose canon conforms to that of the contemporary Hebrew Bible. There the books follow the order of the Palestinian Hebrew canon, which appears to have been adopted by c.A.D. 100, although most of the books had clearly received canonical status well before this time. The order is as follows: (1) the Torah or Law, the five books of the Pentateuch, i.e., Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy; (2) the Prophets, consisting of Joshua, Judges, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve (or Minor) Prophets; (3) the Writings (Hagiographa), a heterogeneous group to which belong (a) Psalms, Proverbs, and Job, (b) the Scrolls (Megillot), consisting of the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs), Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, and (c) Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and First and Second Chronicles. 2 The number of Old Testament books (not counting the Apocrypha) stands at 39; in the Hebrew Bible they are usually counted as 24. The discrepancy occurs because Ezra and Nehemiah are counted as one book, as are each of the following—First and Second Kings; First and Second Chronicles; and the 12 Prophets (Hosea through Malachi). Sometimes Judges and Ruth are also conflated, as are Jeremiah and Lamentations, making for 22 books, the number attested by Josephus (c.A.D. 36–A.D. 96). 3 Versions of the Old Testament The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, with a small portion in Aramaic (parts of the books of Daniel, Ezra, and Jeremiah). The text of the Hebrew Bible (called the Masoretic text, see Masora) had been standardized by the 10th cent. A.D., but the only existing Hebrew texts of biblical books before this time have been found at Qumran (see Dead Sea Scrolls). The origin of the Masoretic version is unknown. 4 The original Old Testament canon was the Septuagint, long used in the Greek-speaking church and still retained by the Orthodox churches. This Hellenistic Jewish translation originated with the translation of the Pentateuch in the mid-3d cent. B.C. Later translations were made from it or patterned after it. The canon of the Septuagint included the books of the later Hebrew canon, with the addition of several others, most of which were those now reckoned deuterocanonical by Roman Catholics and apocryphal by Protestants. Dispute over the canonicity of these books has its source in the Latin Bible, which found its official form in the Vulgate, the work of St. Jerome; this largely agreed with the list of books of the Septuagint, and the list and order of the Vulgate was the canon accepted by the Western Church of the Middle Ages. 5 At the Reformation, Protestant bodies withdrew recognition of the canonicity of those portions of the Old Testament that appeared in the Vulgate but not in the Masoretic canon, although the English church considered them (i.e., the deuterocanonical books) suitable for instruction and edification, but not for establishing or confirming doctrine. To set these books clearly apart, the translators who produced the Authorized Version (see Bible) assembled them in the Apocrypha as an appendix to the Old Testament. Thus the Protestant canon became exactly like the Masoretic, except that it retained the order of the books as they appeared in the Vulgate. 183 | Be content | 1 Tim 6:9 | JCrichton | 137879
Hi, Nakia! I think that you are confusing two terms... True God demands that we become active servants (as the parable of the coins--Matthew 25:14-30); yet it is not material wealth that He demands that we engage in acquiring! (Matthew 6:19-21) Paul commends himself when he preached during his mission at Corinth (1 Corinthians 9:3-23) and he warns that those who do not work should not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:6-15)... Yet, neither Jesus nor Paul is saying that if a person does not strive to be wealthy (material gains) he/she is not a disciple... in the case of Jesus, He is speaking in terms of spiritual gain; in the case of Paul, he is speaking against freeloaders, who were like leeches sucking the life out of the early Church (where the Christian community deposited their individual goods for the communal distribution), and the "preachers" that would make evangelization a for-profit enterprise... There are people on Public Service because their health or their particular situation impedes them from getting gainful employment--they do not cease to be children of God... conversely, there are wealthy people who live wretched lives because they reject God's Authority or because they judge themselves more spiritual than those who cannot afford their lifestyles... Jesus made it a point that God sees the content of the heart rather than the outward appearance! (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 18:9-14) Build yourself up in the Lord and build those around you... this is where God demands that you and I (all Christians) excel, all of the times! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Glenn! One other thing they forget... historically a nation or government that won a war/s would retain the land conquered/acquired during the military campaign; yet when the people of Israel were surrounded by the various Arab nations that warred against them and they obliterated the Arab militaries… it was, through UN intervention, Israel that was forced to cede the territories they conquered back to those who lost the war! No wonder Arabs hate Israelites: they attempted to exterminate them from the face of the earth and got their rear-ends kicked! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, mdenard! As with much of undocumented history, most offers are "educated" guesses... some offer plausible arguments... others simply resort to today's political maneuvering: place the opponent on negative light and let popular vote run its course! What is important is that God loved us so that He sent His Only Begotten Son to free is from sin's imminent destruction: spiritual death! (John 3:16; 1:9-14) God Bless! Angel |

186 | My husband Left, Can I divorce? | Matt 19:9 | JCrichton | 137874
Hi, SHAE! As Doc said this is not an Advice Forum... we can only offer Scriture... Jesus made it quite clear that marriage is not a state of convenience but a relationship in God (Matthew 19:3-9); only adultery/fornication by one of the spouses can cause that relationship to be nulled. Since I do not know your personal situation I can only offer that you pray on it before making any decision... however, I can offer that: Jesus did not say a woman must uphold the marital relationship while the husban goes about engaging in new/old relationships; the command is binding on both spouses, as is the dissolution of the marriage. I warn you though, if you do not divorce your husband: a) You cannot retaliate by having extramarital affairs--Jesus calls that adultery! b) You cannot hold your husband's past (to the date when you receive him back) extramarital relations against him--to forgive means to exonerate (remove from accountability), you cannot forgive partially! c) Set rules and boundaries--it you do not demand respect, it is likely that he will do it again! d) Do not use your children as excuse/bargaining chips--forcing your husband to stay in a marriage he does not respect will not assure that he will love your children any better; using your children to hold the relationship together will only burden your children with a responsibility that is not their's; poisoning the mind of the children against your husband--if you do not get him back--will only destroy all Christian love and value (both in your heart and theirs). God Bless! Angel |

187 | Love sinner Hate sin ? | Ps 5:5 | JCrichton | 137818
Hi, Mlabus! As much as the forbidden fruit being an apple! As much as some of the prophets speaking about a "close encounter" with a spaceship! As much as that ole ruse that God helps those who help themselves! As much as the misconception that we are all God's children! Many times what has transpired is that Scripture has been misquoted (i.e.: the root of evil being money--not so, according to Scripture it is the love of money that is the root of evil)... There are Scriptural passages that lend themselves to the origination of your stated query: ...for God so loved the world (John 3:16) or Luke 9:56 or Ezekiel or John 12:47... These statements are not too far from the Truth: Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die... (John 11:25-26) God Bless! Angel |

188 | why would God allow his son to die fo us | John 3:16 | JCrichton | 137817
Hi, Shael! There are many people who are knowledgeable of Scripture yet they reject God's Authority--they prefer to serve their own appetites, even when their actions causes them damage, irreparable at times! Your lady coworker seems to be a profound advocate for pro-life! You've gotten some excellent replies... I simply want to add a passage which speaks on Jesus' function as both Priest and Sacrifice: The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing. This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings--external regulations applying until the time of the new order. When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep." In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. (Hebrews 9:8-28) I will pray that the Holy Spirit aides your ministering to your coworker! God Bless! Angel |

189 | Praising and Satan Fleeing?? | Ps 22:3 | JCrichton | 137750
Hi, Lissa! Praising the Lord is powerful... but I liken just saying the words or singing a song/psalm or quoting Scipture devoid of Faith and submission to God's Authority as a non-believer holding a cross in front of Count Dracula (yes I know he is a fictitious character from a book which later was made into a movie, and later still into even more movies...); yet the premise is the same: If we claim to be children of the Light we must walk in the Light in order for that claim to be effective! (1 John 1:5-7; 2 John 2:9-11) But to rely on some sort of shortcut or formula that compels God to protect us or that bounds Satan from doing any harm is to play with fire--no matter how well-intended we will get burnt! Jesus said that not all who call Him "Lord" will enter into the Kingdom (Matthew 7:21-23 and Luke 6:46); we are Commanded to abide in Him (John 15:5-6) so that He may abide in us! James tells us that the prayer of Faith can do anything (James 5:15-18)... so calling on the Lord can cause Satan to flee from us... but only if we are abiding in Him!: There is nothing I cannot do in the One who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13) God Bless! Angel |

190 | Birth of Jesus stable or cave? 3/30 magi | Luke 2:7 | JCrichton | 137749
Hi, Kiwibelle! My understanding is that caves were used as stables for Winter refuge of barn animals... The Bible is specific about the shepherds seeing finding the newly born babe in the manger (these shepherds were local); while the magi (which I suspect are thought of as three due to the offering to baby Jesus: gold, myrrh and frankincense) were foreigners, traveling great distances to witness the Birth of the King of the Jews! See: Luke 2:1-40 and Matthew 1:18 through 2:18--again, these particular Scriptural passages offer no conclusive statements as to the number of the magi, the exact location of the manger (barn-like building or cave) or the exact age of Jesus when the magi visited and when the Holy Family fled to Egypt. 191 | Forgive only when sin is confessed? | Luke 23:34 | JCrichton | 137748
Hi, LipstickGirl! Forgiveness is a complex subject... normally people who wrong others are filled with guilt (if they own a conscience) and refuse to admit their error... it takes a very strong individual to come forward and admit their wrong doings... In the secular world--I speak from the North American perspective--it has become an art form not to own up to our trespasses... someone somewhere even coined the ultimate phrase that allows for total unaccountability: "my bad!" This phrase removes even the superficial "sorry" that so many had employed--a term so devoid of sincerity that it has been used as a shield against accountability... "I said I was sorry!" Contrary to the popular guilt-free culture, Christ demands accountability: 'For I tell you, if your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 5:20) Jesus is not interested in what the world says or does... He is intrested in what His disciples do or refrain from doing... Matthew 6:12, 14-15, is a clear example of Jesus' Command on forgiveness... True some would say that a person that does not seek forgiveness is unwilling to recognize that he/she is at fault and that person will benefit very little from our selfless act of forgiven them in spite of their refusal to come to terms with their trespass... God does not see it that way...He expects us to forgive those who tresspass against us whether they acknowledge their error or not... for a Christian, forgiveness is not a matter of pride (hurt) but a matter of obedience to the Father! We are called to emulate the Father who allows the sun (Son) to shine both on the righteous (His servants--made into righteousness by Him) and the unrighteous (all who reject God's Authority) (Matthew 5:45, 48)... this is Jesus' term: "... as we forgive those who trespass against us." To drive this point home, Jesus offered this teaching: So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. (Matthew 5:23-24) Clearly, forgiveness is not a matter of "getting satisfaction" or vindication... forgiveness is a matter of staying in God's Grace: of being merciful with others as a reflection of our heritage: "Be holy for I am Holy!" (1 Peter 1:16) God Bless! Angel |

192 | Where Does It Talk About Same Sex Marr | Rom 1:26 | JCrichton | 137477
Hi, Jets! There is no Scriptural passage that deals with same sex marriages as any homosexual activity is deemed an abomination by God! There is, however, admonishions against such practices as attested by Romans 1:26-27--you can read Paul's discourse on the matter of willful disobedience of God's Authority in Romans 1:18-31. 195 | Why so silent? | John 21:25 | JCrichton | 137213
Hi, Robb! As Doc pointed it out... it has to do with Christ's Mission... being God Jesus did not have to be baptized by John, but, as the Lamb of God, He had to fulfill every obligation of the Law (Matthew 3:13-16)... till Jesus reached the age stipulated by the Law there was nothing for Him to do otherwise He would be playing to Satan's game (Matthew 4:1-11)... we understand from Scripture that Jesus had gathered the disciples but had not performed any astonishing miracles... when prompted by Mary, His Mother, to resolve the wine problem at the wedding of Cana, Jesus expressly stated that His time (hour) had not yet arraived! (John 2:1-11)... through this latter passage (as well as the passages dealing with his birth, infancy and childhood) we can infer that Jesus was aware of a specific time schedule set at the very beginning of God's Salvation Plan (Genesis 3:15)... Scripture dealing with Jesus' ordinary life (as the son of a man named Joseph who was a carpenter) has no bearings with Salvation--the sole purpose for the incarnation of the Word! God Bless! Angel |

196 | The laws of the bible in todays world | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 137212
Hi, Juls! I know that it is hard to ignore a "friend's" request for enlightenment... the reply to ignore the letter is correct in as much as a non-believer, atheist, or any other person who by definition is anti-Christian would totally ignore any Truth that the Bible has to offer... They are not ignorant of Scripture, as the letter attests... they simply choose to reject God's Authority and serve the creature (themselves or others who play god) rather than the Creator... You made one strong statement at the beginning of your post: "I admit I do not have vast knowledge base with the bible." This could very well be your personal "WAKE UP!" call from Jesus, telling you to be a doer of the Word not just a hearer... it is your responsibility as a Christian to involve yourself in Christ's Doctrine... you cannot do so through a third party's ballot--you yourself must study Scripture and you must establish a personal relationship with Christ! Using a Bible and a concordance dictionary (both provided on-line by various Christian groups) dissect that letter... but do it for yourself not for your "friend's" benefit! Point of reference: Remind your "friend" that there were Mosaic Laws given to the people of Israel to keep them from emulating the debauchery and theologies of the pagan nations around them... also explain to your "friend" that some of the Mosaic Laws were retained because they deal directly with worship or morality--the state in which a servant of God must remain in order to be God's servant... Jesus incarnation, death and resurrection brought changes into the world which affected the Mosaic Laws... Jesus' Doctrine not only offered changes but perfected God's Commandments which were being circumvented by Israel--such is our spiritual state today... people like your "friend" concerned more with their own moralism than with submitting themselves to God's Authority! If you trully want to help your "friend" out of that rut and disbelief... you must first nurish your spirit (prayer and study of Scripture) right before engaging him/her on the topics on his/her letter or any other spiritual matter. God Bless! Angel |

197 | salvation | Matt 10:22 | JCrichton | 137211
Hi, Brife! There are many Scriptures where we are warned that we, on our own will have nothing... Jesus is very pecular about who can be His disciples and who can be saved: Luke 14:26, 27, 33; John 8:31; 13:35; 15:8; Matthew 7:21-27; Luke 6:46; John 1:9-13; 3:16-21 "I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. Those who do not remain in me are thrown out like a branch and dry up; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, where they are burned. (John 15:5-6) As Jesus said in Luke 6:46, it is not about claiming salvation (Lord, Lord!)... it is about abiding (living) in Him and Him in us! If the branch does not remain on the vine, it will be removed and cast into the fire! God Bless! Angel |

199 | Jesus is always the same | Heb 13:8 | JCrichton | 137088
Hi, Noveta! Recognizing that God does not change does not limit God to our finite understanding of "same attribute!" We find that Jesus and the Father are One (John 10:30)... that the Father lives in the Son and that the Son lives in the Father (John 10:38)... we also find that God is Spirit (John 4:24)... that He is transcendent (2 Peter 3:8)... that He is Omniscient (John 16:30)... that He is Eternal (Revelation 4:9)... But we find too... that He is everywhere (Omnipresent) (Ephisians 1:23) and that everything that exists was given form by Him (Colossenses 1:16)... Additionally, we know that He can appear to His servants in any form (walking in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8); as pillar of fire and smoke (Exodus 13:21); as a man (Genesis 18:1-33); as a Rock which gave water to Israel (1 Corinthians 10:4); as a dove (Mark 1:10); as a Lamb (Revelatin 5:6-11); again as a man (Philippians 2:6-7; John 1:14) and finally as a glorified man who can be everywhere at once and can overpower the senses and can materialize in the middle of a locked room (John 20:11 thru 21:14; Acts 1:1-3)... Regardless of Jesus' exterior it is clear that Satan and his minions (spiritual beings) recognized Him immediately as they came into His presence: God (His Spiritual Essence) does not change! God Bless! Angel |
