Hi, Juls! I know that it is hard to ignore a "friend's" request for enlightenment... the reply to ignore the letter is correct in as much as a non-believer, atheist, or any other person who by definition is anti-Christian would totally ignore any Truth that the Bible has to offer... They are not ignorant of Scripture, as the letter attests... they simply choose to reject God's Authority and serve the creature (themselves or others who play god) rather than the Creator... You made one strong statement at the beginning of your post: "I admit I do not have vast knowledge base with the bible." This could very well be your personal "WAKE UP!" call from Jesus, telling you to be a doer of the Word not just a hearer... it is your responsibility as a Christian to involve yourself in Christ's Doctrine... you cannot do so through a third party's ballot--you yourself must study Scripture and you must establish a personal relationship with Christ! Using a Bible and a concordance dictionary (both provided on-line by various Christian groups) dissect that letter... but do it for yourself not for your "friend's" benefit! Point of reference: Remind your "friend" that there were Mosaic Laws given to the people of Israel to keep them from emulating the debauchery and theologies of the pagan nations around them... also explain to your "friend" that some of the Mosaic Laws were retained because they deal directly with worship or morality--the state in which a servant of God must remain in order to be God's servant... Jesus incarnation, death and resurrection brought changes into the world which affected the Mosaic Laws... Jesus' Doctrine not only offered changes but perfected God's Commandments which were being circumvented by Israel--such is our spiritual state today... people like your "friend" concerned more with their own moralism than with submitting themselves to God's Authority! If you trully want to help your "friend" out of that rut and disbelief... you must first nurish your spirit (prayer and study of Scripture) right before engaging him/her on the topics on his/her letter or any other spiritual matter. God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Hank! Thank you for your words of encouragement... I too have felt those moments of discoragement and following various threads contributed to by you and others have bolster my spirit and confirmed that Christ's Word is still alive today! Thank you again for your kind words... I do have a little clarification... though my name is not a typical male name in the US... I am one of very few guys that have it! (I say one of the few because, with the exception of two acquaintances I had (French and Italian), I've not met any other guys with this name--well aside from the televesion Angel (the vampire with a soul). Hi, Joel! Here's a segment from an on-line encyclopedia (www.bartleby.com); it explains the general origins of the Bible from a secular perspective... it includes reasons for the various versions of the Bible and it points to specific time frames as to when the changes occurred: The Books of the Old Testament Among contemporary Christians, the Roman Catholic Church recognizes as deuterocanonical several books that are consigned to the Old Testament Apocrypha by most Protestant bodies, whose canon conforms to that of the contemporary Hebrew Bible. There the books follow the order of the Palestinian Hebrew canon, which appears to have been adopted by c.A.D. 100, although most of the books had clearly received canonical status well before this time. The order is as follows: (1) the Torah or Law, the five books of the Pentateuch, i.e., Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy; (2) the Prophets, consisting of Joshua, Judges, First and Second Samuel, First and Second Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve (or Minor) Prophets; (3) the Writings (Hagiographa), a heterogeneous group to which belong (a) Psalms, Proverbs, and Job, (b) the Scrolls (Megillot), consisting of the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs), Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, and (c) Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and First and Second Chronicles. 2 The number of Old Testament books (not counting the Apocrypha) stands at 39; in the Hebrew Bible they are usually counted as 24. The discrepancy occurs because Ezra and Nehemiah are counted as one book, as are each of the following—First and Second Kings; First and Second Chronicles; and the 12 Prophets (Hosea through Malachi). Sometimes Judges and Ruth are also conflated, as are Jeremiah and Lamentations, making for 22 books, the number attested by Josephus (c.A.D. 36–A.D. 96). 3 Versions of the Old Testament The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, with a small portion in Aramaic (parts of the books of Daniel, Ezra, and Jeremiah). The text of the Hebrew Bible (called the Masoretic text, see Masora) had been standardized by the 10th cent. A.D., but the only existing Hebrew texts of biblical books before this time have been found at Qumran (see Dead Sea Scrolls). The origin of the Masoretic version is unknown. 4 The original Old Testament canon was the Septuagint, long used in the Greek-speaking church and still retained by the Orthodox churches. This Hellenistic Jewish translation originated with the translation of the Pentateuch in the mid-3d cent. B.C. Later translations were made from it or patterned after it. The canon of the Septuagint included the books of the later Hebrew canon, with the addition of several others, most of which were those now reckoned deuterocanonical by Roman Catholics and apocryphal by Protestants. Dispute over the canonicity of these books has its source in the Latin Bible, which found its official form in the Vulgate, the work of St. Jerome; this largely agreed with the list of books of the Septuagint, and the list and order of the Vulgate was the canon accepted by the Western Church of the Middle Ages. 5 At the Reformation, Protestant bodies withdrew recognition of the canonicity of those portions of the Old Testament that appeared in the Vulgate but not in the Masoretic canon, although the English church considered them (i.e., the deuterocanonical books) suitable for instruction and edification, but not for establishing or confirming doctrine. To set these books clearly apart, the translators who produced the Authorized Version (see Bible) assembled them in the Apocrypha as an appendix to the Old Testament. Thus the Protestant canon became exactly like the Masoretic, except that it retained the order of the books as they appeared in the Vulgate. For a Catholic perspective check www.ewtn.org (on-line Bible, encyclopedia, catechism and other resources). God Bless! Angel |

Hi, deuce! I've yet to find a passage in the Bible that speaks against gambling... there are passages that do speak on how certain decisions were made by the use of some sort of "luck of the draw" type of determination... as a matter of fact the replacement for Judas was selected by drawing lots! Gambling, like most things in life, if done in moderation and in God's Will, have no ill effect on our spiritual life... it is much as the old rule of thumb ("love of money")... if we replace God or act in a manner that is harmful to us or to others, even falling in love with our "soul" mate can be detrimental to our spiritual wellbeing... One word of caution... could you use a different screen name? deuce sounds very much like gambling could be an integral part of your dialy life (deuces wild)... On your second point... the Bible does speak on how God allows the wicked to amass fortunes that they will never enjoy; though I would not categorize all of the people involved in the tennessee lotto games as wicked... I do suspect that the wicked do become entrenched in "get rich quick schemes;" the difference between them and Christians is that they do not believe that they have to answer to God for any of their actions; while the Christian's actions must be dictated by God's Word. I believe that the only way that you should reject a college grant from the lotto agency is if there is proof that they are soliciting illigal gains (drug, prostitution, contraband...) or that they are directly responsible for causing people to become addicted to gambling in order to provide the grants' moneys. God Bless! Angel |

"Do unto others as they would want you to do unto them." Hi, Shankara! This rule of course applies within Christ's own Mandates...doing onto others in the Lord our God... There is of course a whole subculture, which is endemic world over, that subscribes to a partial acceptance of that rule... these people are not looking to serve God but to serve themselves and the doing on to others is only exercised when they have something to gain... As you said, morality in the secular term is subjective... today more and more we come to witness that immorality is more the actual norm by which all people are judging themselves and others... outside of Christ's Commandments there is no real morality... when we transgress God's Commandments we are violating Christ's teachings and every good value... there was a time in the US when children chose to emulate only the heroes and heroines of legends and television programs or movies... today, they are urged (both by their parents and merchants) to choose the wicked representations of humanity (monsters, evildoers, prostitutes, pimps...)--to God, relative morality does not count as obedience and worship! Though there are situations which blur God's morality and the world's (such as the question stated on this thread), how Christians accept or reject the wrong values being offered as equitable Christian virtues will determine the true separation of Church and State or the integration of State sponsored values into the Christian culture! Murder is wrong! But this is not because it is a violation of a cross-cultural dictum, but because it is a violation of God's Commandment not to kill! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Malcom777! When Scripture speaks of leaving everything for Jesus Christ... it means just that! The twelve disciples, as well as some others, left their families, jobs, friends, towns, etc... in order to walk with Jesus... those who are called to serve the Lord must be willing to do the same... yet, not eveybody is called to minister to the world... and not all who give up things/people do it for the Lord... How is it that you gave up your family, job, etc. for the Lord... are you a volunteer minister, preacher, evengelist...? "during the alpha course i somehow commited an eternal sin by swearing against the Holy spirit (was not planned)" Are you saying that you no longer believe in Jesus Christ or that you doubt His Power? Are you rejecting the Holy Spirit as God? Are you rejecting His Power to teach you and Save you? By asking/telling God to kill you you are provoking His anger... but more dangerous than that, you are rejecting His gift of life--in essence, you are saying that you know better than God... remember the parable of the coins? You have to work with whatever you have! Do you believe that God has the power to protect you from evil? Do you believe that God is stronger than Satan? Do you believe that Jesus died for you: to save you from yourself and from the powers of sin? God does not want you to perish! Jesus came to rescue all who humbly believe in Him from eternal damnation and no amount of stupidity, sin, ignorance, or any other limitations can void Christ's Sacrifice on the Cross! In Him you are free from the wages of sin! Let Him use you! Repent from your prideful behavior! Reject Satan and all the doubt that he has placed in your path! Get closer to God, serving willingly and humbly and He will get closer to you! There are many on-line Bible Study Groups, join as many as you are able; search the Scripture for answers; stay in a prayerful disposition every day, and every hour of the day! Remember that your battle is not as simple as it seems... your struggle is with spiritual principalities (Satan and his minions) and you yourself are not strong enough to face them; seek Jesus! Make Bible Study your dialy task! Ask the Holy Spirit for enlightenment and patience... remember James words... be slow to speak and slower even to anger! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Malcom! I read through your posts... I understand your concern... God does not play games with our spiritual life/aspirations... I think that the problem lies in our inability to trust God and our low capacity for patience! We go to God with preconceived ideas and expect a clear response that agrees with our mindset! Have you ever watched an episode of "The Simpson’s" (adult cartoons on channel 5--eastern US)? The writers set is up in much the same television pop-culture where everything goes and during the last few lines the characters iron-out all problems... well... God is not like that! It is He who determines where and how we are to serve Him! It is He who determines who is enlightened and how deeply! It is He who determines how and when to use us and the Gift/s granted to us by the Holy Spirit! Remember Cain and Abel? They both served God, yet Abel served God with the best at his disposal while Cain was content with serving any way he chose! We cannot coerce/goat God into doing things our way... we can only serve Him in patience and humility awaiting, as the Remnant did, for the revelation of the Messiah! We have an advantage that the Remnant did not have: we have Jesus' biography: the Gospels. And we have the rest of the writings from the Old Testament to the New! Place Satan out of your mind--do not fear those who can only take your life! Patiently and humbly establish that beautiful relationship that you want to have with our Lord... the Holy Spirit will guide you... but only if you surrender yourself to God... remember He exalts the humble! (James 4:10) Read the Holy Scripture in an effort not to find God somewhere in some away place... search for Him in you, in your immediate surroundings... He is not far from you--just a humble and obedient prayer away! ...in reference to your observation about Jesus telling us that where two or three are gathered in His name He is among them... to be gathered in Jesus' name does not mean claiming Scripture, it means living Scripture! Though Jesus can make us partakers in His Divinity (He came to grant us eternal life as God's adopted children), we can never make Jesus partaker in our unrighteousness! When we gather in Jesus' we cannot serve the flesh: 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. (1 Corinthians 10:21) Anyone who claims to gather in Jesus' name only to proceed with satisfying the desires of the flesh... he/she is as far from Christ and as misguided as those who publicly wear a cross about their chest, suggesting to the world that they are in alligiance with Christ, only to deny Christ by their wanton rejection of God's Authority! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, sarJ! The following is an on-line dictionary's definition: flint PRONUNCIATION: flnt NOUN: 1. A very hard, fine-grained quartz that sparks when struck with steel. 2a. A piece of flint used to produce a spark. b. A small solid cylinder of a spark-producing alloy, used in lighters to ignite the fuel. 3. A piece of flint used as a tool by prehistoric humans. 4. Something resembling flint in hardness: a jaw of flint. You can access several resources there: www.bartleby.com. Specially in the Psalms we find God being referenced as the Rock/Rock of Salvation, etc. Jesus, in the New Testament, is the Stone (Corner-Stone) which the builders rejected or the Stone which will cause many to stumble... He is also the Rock that gave the living water to the people of Israel in their trek through the desert! God Bless! Angel |

170 | Scripture - more than one meaning? | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 139951
Hi! I too believe that when we read the Holy Scripture there are more values than the text itself... Jesus' prefiguration in Joseph is one such example! * Both were chosen by the Father to lead Israel * Both were hated by their bretheren to the point of desiring their death * Both were sold for mininal amounts * Both were obedient to the Father * Both forgave their bretheren * Both rescued their bretheren from death... There are many mirrors in Scripture that may or may not be made explicitly so through further Scriptural reference... (Abraham's sacrifice; Melchizedek, manna, the rock (Rock) which provided Israel with life-giving water; the Good Shepherd; the bronze serpent; the Passover Lamb; the various resurrections (people brought back to life--including the bones in Ezekiel); the various anointed ones of God (priests, prophets, kings)... Moses spoke to Israel and prophesized that there would come to them a Prophet like himself... so in essence Moses too was a prefigurement of Christ (he had complete authority and dominion over Israel as well as the responsibility of leading them to safety!)... But all of the prefigurement are as perfect as our mirror images (only a shadow of our existence); they could never replace the actual Anointed One that was to come! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, luk154! Is your instructor against having images (there are certain relegious groups that cannot stand images of Jesus) statues, paintings, pictures or is he against worshipping Jesus? (there are congregations that want to be saved but they think that they can manipulate God to save them through their own salvific plans)... Rejecting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior... demoting Him to a demigod, a glorified prophet or an angel is the shortest and surest route to damnation! He is the Alpha and the Omaga, the Beginning and the End, the One that was and Is, the Eternal Father, God the Mighty One, the Resurrection and Life... everything that is, both the visible and invisible was created by Him and for Him! (Revelation 1:7-8; 21:6; 22:13; Isaiah 9:6; John 11:25-26; 3:17-20; Colossians 1:16-20) Idolatry does not depend upon an image or statute or any other relic... normally we keep pictures and other mementos of our loved ones (inclusive of jewelry and ashes)... as long as we do not worship them instead of God there's no problem! But if we start placing them above God... we are committing idol worship! Worshipping Jesus is not idol worship as He is God Eternal! (John 1:1-14; Philippians 2:5-11) May the Holy Spirit enlighten your mind and spirit! God Bless! Angel |

173 | Please explain | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 141511
Hi, Janae! Do you believe that God is Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent? If you believe as I do that God is all of the above... and more!, you would agree with me that it would not have taken Jesus much time to rescue us from sin! Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God (John 1:29) did not hold on to His Divine Power and Existence (Philippians 2:5-11)... and though we are not able to fully comprehend God's Way (Isiah 55:8-11), Jesus did leave us with enough information to understand what we must (John 10:30; Mark 9:23; Mark 10:27; John 14:16-17, 26; 16:7-15)... so it is a matter of Faith that we understand that Jesus is God and that as the Lamb of God He did not come to demonstrate God's full Authority and Power... yet even in this diminished capacity, as the Lamb of God, Jesus has full Authority over Satan and his minions (Matthew 4:10-11; 8:28-29; John 16:33; 14:30)... ...it is also a matter of Faith that we accept Jesus' Word as Truth and that we allow the Truth to reveal itself as God intends to reveal it and not as we would have it be, in a more comprehensible and palatable way... time is irrelevant to God... to Him a day could be as 1000 years and vice versa (2 Peter 3:8)... hence, our Redemption on the Cross did not have to take Jesus more than a billionth of a nanosecond! We find that Redemption took place and that the Father was separated from the Son in that instant in which Redemption took place (Matthew 27:46-53)... and we know that Jesus' Glory would return to Him in a fraction of time because He promised one of the men crucified with Him that that very day he would be with Him in Paradise! (Luke 23:38-43)... Remember, just as man was not made for the Sabbath but the Sabbath for man, our limitations do not apply to God! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, sweetgirl1925! There are two parts to understanding the Word of God: * Humbly asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten us so that we may understand the Holy Scripture, and * Practice, practice, practice! My Mom is 87 years old--I praise God for His generosity towards us!--she is having more and more difficulties with her health, he eye-sight, her ability to retain short-term memory... still she is always praying, always reading the Holy Bible! ...understanding Scripture is not simply dependent on human intellectual prowes (if it were so the world's wealthy people would have a noticeable advantage over the indigent people in the world!)... it is dependent upon our desire to know God and to humbly and obediently worship Him! Have you heard of the poor widow? She mad an offer to God that demonstrated what was in her heart... Jesus exalted her for her humble generosity! (Mark 12:41-44) James tells us that it is very simple: just ask God for Wisdom and He will be happy to oblige! (James 1:5) We need the Holy Spirit to enlighten us and to teach us about the fulness of God... that is His function; Jesus promised that He (the Holy Spirit) would be sent by Him to us to continue our teaching and enlightening us! I will pray for you... that the Holy Spirit build you up in Jesus so that His Word Bless you with God's Wisdom and Understanding! (1 Corinthians 2:12-16) God Bless! Angel |

177 | can you explain what means | Bible general Archive 2 | JCrichton | 145204
Hi, dltlshines! There's an intertwined relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit... this relationship comes to us in various forms... at the end of times (God's speak for completion of Salvific Plan) Jesus, as the Lamb of God, comes to the world (John 1:1-18)... as His function (death and resurrection) comes to a completion He sends the Holy Spirit to lead and guide the Church (John 14:16-26, 15:26; 16:7-15)... The Holy Spirit will reveal all and will remind us aboud Jesus' Words... He will testify to the Church that Jesus is the Lord and that He was sent by the Father (Read John 1:1 - 51 and the book of Acts); Jesus' disciples, then and now will also testify about Him: they testified about what they experienced (including Paul, previously known as Saul) and we testify about what we have come to know about Jesus, through Scripture and personal experience. God Bless! Angel |

Hi, regguh! This forum facilitates Christian interchange on the Holy Scripture... the book of Malachi does not contain predictions... Though prophecy and prediction are congruent, we tend to define prediction as a divination made by man; while a prophecy is define as a revelation made by God to man through the Holy Spirit... I've just read through St. Malachi... there is no mention of x number of Popes... Personally I am not aware of extra-Biblical writings of St. Malachi; if that is your reference point, this site would not discuss dogmatic writings... perhaps you should go to www.ewtn.com; that is a Roman Catholic site and has additional reference sites that deal with Catholic issues... You are welcomed to open discusions on any Biblical subject that relates to the Holy Scripture... and, if you wish to do so, you can contact me directly at jcrichtonfs1@yahoo.com--I would be more than glad to look into your original query!
