161 | Careful who you listen to. | Judg 21:25 | EdB | 243592
Since the Reformation this has been the Modus Operandi of the church. Men have decided what is true and then created a creed/doctrine that attests to it. This creed/doctrine is then repeated over and over until it becomes more than a creed/doctrine of man but becomes truth. For the most part this is good as in the case of the Apostles Creed. However there have been creeds/doctrines that contain falsehoods that make God out to being nothing more than a puppet master. And that is where the problem arises. Any creed, any doctrine that describes God differently than all of scripture describes Him is false. Any creed, any doctrine that suggests salvation is withheld from all men stands in conflict with scripture that says Christ died for the world. 1 Timothy 2:4 - God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. [Note: This is the same "all men" for whom we should pray - v1.] 2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. The problem is not with quoting as such the problem is quoting that which is counter to the truth of scripture. |

162 | Preach the Gospel not an agenda | Matt 10:16 | EdB | 243589
1 Corinthians 1:17 (KJV) 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. Today many us wisdom of words instead of the truth of the Cross in sermons, preaching, teaching, and even in forums. Man is easily impressed but also easily intimidated by people that use wisdom of words. We are warned there are wolves around us that would suck the truth of scripture out of us. Often these wolves are have no intention of being wolves but have been deceived themselves by careful use of the wisdom of words of others. Often people with flowing terms about the greatness of a man, a teaching, of a philosophy but they completely ignore the initial cost of such fame, of the teaching, of the philosophy. That cost is simply dismissed as not their problem. Even though it violated the very things our savior prayed for. Wisdom of words should never be promoted preaching the Gospel the Cross of Jesus is what is important |

163 | Who should teach us? | Matt 11:25 | EdB | 243588
1 Corinthians 1:19 (KJV) 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Lord let me know nothing of man but everything of You. Too often it is the other way around. People respect man’s intellect, man’s logic, man’s reasoning, man’s philosophies but despise the TRUTH of God. As the Psalmist said in Psalms 119 let me know Your ways, Your Laws, Your Statues, Your precepts, Your word, Your counseling, Your works. No Psalmist ever penned the words let me learn the ways of man, teachings of man, the wisdom of man. |

164 | Shocking to some! | 2 Tim 3:16 | EdB | 243587
It is interesting to see people that claim the authority of the scripture but then turn right around and quote man to make their point. They beat their chest and tell you they are Sola Scriptura people but then tell you how to read the Bible or how to understand it correctly. They use quotes of men instead of the teaching of God. If they do quote scripture is narrow selected portions that seem to make their point when taken in a limited context but when viewed with all of scripture is it then revealed that they don’t support that point at all. Only the word of God is living word, that lives forever. |

165 | Defend truth | 2 Tim 2:15 | EdB | 243570
Many claim to defend scripture but in fact what they defend is their reading of scripture. Scripture needs no defense from man, it is well capable of defending itself. What scripture needs is the untainted, clear and concise reading and understanding not in part but in whole. However man has gotten involved and convinced himself that scripture often is not saying what it says, it actually is saying what their man made theology, man made doctrines, man induced prejudices want it to say. They to their benefit dismiss anything that shows their understanding is wrong. Heaven forbid if someone says I have experienced … They immediately retort experience is not scripture and isn’t to be trusted. Yet almost all of scripture is written account of the experiences of men. Why are writers of scripture experiences acceptable when today’s aren’t even though they line up with scripture? Why because they often conflict with the theology, doctrine and prejudices of the person that is rejecting them holds to. 2 Peter 1:20 says scripture is not for private interpretation yet they claim and name their interpretations such as Reformed, Armenian, Anabaptist, Dispensational, Preterist, Ammillennial, Millennial, Historistic and etc. |

166 | Unleashed it Will Defend Itself | Is 2:3 | EdB | 243569
Much is said about unleashing the lion of scripture but is that really what we do? Or do many try to put a leash around the lions neck in an attempt to make it go where they want it to? I believe we must take scripture literal when it is at all possible and only when it becomes clear that this can’t be done, then and only then, should we seek for an alternate way to understand scripture. However I know many that when this is said get a very patronizing smile upon their face and as much as say “you poor silly uneducated being you simply don’t understand.†They then attach their leash to the lion and make him go where they want and say see, that is really what scripture said. The problem today is not scripture but the fact very few read it. I believe few read it because they see within the Christian church each faction saying you don’t understand scripture is really saying thus and such. The world see this and says to itself if the church can’t figure it out how am I suppose to, why bother. Take scripture without theological, denominational, personal prejudice and preach it and the world will change. But while most claim to do this, in fact they don’t they exegesis scripture and preach it as they have been taught by theological, denominational, and personal prejudices. And claim everyone chains the Lion. |

167 | Work of man | Is 55:11 | EdB | 243563
Isaiah 55:11 (KJV) 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. On this forum of late there has been much chest beating over the Westminster confession. However the Westminster confession is a work invented and constructed by man. What most people don’t know is that it has been rewritten and revised many times by different denominations. Most will admit the original contained errors or doctrine and theology that needed to be corrected. It is not the inspired word of God and thus does not carry any of the promises of God. It must be taken at face value a work of man to satisfy the theology of men that would accept it. Nothing more or nothing less. |

168 | True and faithful preaching | 1 Pet 1:25 | EdB | 243562
True preaching is a man under the unction of the Holy Spirit openly doing an exegesis of scripture. Nothing more nothing less. |

169 | Latin Bible preserved scripture | 1 Pet 1:25 | EdB | 243561
Much is said about Bible translations and bringing the Bible into the language of the people. However God had a plan. Translation is as much an art as a skill. Word for word translations coming from Hebrew or even Greek in many cases are simply impossible. Often the Hebrew or Greek word means far more than any single English word can accurately represent. Also at the time many point to a birth of common language translations, many people that spoke only the common language were illiterate and unable to read or write their common language. So having something they could read was nearly useless to them. Many find this hard to believe but stats today say 14 percent of Americans are functionally illiterate and that a full 70 percent of those in prison are unable to read or write anything above the most basic levels. If our stats are so bad imagine the rest of the world, actually the world average reflects our stats but there are countries which have rates a low as only 19 percent. The educated people of say the 1500’s that could read and write were trained in Latin which also happened to be a language which based on Greek was almost a word for word translation. I believe God plan it this way to preserve His Word until the people trained in the science of translation were able to do so. However since Latin is what many call a dead “language†it is no longer taught in schools, which is a shame. I think if it was there would be less misunderstanding (differing interpretations) of what scripture is saying. Incidentally many of the Hebrew words spoken at the time of the Pentateuch have been forever lost. My understanding is when Israel left Egypt they had to reinvent part of the Hebrew dialect. I’m told by experts in most cases they were right on or very close but in other cases no one knows for sure. |

170 | Be lead of God not of men! | 1 Kin 13:18 | EdB | 243560
1 Kings 13:17-18 (KJV) 17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. This is the story of the young prophet and the old prophet. The young prophet was sent by God to Bethel to prophesize to Jeroboam, which he did, 1Kings 13:1-10. An old prophet heard about this and went out to meet him. 1 Kings 13:11- 16. The old prophet wanted the young prophet to come to his house so he lied to him even after the young prophet recited to the Old Prophet what the Lord had told him. The young prophet was deceived and went to the old Prophet’s house where he ate and drank. 1 Kings 13:19- 20. At this point the old Prophet, which had lied stood and prophesized to the young Prophet, saying that since he had disobeyed God his body would not be buried in the grave of his fathers. 1Kings 13:21-22. If we continue to read 1 Kings 13 we will see the young prophet was killed on the road by lions and to prove it was God the Donkey remained untouched as did the body of the prophet. The old Prophet took the body of the young Prophet and buried him in the his families tomb and told his children that when he died we wanted to be buried in the same grave. The end of the story is seen in 2 Kings 23:16-18 where King Josiah was defiling the false altar by burning bones on it spared the tomb of the young prophet which also spared the bones of the old Prophet. What is the point of this story? Two things Allow God to lead you but don’t turn away from what God has told you. Second thing even lying prophets can be and are used of God but they can not supersede what God has already spoken clearly to you. This is how the Holy Spirit works today, He speaks to us and gives us direction. However that direction will never violate a truth already established by God’s Word. |

171 | God's Providence | Ruth 1:11 | EdB | 243557
I believe the Book of Ruth is an excellent example of how God incorporates man’s free will into His perfect overall plan. Each character in the Book of Ruth was free to make their own decisions however a foreknowing God what their decision was and incorporated that decision into what God ultimately desired to happen. God allowed free will or choice but His will was done not because God manipulated people’s will but because He is God and able to make all things work as He planned. |

172 | "Praying to a god who cannot save..." | Is 45:20 | EdB | 243556
Your example of the woman was an attempt made by this woman to convince herself she was not in danger of hell’s fire. Many in Christianity today want to divide God into many pie slices, from which they get to pick the slices they agree with and ignore or throw away any slices the don’t like or requires a change in their life style. They then try to form their slices of God into the full and complete God that does not conflict with their life. This is not a new phenomenon but has gone on since the formation of the church. I believe it worsen during the time of Reformation when many restraints were cast aside in the name of man’s determination of what scripture was saying for himself. That said I do believe a remnant of truth has and will prevail in the church. It is this unblemished virgin bride that Jesus returns to receive one day. |

173 | Prayer for the Student/Studies | Job 36:22 | EdB | 243555
A prayer that each of us today should pray. The minds of our youth are under attack from every corner and hellish idea. The most frightening aspect of this comes in focus when we look at our "Bible Colleges" and Seminaries, which are filled with professors that deny hell and in many cases the deity of Christ. |

In case there is any confusion the ESV English Standard Version and NASB New American Standard Bible are not connected. I believe the reference to ESV was a mistake. I consider the NASB to be superior to the ESV which is has strong Reformed Theological leanings. |

175 | What is the "perfect" | 1 Cor 13:10 | EdB | 243545
What is the meaning of perfect in 1 Corinthians 13:10? Question: "What is the meaning of perfect in 1 Corinthians 13:10?" Answer: First Corinthians 13:10 says, “When that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away†(KJV). The ESV puts it this way: “When the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.†The “in part†or “partial†things are the gifts of prophecy, knowledge, and tongues (verses 8–9). There will be a time when these gifts will cease because something better (“that which is perfectâ€) will replace them. Perfect means “completeâ€â€”the incomplete will be replaced by the complete. There is some debate as to what the coming of the “perfect†thing is. The two most common views are the completion of the Bible and the glorification of believers in heaven. It is our view that the “perfect†thing to come is the glorification of believers in heaven, or, more properly, the eternal state. The completion of the Bible did not put an end to the gift of prophecy (“forth-telling†or preaching) or knowledge (understanding of Scripture). The church is continually being edified today by Spirit-filled preachers and teachers who exercise these gifts. But, for the time being, we are limited in our understanding: “We know in part and we prophesy in part†(1 Corinthians 10:9). When we get to heaven, the “partial†things will give way to the “perfect,†and preaching and teaching will no longer be needed. What about the gift of tongues, which is mentioned alongside prophecy and knowledge in 1 Corinthians 10:8 (but not in verse 9)? The precise wording of verse 8 may hold a clue: the prophecies are said to “ceaseâ€; knowledge is said to “pass awayâ€; and tongues are said to “be stilled†(in contrast to love, which “never failsâ€). Paul uses one Greek verb in reference to the completion of prophecy and knowledge, and a completely different Greek verb in reference to the completion of tongues. The implication is that prophecy and knowledge will be “rendered inoperative or abolished†by an external force, but the gift of tongues will cease on its own. So, when the perfect comes, prophecy and knowledge are actively ended, but tongues will already have ended. First Corinthians 13:11–12 says, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.†When shall we see face to face? When shall we know fully, even as we are fully known? This will occur when we pass from this life and enter God’s glorious presence in heaven (see 1 John 3:2). When we are glorified in heaven, the perfect will have come, and we will truly have put childish ways behind us. http://www.gotquestions.org/perfect-1Corinthians-13-10.html |

177 | Every Word | Deut 8:3 | EdB | 243543
The question has been asked where are we to get errorless scripture! I'm here to say scripture is errorless! The problem occurs when we refuse to admit we read with a bias, we interpret things dependent on preconceived beliefs. The problem is not the scripture the problem is the reader. We look for proof texts instead of the truth. We look for verses that support our position while ignoring the whole of scripture. We mock experience as meaningless even though it witnesses to the truth of scripture. We mock those that disagree as being unlearned or non thinking. We cite the quotes of men that lived sinful lives while ignoring the truth spoken to us by a sinless Jesus. We refuse to accept faithful teaching as not being scripture but will cling to doctrine/creeds devised by man. We must admit we have double standards! Salvation comes one way not through a creed or statement of doctrine it comes only through Jesus Christ just as Romans 5:18 to all men if they believe as in John 3:16 |
