161 | Who'll go through the tribulation? | Matt 24:31 | John Reformed | 67232
Dear Searcher, When anyone mentions the elect, I am drawn like a bee to honey! Election of Grace - The Scripture speaks (1) of the election of individuals to office or to honour and privilege, e.g., Abraham, Jacob, Saul, David, Solomon, were all chosen by God for the positions they held; so also were the apostles. (2) There is also an election of nations to special privileges, e.g., the Hebrews (Deut. 7:6; Rom. 9:4). (3) But in addition there is an election of individuals to eternal life (2 Thess. 2:13; Eph. 1:4; 1 Pet. 1:2; John 13:18). (Easton's Bible Dictionary) I believe the passage is a reference to the gathering together of all the saints (those chosen by God and saved through His gracious gift of faith). John |

Dear Cwade, It has not been given to us to know the specifics of our ressurected bodys, but we have been given a great expectation! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning! John 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. |

163 | Am I understanding you clearly | John 3:16 | John Reformed | 65353
Yes Welldigger. It is on the basis of Jesus' shed blood on my behalf that I rely. Not on my perfect obedience to the Ten Commandments and not on good works, baptism on anything else. Christ alone is my salvation. He is my righteousness. He is my King. He is my God. I place no confidence in the flesh and I hope that is true for you as well. Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. There is nothing wrong with desiring to be perfect and to pray for God's grace to walk in a wat that is pleasing to Him. But remember: It is Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. He is the Potter and we are the clay. It is God who sanctifies us. We cannot sanctify ourselves apart from His power and grace in our lives. John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." God Bless, John |

164 | You probably have read this scripture | John 3:16 | John Reformed | 65272
Dear Welldigger, I will not have to pay for my sins because Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, paid for them in full on the cross. I earned death through sin, but recieved eternal life as a gift. For the wages of sin is death; BUT the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23) John |

166 | Eternal Life: A Free Gift? | John 3:36 | John Reformed | 64920
Dear Robert, It seems obvious to me that the correct way of interpreting John 3:36 is "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey (BY BELIEVING)the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." Proof that we are saved "by grace alone through faith alone" may be found throughout the New Testament. One suporting text is: Romans 3:27-31 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one. 31 Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. Nevertheless unregenarate men, who are determined to have Scripture speak their own thoughts rather than God's, will twist verses to their own destruction. Even regenerate men are loath to cast aside beloved doctrines of men when faced with hard teachings found in the Bible. "First, because boasting is the outward form of the inner condition of pride. And pride has been the root cause of all the evils and miseries of the world, described in Romans 1:18-3:20. Let's go back and see this first-hand for ourselves. In Romans 1:18 Paul says, "The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness." The truth is available to all people in one way or the other, and instead of humbling ourselves under it, we stand over it and push it down. This is pride. It may take hundreds of different forms - from the most petite and delicate to the most powerful and crude - but the reality is the same: we will stand over the truth and accept what we like and suppress what we don't." (John Piper) May God open the eyes of His church, especialy in these dark times. |

God will punish ALL unrepentant sinners in hell for all eternity. It will not matter what their particular sins happento be. The unrepentant homosexual and the Baptist who was a "christian in name only" will share the same fiery pit. Personaly, if I stood before the Judgment seat of God, I would prefer to be in the shoes of the homosexual than those of a Judas (a false christian of the godhatesfags variety). Peace, |

170 | 'Usher in'? | Rev 1:7 | John Reformed | 62355
Dear Eagle 11, As you probably know, the OT high priest was the only person that God permited to enter into the Holy of Holies and the he could do so only once a year. After Christ our Lord accomplished His Fathers will by offering Himself up as a sacrifice for all those the Father had given Him, the veil, which seperated man from God, was torn in two and since that time those who are in Christ are always in the presence of God. Glory be to God for giving us such a wonderful priviledge! We Christians live our lives "coram deo", before the face of God. Makes you want to shout for joy does'nt it? Hbr 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. I hope his addressed your question. If not try to be a bit more specific and ask again. God Bless, John Reformed |

172 | John 1:13 born,not of natural descent, | John 1:13 | John Reformed | 62189
Dear Sweet, There are those who would disagree with my understanding, but no one can only offer you anything but their opinions. We all must rely on the Spirit through the Word alone to apply the truth to our hearts. That being said, this is what I believe. 1. "who were born, not of blood". Not as a result of parentage or tribe or nation. "for it is by grace you have been saved..." (Eph 2:8) 2. "nor of the will of the flesh". Not as a result of a carnal desire". "for it is by grace you have been saved..." (Eph 2:8) 3. "nor of the will of man,". Not by the will of man". Some say that means because your natural father wills it, but I don't see any reason for that interpretation. It seems forced to me. I believe it means: it does not depend on the will of man which is exactly what the Bible says. "for it is by grace you have been saved..." (Eph 2:8) 4. "but of God". Not by the will of man but by the will of God! "for it is by grace you have been saved..." (Eph 2:8) Praise the Lord! For He SHALL save HIS people from their sins! John Reformed |

173 | God is in control of every single atom? | Bible general Archive 1 | John Reformed | 61767
Part One- -I hope this will help. 1. Inability does not rule out responsibility The Scripture asserts unmistakably man's total inability to transform his character by his own unassisted wit and energy, so making himself Christlike. This is beyond his capacity. "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil" (Jeremiah 13:23). "No man can come unto me except the Father who sent me draw him," says the Lord Christ (John 6:44). The act of true and simple faith in the Lord is impossible apart from the drawing and gracious gift of the Father. Jesus again tells us that except a man be born again he cannot see or enter into the kingdom of God (John 3:3,5). Yet, there are commands with which God confronts every single person. For example, "You must be born again" (John 3:7); "God commands all people everywhere to repent" (Acts 17:30); and "Love the Lord your God with all your heart." Are they sincere commands? Absolutely. All creatures are responsible to their Creator. Do not such commands presuppose a modicum of ability? No. Not since the fall of our father Adam. God deals with people according to the standards of responsibility and obligation, not according to the measure of ability. John Murray says, "If obligation presupposes ability then we shall have to go the whole way and predicate the total ability of man." Why are the commands given? They are a revelation of the will of almighty God, and they also make men realize their helplessness. One result of the inability of man being preached is that people are forced to stop trusting in themselves. This shuts them up to rely upon God's grace. It is not the conviction of helplessness that keeps men away from Christ; it is the opposite: "I cannot come to him, but I must come to him. What fearful inability! What high responsibility! Who shall deliver me from this dilemma? I thank God for Jesus Christ the enabling Saviour." 2. Certainty does not rule out necessity All that God has determined to do will most certainly be achieved: "I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please" (Isaiah 46:10). The plan of God is unchangeable, because God is faithful and true (Job 23:13-14). It is unconditional, that is, its execution does not depend on any action of man but even renders such action certain (Acts 2:23; Ephesians 2:8). Moreover, it is all-inclusive, embracing the good and the wicked actions of men (Ephesians 2:10; Acts 2:23), contingent events (Genesis 50:20), the duration of a man's life (Job 14:5) and the place where a man will live (Acts 17:26). It ensures the certain salvation of a vast number of favoured sinners. Yet the certainty of God's secret will being accomplished does not rule out the necessity of men doing all that God has commanded in the Bible. When Paul was told that the Lord had many people in Corinth he did not sit on a chair on his veranda waiting for Corinthians to drop decision cards in his lap. For eighteen months he taught the Word of God to all in Corinth who would hear him (Acts 18:11). He did it beseeching them to believe, stretching forth his hands to them, entreating them to repent. He wept for them. He prayed for them all, and he asked others to pray. He visited them privately, debated with his opponents publicly, and apologized if he offended them by harsh words. He sought to live a Christlike life before them so that in nothing would his message be maligned through sin. He knew God's chosen people in Corinth would most certainly confess Christ, but that knowledge in no way ruled out the necessity of his living a God-fearing and fervently evangelistic life. |

174 | The Author... | 1 John 1:1 | John Reformed | 61466
Dear GJH, My advice is to stop trying to generate spiritual emotions within yourself. Each one of us is unique as is God's plan for each. Just because you don't feel saved is no indication that you are not saved! Here is a step out of the swamp: Matt 7:8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. I would like you to open up to Johns Gospel and read Chapter 6. Then tell me if you can find another step (or steps) in it. Remember to pray for enlightenment before you read. From what I know from reading your words I am encouraged on your behalf. A verse that continues to help me is Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding God said it I believe it. I'm glad that you have decided to read Pilgrims Progress. But the Bible is essential reading. If you have any questions about either just ask me and I will do my best to help. John |

175 | Who is God talking to? | Acts 2:17 | John Reformed | 61027
Dear Charis, I agree with Searcher. It is absolutely necessary to identify who is being addressed. The subject may be "universal" and apply to all readers, but it may also be "specific" and apply to the immediate audience only. You stated that "Honestly, who cares who Peter was talking to? Regarding the Bible, who is God talking to? I am of the opinion that the Lord is addressing me (and YOU!), and all that call upon His name!" Is it not of paramount impotance to identify to whom Jesus is speaking in John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father." A less obvious example is Luke 13:34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! Those to whom Jesus is speaking to is often misinterpeted as being the jews in general. But if carefull attention is paid to the context, we will find that Jesus is actually addressing the religious leaders. It was the leaders who were attempting to prevent the children from hearing the teachings of Christ. Eventually, in order to silence Him they resorted to murder. So, knowing the audience can radically affect our interpretation of Scripture. John |

176 | Saving graces? | 1 Cor 2:14 | John Reformed | 61017
Dear Mommapbs, Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God Acts 11:18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." Faith may be referred to as a "saving grace" when it is directly related to salvaton as in in eph 2:8. It is also a gift , therefore it may be referred to as a "grace". The same is true for repentance because it is granted unto men according to God's good pleasure. Your Disorganized Brother, John |

178 | Is there a verse about smoking. | 1 Cor 6:19 | John Reformed | 60547
Dear Russ, Our righteouness is imputed to us through the substitutionery death of Christ. In other words, even though we still sin God sees us as if we were perfect. This position of righteousness is by faith alone and not by works. It is a judicial righteousness whereby we are "reckoned" or "considered" guiltless. It is not an inherent or inward righteousness. Even the apostle Paul found it impossible to live a sinless life (Romans 7) but rejoiced in his Lord and Saviour. There are those who claim that smoking is sinful and those who say it is not. But if you have been a daily smoker for an extended period of time you are probably addicted. I know because I am and have been for 40 years. I also know that I have been a christian for over 20 years. It is very difficult to be beset with such a visible sign of our sin nature. I have prayed earnestly for deliverance and continue to do so. Nevertheless, it has pleased God to allow me to suffer this humiliation up until this very day. I do not allow myself to consider my smoking to be anything but sin and I try not to rationalize otherwise. But I continue to pray for grace to quit and thank him for his mercy. I detest the mindset that says we may sin all we want because we have grace. Be careful not to allow satan to place condemnation upon your head, so keep your helmet of salvation firmly in place along with the rest of the armour of God. Do not look to yourself (that will bring nothing but despair) but look to Jesus the author and finisher of your faith. I do not believe that 1 Cor 6:19 and 20 apply to anything but sexual impurity. Paul is explicit in saying that we should not join in sexual intercourse with a prostitute and that this is because the one who does becomes one flesh with her. He also said "Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body." That is, thru sexual sin. (We are all guilty occasionally of forcing a meaning on a verse, for we are all sinners.) I wonder if those who use this verse to chastise smokers also use it to chastise overeaters. I have heard many a fat preacher use this verse to heap guilt on "puffin' prophets" and "sippin' saints" but never mention the one sin that IS named in scripture, which is gluttony. Prov 23:20 "Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; Keep praying and keep looking forward to His return. At that time we will not only be reckoned perfect but will also be perfect. God Bless Russ, John |

Hi Tim, Dubious: doubtful or not settled. My reference is to eschatology in general and pre-millenialisn in particular. But it is not the eschatological view in itself that disturbs me. It is simply the hype and hoopla that that surrounds the marketing of christianity in America, as if it were a commodity. T-shirts, belt buckles, bumper stickers, sensational books and movies etc. A multi billion dollar business..Ain't it wonderful. Oh me oh my. John John |

180 | Does this mean that it is wrong to ask? | Rev 17:16 | John Reformed | 59860
Pastor Glenn, You asked: " Who really was it that held the Christian Missionaries hostage in Afganistan last year? And who really destroyed the twin towers in New York? Or did these things really happen? I will answer your last question first. Yes it really did happen. The christian missionaries were held by the ruling goverment of afghanistan, the Talaban. And, the Twin Towers were destroyed by Al-qaeda. Like all unregenerate people, they do the bidding of their father, the devil. It is only the grace of God that prevented you or I or any other son of Adam from being party to the hi-jacking. These are the human agents responsible for this evil act. Now, I think you will agree that the worst atrocity ever commited by the hand of man was The Crucifixtion of The Lord of Glory. It was perpertrated by Romans, Jews and other Gentiles. But the Bible says it happened because it was God's eternal plan for the salvation of His people. Acts 4:27-28 "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur." God pre-destined the calamity in New York. Not for the evil motive the terrorists had but for His own good purpose. Amos 3:6-7 "If a trumpet is blown in a city will not the people tremble? If a calamity occurs in a city has not the LORD done it? Surely the Lord GOD does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets." Pastor Glenn, you used several scriptures (1 John 4:3, 2 John 1:7 and 1 Cor 13:12). These passages tell us the identity of the spirit of anti-christ. What do we need in addition to them? Nothing except the enlightment of the Holy Spirit. Is 45:7 "The One forming light and creating darkness, Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these." I now ask: Of what importance is vain speculation? If God wants me or you to know the identity of anti-christ or the ten kings or any thing else, He will make it quite clear. We will find the answer in His Word and not in the newspapers. John |
