142 | Consequences leading by pride. | Bible general Archive 1 | inmyheart | 75973
There are three ways to destroy Pride, and they must all be taken together: 1) Be grateful to anyone and everyone. Treat even the things people are expected to do as great gifts. Be grateful for your food, your change at Burger King, rain, life itself. Thank everyone. 2) Beg forgiveness of God for the sin of Pride. Go before Him in prayer every day or every few hours and implore His mercy. The more this offends you, the more Pride you have. 3) Ask God for a spirit of Humility and Gratitude. Read Philippians 2:3-11 and imitate it. Understand that without God's Grace, we will never cast away our illusions. Ask God to break your pride and vanity using whatever it takes: illness, loss of friends, loss of family, public humiliation. This is unbelievably difficult to request, and every fiber of our being fights it. We protest it is not fair, or "God doesn't work that way." My friend, what good is health, friends, family, a good reputation, if you have no real love for God, but only a hollow illusion? In the end, all but true love for God is lost, so count all else but God as loss now. For continued reading, the following are a few good books: "Mere Christianity," by C.S. Lewis "New Seeds of Contemplation," by Thomas Merton "The Cost of Discipleship," by Dietrich Bonhoeffer God bless |

144 | Why pride is the number one sin? | Bible general Archive 1 | inmyheart | 75703
popo, Here is a long answer to your short question. It was pride that reached out the hand in the Garden to take of the forbidden fruit. It was pride which formed the foundation of the infamous Tower, and pride that laid its every stone, one upon the other. It was pride that moved David to number his troops and to trust in the sword and the chariot rather than in his God. Pride kept the Israelites in the wilderness for forty years. Pride drove Nebuchadnezzar from his throne and deprived him of his sanity. Pride brought the Apostle Peter low. Pride ate the heart of Pilate with worms. Pride crucified the Lord of Glory and brought destruction upon Jerusalem. Rightly does the Scripture declare, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18). Beware of this consuming cancer; check its spread before it overruns your whole person. Never entertain the thought that perchance you are immune from such a dread disease. Pride is at first a shadow that seeks to elude our notice; it feeds upon ignorance and draws strength from blindness. "[You] do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17), was the chastisement of Christ against the prideful Laodiceans. Yet, once discovered, pride becomes a roaring beast that will fight its eradication with tooth and claw. Fervent prayer and sweat and tears will prove this adversary not unconquerable. However, neither begin to speculate that, once discovered and strived against, that it has gone into remission and cannot assault you afresh. "...[B]eware of the leaven of the Pharisees...." (Matthew 16:11) "Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith" (2 Corinthians 13:5). Further, examine the standard by which you examine yourself. Is it by the infallible Word of God, or is it by your own sentiments and your own self-love that you judge yourself.? Do not even stop there; examine also your interpretation of the standard of the Word. Is it according to truth, or is it according to your own depravity? Always remain suspicious of yourself, of your own righteous deeds and of your knowledge, yea, of your own humility- too easily you may begin to find your righteousness and knowledge grounds for praise, and your humility itself a source of pride. Maintain a constant mistrust regarding yourself, and never rest upon anything but the mercy of the Father and the Blood of His Son for your justification. Therein lies your only source of hope and assurance. Heed also the words of Jesus Christ: "... [W]hy do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:3-5). The intent of our Lord in this passage was not to distinguish between sins or to class them by degrees or magnitude, this one a plank, and that one but a speck. Rather, His exhortation was to make us mindful first of the sin that dwells nearest unto us before we notice that which is afar. What business have you in rebuking your brother and making known his shortcomings, when so great and numerous are your own? The sin that putrefies our own home is to seem to us of more import and ever more odious than that which putrefies our neighbor's home. Though our nostrils, having grown accustomed to the stench in which we ourselves dwell, may often be more sensitive to that to which we are temporarily exposed, we are instructed by Christ to search diligently to find the sin within ourselves before that which is in others. And when we have so discovered one sin, there is yet another that eludes our gaze and must be rooted out. So endless is this task and so consuming this duty, that scarcely have we time to assist our brother in his own search. Pride is quick to see the faults of others but slow to focus upon the faults of the very heart in which it has taken residence. In reading this article, notice how quickly your mind has envisioned someone other than yourself to which these descriptions apply. Notice the exultation that you have begun to feel rise up within your heart in knowing that the prideful man has at last been discovered and exposed publicly. Indeed he has been; he is you: "... [A]ll of you be submissive to one another., and be clothed with humility, for 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time...." (1 Peter 5:5-6) God bless |

146 | Why does Psalm 82:6 say we are gods? | John 10:34 | inmyheart | 75353
Songbirdca, [John 10:24-37] If you read this story without knowing what the rest of the Bible says, you might think that Jesus was saying that everyone is actually God or at least equal to God. But if you look up the passage that Jesus was quoting (Psalms 82:6), it is evident that this is not what he meant. Psalms 82 makes it clear that, while everyone is divine in the sense that we were all created by God and that we are all children of God, we are nothing in comparison to Him. Psalms 82:6-8 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations. The Hebrew word used here for "gods" can mean "rulers, judges, divine ones, angels, or gods." It is a form of the same word used to refer to the one God. Since the Psalms were written as songs or poetry, the writer probably specifically chose this word to represent the contrast between the creation and the creator. He was addressing the leaders of mankind. Even though they were great lords among men and even though God himself gave them their power, they are still accountable to Him for their treatment of the poor and needy. It is a warning against undue pride and an admonition to humble, godly rule. Don't set yourself to be like God because He can take you down as easily as He put you up. The desire to become like God is one of the gravest sins the Bible describes. This was the sin which tempted Eve and caused the fall of mankind. This is also the sin which brought about the fall of the civilization of Babel and the division of all mankind. It is also the sin which caused God to exile Satan and his angels from Heaven. With obvious sarcasm, God said to Job, "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?...Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low, look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you." But we know from Psalm 82 that Job could not do these things. It is God who grants and who rescinds power, not man. Job repented of his presumption. He said, "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. [You asked,] 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. [You said,] 'Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.' My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes." God rewarded Job for his repentance. When Jesus quoted Psalm 82:6, he was making fools of his questioners. The Psalter called all leaders of men representatives of god. Jesus said that if he lived up to the standards he set by calling himself "the Son of God", who were they to dispute it? If they objected to him referring so to himself, they had not been paying attention. By referring to Psalm 82, he justified his own claim and challenged them to live up to God's standards. In effect he was saying, "You claim to be leaders chosen by God, yet you don't do the minimum that God says his leaders must. I claim to be the Son of God, and I can back up my claim with my actions." He did not say that everyone was God or could even become like God. Far too many false doctrines come about by reading our own desires into the Scriptures rather than letting them say what God intends. God bless |

147 | subbmition | Ephesians | inmyheart | 75158
Stacey, Here is a little information from a commentary: Eph.22-24, How wives walk in the light: submitting to their husbands a. The command to submit to your own husbands is as clear as it is difficult; true submission is not only shown in our actions, but in our hearts - God wants us to be able to joyfully embrace submission. i. God commands of every believer submission to some level of authority or another; and as with all submission, wives find it easy to submit to their husbands when they agree, but difficult when they do not agree - but that is where our submission is tested. ii. Essential to the idea of submission is trust - trust in God (because submission to proper authority is always submission to God), more than a trust in the authority (whom God has the ability to by guide). iii. We think we display a lack of trust in the authority by our unsubmissiveness; what we really display is a lack of trust in God, who has commanded our submission. First, I rejoice with you for your deliverance from (his) addiction. I would recommend that you and your husband get counseling or join a recovery program, there are many great Christian groups, because there are many issues that you both still must work through. Paul writes about this in Romans 7:15-20. The process that you are going through is a natural one, but as I have mentioned, as you work and grow with others who have walked in the same path as you both have, and you'll gain the understanding that you seek. God will continue to strengthen both of you. This is my recommended reading to you: Romans 12:1-2 and Philippians 4:8 You have made the best decision that you'll ever make in all of you're life! God bless |

Damascus, here are but a few; Luke 2:40 And the little child [Jesus] grew and became strong, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him. Col. 2:3 In whom [Christ] all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. Psalms 1:1-2 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalms 119:32 I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free. Psalms 119:9-11 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. The Bible is all this and more. This is why the wise person sets himself to knowing and obeying God's word. Jesus said: If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15 God bless |

151 | Difference between sin and sins? | Rom 5:12 | inmyheart | 74734
Hank-- Sin, is a disease of the soul. Like leprosy or cancer SIN slowly eats away until it kills. Like these diseases, some people succumb in a few short years. Others individuals it takes decades. Sin even after a lifetime may not be "That Bad' or "Criminal" but all have come short of the Glory of God. Again, like Cancer, It cares not how good you've been, what you've done or who you are or even how religious you've been. Sin without a cure will destroy your soul. Yes, there is great hope as indicated in Rom. 6:23- "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord". God has the cure for disease. He sent his son Jesus Christ. Through trusting in the word of God and having faith that Jesus is Son of God, we begin to repair the Damage sin has done to our lives. Rom 5:17-19 (KJV) 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. YES, there is a cure for the disease! God did provide the medicine. God bless |

153 | Difference between sin and sins? | Rom 5:12 | inmyheart | 74670
Sin is a disease The first man, Adam, acquired the disease It was acquired by Adam through the forbidden fruit The fruit presumably contained some infective agent This agent has two effects: (1) It initiated a process of decay which introduced physical death into human experience. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin...and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Rom. 5:12). (2) Sin causes physical death. Until Adam ate the forbidden fruit and introdcued this poison into his body, he was not subject to physical death. The day he ate it he became a dying creature, though the process took almost a thousand years to complete. The life span of his descendants was steadily reduced as the effects of the poison became cumulative. Sins are Symptoms of the disease All men now inherit this disease. It is inherited by Adam's descendants through natural generation. The infective agent appears to be passed on through the male seed. Man is inevitably a sinner because he is constitutionally diseased. (2) It effectually marred human behavior, making all men sinful by nature and Spiritually dead. For by one man's disobedience many were made sinners...(Rom. 5:19). Sins cause spiritual death. Although every man begins life as a mortal creature, spiritual death occurs only when one becomes accountable for his behavior. It is not sin, but sins, which break our communion with God. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2) I end this post with "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, look, the Lamb of God, who takes the "sin" of the world." John 1:29 (NIV). God bless |

EdB, No matter how lighter your bible may be getting, I'm not saying what you are stating in your post. Debate all you want, but those who want tattoos are gonna get them no matter what. And those who don't want them will most likely always think the idea is too extreme. But, if we’re gonna concern ourselves this much with a topic and exert so much energy let's be most concerned with the Word of God being tattooed on their heart and whether or not their names are tattooed in the Lamb's Book of Life. Anything beyond that just isn’t worth arguing over. And Thank you for your prayer. About three hours on the streets, one young man recieved Jesus into his heart, Rom. 10:9-10. Praise God. God bless |

See you soon. Grace and Love God bless |
