141 | Divine Healing? | Matthew | inmyheart | 72392
Those who are opposed to present-day Christians performing miracles in the name of Jesus often cite Matthew 7:21-23: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" Jesus himself said the words in this passage, so we must accept them; however, we must understand what he truly means. Some take this passage to be a reference to New Age practitioners who frequently invoke the name of Christ; yet, their beliefs are mostly hostile to Christianity. In any case, Jesus is referring here to some kind of false prophets, and not Christians at all. This is determined by the context of this passage. The verses previous to Matthew 7:21-23 say, "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them" (Matthew 7:15-20). In addition, note that Jesus says to those who come to him, "I never knew you," meaning that they were never Christians in the first place. Jesus does not say that he will disown those in question because they worked miracles in his name, but that simply by working miracles in his name does not constitute a proof of a relationship with him. It is possible for one who is influenced by Satan to appear as one who is on the side of Christ: "Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved'" (Acts 16:16-17). The Bible warns of false apostles, false prophets, and false miracles: "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve" (2 Corinthians 11:13-15); "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders" (2 Thessalonians 2:9); and "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). However, those who use this passage (Matthew 7:21-23) against the Christians who heal the sick and cast out demons in the name of Jesus creates a subtle deception by doing so, since Jesus does not condemn the act of doing good in his name, but that doing good in his name may not be sufficient proof of relationship. In fact, he says in Mark 9:39 that, "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me," which is an implicit approval of one who legitimately performs miracles in his name. Also, if Jesus is condemning those who work miracles in his name, then he would be speaking against the actions of the apostles, as well as contradicting his own commission to all the believers. Therefore, this passage cannot be used to challenge Christians who, in obedience to Christ’s commands, heal the sick in the name of Jesus. Rather, those who refuse to carry out these basic elements of the Christian mandate should be ashamed of their negligence. Once we have an understanding of our authority in Christ and faith in his name, we may confront sicknesses that attempt to attack our own bodies, and that of other people. We may follow the biblical examples in commanding the bodies of the sick to be healed, and the demons that are oppressing people to leave. We may also claim supernatural protection in the name of Jesus: "In my name they will… pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all" (Mark 16:17-18). All this power belongs to us through Jesus Christ. God bless (Speaking the Truth In Love) awesome sign off! |

142 | Explain eye for eye/turn cheek? | Matt 5:1 | inmyheart | 60624
One thought on turning the other cheek was to show the other person that you were equal to him. They would slap on the right side of your cheek with the back of their right hand, showing they were superior to the one being hit, but when the victim turned his cheek, left cheek, this would not have the same effect, because it demostrated he was equal to the one hitting him. (38-42) Jesus interprets the law of retribution a. The Mosaic law did teach an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth (Exodus 21:24); but the religious teachers had moved it out of its proper sphere (a principle limiting retribution for the civil government) and put it in the wrong sphere (as an obligation in personal relationships) b. Jesus presents the fullness of this law: "the non-resistance of evil." i. This is a radical command, but not an absolute one: Jesus Himself resisted evil when He turned tables in the temple ii. This principle is also relevant to personal relationships, and not to the proper functions of government in restraining evil (Romans 13:1-4); I must turn my cheek when I am personally insulted (the cultural meaning of a slap on the cheek), but the government has a responsibility to restrain the evil man from physical assault iii. Jesus also displayed the principle behind the law in His trials before the Sanhedrin and Pilate: we are to let God defend our case, not ourselves c. Positively, we are told to take command of evil impositions by making a deliberate choice to give more than we are required i. Roman law commanded Jews (in their Judean occupation) to carry the pack of any Roman soldier, but only for one mile; Jesus is saying "go beyond the one mile required by law and give another mile out of a free choice of love" ii. This is how we change someone's attempt to manipulate us into our free act of love d. The only limit to this kind of sacrifice is the limit that love itself will impose; it isn't love to give into someone's manipulation without our transforming it into a free act of love; it isn't always love to give or to not resist e. Jesus clearly says that we are not to resist the evil person; "we are to resist evil itself at every opportunity." It has been said that Martin Luther King Jr. used this non-violent approach in his equal rights marches. Also, the thought of giving your cloak also when they ask for your coat, was to bring shame to those who ask, because under your cloak was your nakeness. God bless |

145 | What does this verse mean? | Matt 6:7 | inmyheart | 60478
Greetings, "During chapel everyone began to pray in tongues", did that include yourself? Why didn't the Spirit gently tell anyone else? It's not that I doubt you, just curious! Thank you in advance for your reply. God Bless |

146 | What does this verse mean? | Matt 6:7 | inmyheart | 60531
The right way to pray a. The right kind of prayer does not use vain repetition, which is any and every praying which is all words and no meaning, all lips and no mind or heart. i. The Rabbis had sayings like: "Whoever is long in prayer is heard" and "Whenever the righteous make their prayer long, their prayer is heard." ii. One famous Jewish prayer began: "Blessed, praised, and glorified, exalted, and honored, magnified and lauded be the name of the Holy One" iii. When we try to impress God with our many words, we deny who God is: a loving, yet holy Father; instead, we should follow the counsel of Ecclesiastes 5:2: God is in heaven, and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few. This is a commentary from my file, with some thought on Matthew 6:7. You are speaking of a different topic, speaking in tongues. Don't confuse speaking in tongues with hindu chanting. "Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." 1Corinthians 14:39-40 (NIV). God bless |

148 | Saved but not living for God? | Matt 6:33 | inmyheart | 163349
If you have been saved, why would a person go live in the world, but the word says; Mat 18:12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? Mat 18:13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that [sheep], than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. My friend, whoever you are speaking of, God has given us promises that He will not leave us nor foresake us. As you know the things in the world are not everlasting, the backslider is missing the peace of mind, entering the rest of God, the provisions of life, and not to mention the testimony that of a persons life, reflecting the image of God, that the world is hungry for. God bless you and thank you for the question. inmyheart |

150 | RAVENING WOLVES OF DECEPTION | Matt 7:15 | inmyheart | 62587
It is the same message Paul preached, saying that as believers we are to put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and that we are to put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22, 24) God bless |

152 | Is "slain in the Spirit" biblical? | Matt 16:6 | inmyheart | 90680
HEALING IN THE ATONEMENT Even in our world of advanced medical technologies, there are many diseased individuals living all around us. Many of them suffer constant pain, and some of them do not have the ability to even perform the most ordinary tasks. There are others who endure lesser sicknesses, but the pain and inconvenience are just as real. It is natural for the Christian to ask whether God has provided any relief for such individuals. Some say that God decides whom he may heal on a case-by-case basis, that he may heal some but not others, and that he has good reasons for doing so in each instance. I will argue that according to the Scriptures, it is God’s desire for every Christian to be healthy. I base this assertion on what the Bible reveals to us concerning the nature of God and the atoning work of Christ. I will show that these two elements are the basis for faith in receiving healing. The Source and Origin of Sickness. In a very real sense, all sickness began because of sin. Physical death itself had started because of the sin of Adam: "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Many individual instances of sickness had occurred since then as a direct result of specific sins. For example, after having healed a man who "had been an invalid for thirty-eight years" (John 5:5), Jesus said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you" (John 5:14). Although sickness itself had started due to Adam’s transgression, this is not to say that every instance of sickness is due to a specific sin that the individual has committed. In John 9, when Jesus and his disciples came across a man blind from birth, the disciples asked, "Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" (v. 2). Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned" (v. 3). In other words, not every instance of sickness can be traced back to a particular sin. However, even if a particular instance of sickness is the direct result of a sin that one has committed, the word of God says that there is forgiveness for such a one. James 5:15 says, "The prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven." We should be careful before determining the spiritual reasons for someone’s sickness. There are a number of reasons and it may not be a sin, so do not judge a person base on limited and inaccurate information. The person may not have sinned. He may have contracted the sickness and allow it to remain due to lack of wisdom or ignorance of the Scriptures, or some other reasons. God bless |

In 1988, an ORU student named D.R. McConnell published a thesis on the Word of Faith movement that would shock the Christian world (or at least the Christians in America). The title of this book was A Different Gospel. Supposedly, this book revealed the shocking "truth" concerning the origin of the teachings of Essek William Kenyon. This book supposedly revealed that Kenyon's teachings were not influenced by divine revelation or Evangelical Christianity, but by Christian Science and other Metaphysical influences. The premise of the book was this: First prove that E.W. Kenyon had metaphysical and cultic influences in his writings and teachings. Then show that well known Faith teacher, Kenneth Hagin Sr., whom so many believed was the father of the modern day faith movement, to have plagiarized Kenyon's writings. If you can do that then you have made Kenyon the true father of the modern day faith movement. By making Kenyon the true father of the modern day faith movement, you can then prove that the whole movement is cultic and heretical. This book was a great weapon in the hands of those who already had a bone to pick with the modern day faith teachers. Now they had research and scholarship on their side. This book was considered to be THE book to reference if one desired to receive accurate information on this movement. That is, until Hendrik Hanegraaf came out with his landmark book, Christianity In Crisis. Now those who opposed this movement had two weapons in their hands to confront those smart aleck, cocky Word of Faith people. I will only quote from one more source. Dr. Frederick K.C. Price, the pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center in California has also suffered false accusations and misunderstandings from the critics of the faith movement. However, in his book, How Faith Works, Dr. Price took the time to explain the differences between Bible faith and the teaching of cults such as Christian Science. Dr. Price relates in his book about a battle he had with a tumor on his chest. He went though surgery to have it removed but some of it had already spread and started growing back. He decided this time to stand on the Bible and trust God for his healing. Dr. Price began quoting Matthew 8:17 and 1 Peter 2:24 to himself.. He went through some trials as the tumor seemingly got worse. Nevertheless, Dr. Price continued declaring God's Word. Eventually his faith was rewarded (Heb. 11:6). During the testimony, which is in much more detail in his book than what I have related, Dr. Price said this: I never went around saying I didn't hurt when in fact I did hurt. If you do that you're getting over into the realm of Christian Science and the mind science religions. You're saying the thing doesn't exist. I've never said it wasn't there. I never said the thing wasn't hurting. I didn't say anything about it at all. I ignored it. I only talked about what I believed. And I said, "I believe that I am well. I believe that I am healed." I did believe because the Word of the Lord said to believe that I receive and I'd have it. This book was first written in 1976, long before the accusations that have been leveled against the faith teachers. I personally believe that the critics of faith teaching were on an agenda, one which was not from God. God bless |

158 | Divorce and Remarriage is NOT Adultery | Matt 19:9 | inmyheart | 63186
Marriage consists of the union of a man and a woman, whose covenant relationship is witnessed and officiated by God himself. The Christian is only permitted to marry another Christian. If one is converted after marriage, one is not to divorce the spouse. But if the non-Christian spouse desires to sever the relationship, the Christian cannot force him or her to remain. Once within a marriage relationship, one must remain faithful, and not to divorce another, except when the other is found to be unfaithful. Even then, divorce is not necessary, but only permitted. One who divorces the spouse illegitimately is a covenant-breaker, and incurs God's judgment. Remarriage is generally allowed, and is encouraged or discouraged under different conditions. But again, it must only occur between two Christians. God bless |

First of all I never gave you a challenge. I asked you a question. If you are mind set on not giving the tithe, so be it. I believe in tithing, I believe it was ordained by God, but for us to build a thread here on who is right, well, in not right. My statement is, tithe was before the law, period. We serve a God that does not change, and although we do not live under the law, the law is still in effect today. Thank God, you, don't have to kill anyone to give to God. God bless |
