1264 | Why Saul to Paul? | Acts 13:9 | prayon | 4763
Hank, In bible times much emphasis was placed on the meaning of names, such as Abram to Abraham in Gen17:5. The name Saul means destroyer. Paul, however, means worker. Paul did go from being a destroyer to being a worker. prayon
1265 | Are there saints that willl come through | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 4759
I believe that some will make it through the tribulation because God is merciful and His grace abounds. Throughout the bible God has given people every last chance to be saved because of His great love for us. I can not believe that it will be any different in the tribulation times. I don't see Him deserting anyone and leaving them without someone to provide guidance to Him. Some saints will have to remain on earth to do His work. As for starving from the inability to buy food, I remind you of 1Kings 17:6 where God ordered the ravens to suply Elijah with food. Mark or not, God can provide for all our needs. I admit this could be an assumption on my part.
1266 | Synagogue and church analogous? | Matt 23:1 | prayon | 4756
Hank, I am going to take a stab at this since no one else has. I am going to say that no they were not the same. In the gospels numerous times Jesus put the synagogs down because the leaders were more interested in pomp and circumstance and rituals than in teaching the word of God. The rabbi's and priests looked righteous and religious on the outside but were greedy, full of filth and self indulgent on the inside. They did not care about people's souls,(see the woes in Matthew chapter 23). I believe that Jesus would not want His NT church to be simialr to this at all.
1267 | Do you mean some people will live twice? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 4752
I must of sounded very confusing. I did not mean to imply that anyone was going to live twice - as you stated there is no such thing as reincarnation. The ones who will live on earth are the tribulation saints that did not die, and I doubt that there will be many. Those martyred will come back to earth with Jesus to reign the 1000 years. Does this make any more sense? |

1269 | New Age Movement new? | Gen 3:5 | prayon | 4718
The New Age Movement is a movement of people based on a complex system of beliefs which supposedly will: Save the planet Change the world into a perfect utopian society Usher in the Age of Aquarius and the Christ The main concept is self worship, that man is the center of all things. It believes in the furtherance of humanity based on what man can do for himself. It teaches you to look INSIDE yourself for enlightenment, wisdom, and power. Man think's he's his own god and that God is whatever you make him to be. Unfortunetly the New Age Movement is the most powerful social force in the country today. The New Age Movement changes or ignores historical facts or data that can or will interfere with the achievement of a goal. They believe that the end justifies the means. "If I am a god how can I be wrong". They believe in having "spiritual experiences" without the cost of repentence of that sin. It is a anti-Christ system based on contact from the spirit worker. Humanism plus spiritualism equals New Age. They do not believe that there is a need to be reconciled with God. They believe that you are not born a sinner and that we are one with God, we are a expression of the God spirit. They believe that you can make the bible say anything you want it to say and the accurate guideline is to ask yourself. There are many different holy books that I will not name but each one is considered a different spiritual path. The 5 major New Age Doctriunes are from Gen 3:1-5: 1) The first seonce, or speaking through another, in history. Satan spoke through the snake in the garden. This was also the birthplace of the occult and the first contact with the spirit realm or transmeditation. 2) Verse 4 also talks about reincarnation, "surely not die". 3) "eyes will be opened"; works equals salvation and God's love. If you can do this your eyes will be opened. 4) Oaths, secret rituals, and societies are to be used. God kept the knowledge of good and evil from us so some things need to be secret. 5) "be like God" - tells us that we can be like God. In bible prophecy they believe in a one world religion, the New World Order and in no national barriers. They believe the real new age is the millenial reign with Jesus. On life they believe we are here to serve and worship Mother Earth - which I understand is one of Al Gore's teachings. They believe that we will come back again and again and again until we get it right. PLEASE NOTE: This information came from a workshop I attended given by Eric Barger of Take A Stand Ministries. It does not focus on any one particular "denomination" but on all in general. |

1270 | Brotherly love, primary? | John 13:35 | prayon | 4714
Wow - talk about "hitting the nail on the head!" I think that everyone should read your answer. I also believe that a list of guidelines or intentions should be read as part of the sign-up process. It is so true that people have been nit-picking over trivial issues and denominational bias'. We truly need to remember that Jesus should be the head of this forum and before we place any question, note, or answer on it we should make sure in our own heart that the comment glorifies God and also that we have phrased it with the respect and love that He would use in answering. One of my biggest concerns on the forum is that someone who believes he/she knows the true word but has been deceived (ie. some sort of false religion) will mislead some of those who are not truly grounded in the word. However, the only answer to that is that God is in control and nothing will happen that He doesn't ordain. |

1271 | Is prayer of Jabez special? | 1 Chr 4:10 | prayon | 4458
Your words unfortunetly do have more than a ring of truth where priorities and wisdom are concerned. Many don't have either right. Nothing should be put before the word of God. Over facination is bad, but as you say God can do anything!!! Praise the Lord!! |

1272 | curious questions concerning crucifying | Matt 27:22 | prayon | 4457
Hank gave a very good description but I would like to add a little more. Jesus first suffering began in the Garden of Gethsemane at which time He sweated blood. This is a rare condition known as Hematidrosis. It happens when under great emotional stress; tiny capillaries in the sweat glands can break mixing the blood with sweat. This condition alone could of produced marked weakness and possible shock. With the soldiers striking Jesus in the face, by morning, He was battered and bruised as well as dehydrated and exhausted. When He was scrouged He was stripped of His clothing and His hands were tied to a pole above him. The "whip" was made of several heavy leather throngs with small beads of lead attached to the ends. At first the throngs cut only through the skin. As the scrourging continues each blow cut into His back a little deeper until there was arterial bleeding from in the underlying muscles. The small beads of lead produce bruises which are broken open by subsequent blows until the entire area is just a mass of torn bleeding tissue. The beating is stopped when the centurian determines that the prisoner is close to death. He is then allowed to slump to the ground where a robe is placed upon His back and crown of thorns is pressed into His scalp. Again there is heavy bleeding due to the fact that the head is one of the most vascular places on the body. After mocking Him with His "septor" the guards take the stick from Him and begin hitting Him on the head driving the thorns deeper into His head. When they tire of this sadistic sport the robe is ripped from His back. Since it had already adhered to the clots of blood and the serum in His wounds tearing it away caused excrutiating pain (similar to that of a careless removal of a surgical bandage). This caused the wounds on His back to bleed again. By this time He was in shock. The nails were heavy, square and made of wrought iron. The arms are not stretched out tight and the knees are left slightly bent allowing for an up and down movement of the body. As He slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating, fiery pains shoot along the fingers and and up the arms to explode int he brain - the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves. As He pushes upward to avoid this torment He places His full weight on the nails in His feet. Again there is the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between metatarsal bones of the feet. At this point another phenomenon accurs. As the arms fatigue, great waves of cramps sweep over the muscles, knotting them into deep, relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward. Hanging by His arms, the pectorial muscles are paralyzed and the intercostal muscles in the chest are unable to act. Air can be drawn into the lungs, but cannot be exhaled. Jesus fights in order to raise Himself in order to get one short breath. Finally carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and the bloodstream and the cramps partially subside. Spasmodically, He is able to push upward to exhale and bring in the life giving oxygen. It was undoubtedly during these times that He was able to utter the seven short sentences which are recorded in the bible. Hours of these limitless cycles of intermittent partial asphyxiation, joint-rendng cramps and excruciating pain go by as His tissue is torn from His lacerated back by the rough timber of the cross when another agony begins - a deep crushing pain in the chest as the pericardium (the sac around the heart) slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart. It is now almost over. The loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level. The compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood into the tissue. The tortured lungs are making a frantic effort to gasp in amall gulps of air. The markedly dehydrated tissues send their flood of messages to the brain. It is now that Jesus says "I thirst". He is offered a sponge soaked in Posca - a sour cheap wine - and refusses. He can feel the chill of death seeping through His body. "It is finished". With one last surge of strength He once again pressed His torn feet agianst the nail, straightens His legs, takes His last deep breath and utters His seventh and last cry "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. Apparently to make sure of death, the legionnaire drove his lance through the pericardium and into the heart. John 10:32 states that "immediately there came out blood and water". Thus there was an escape of water fluid from the pericardium and the heart. We, therefore, have conclusive post death evidence that Jesus died not the usual crucifixion death of suffocation but of heart failure due to shock and constriction of the heart by fluid in the pericardium. 1273 | What were Tabernacle and Temple? | OT general | prayon | 4452
The tabernacle was the portable sanctuary of the Isrealites when they were wandering in the wilderness. The temple was the permanent structure which was built by Solomon. They both were very important part of the worshipping of the Isrealites. Both the temple and the tabernacle were very similar in design and what was contained in them. The directions for the building of it are in Exodus 25-30. and the directions for the temple are in 1Kings 6-8.
1274 | Is prayer of Jabez special? | 1 Chr 4:10 | prayon | 4449
I too have to agree with you that people do go "hog wild" on some of the 'latest things". However, and you knew that there would be one from someone - Ha Ha), I have to say that I am really enjoying the Left Behind Series. I love to seriously study the word. I try to spend as much time doing it as I can but sometimes I like to give my brain a rest and just read for fun. The series in my opinion has taken the word/prophecies and made a story of them as to how it might be in the future. I'm sure that many who have read the series have been "scared straight" a little and if it does that aren't they worth it? I would also bet that the series have gotten people to read the bible to see if the stories are really true. If it gets them to open the bible aren't they worth it? I also have to add that almost every time I have opened a Christian book I have learned something that has helped me in my walk. For example, I just finished a book calle "Word of Honor" by Terri Blackstock. From the book I have a much better understanding of what a covenant is and how one was made in the O.T. Isn't that good? In reading the Bible Code I gained "ammo" for the next time I had a chance to witness to someone who didn't believe the bible was accurate. Isn't that good? I do agree though that you must check everything you learn with the scriptures and many don't do that. You must also make sure to keep your priorities in the right order. With Christ's Love, prayon |

1275 | Is prayer of Jabez special? | 1 Chr 4:10 | prayon | 4446
Their is a play on words between Jabez and 'oseb(pain). Because of that his name was likely to bring him many unpleasant circumstances. Many belived that the only way to change this was to change his name. However, Jabez did not do this. Instead he prayed to God. It is believed that the writer emphasized this to show that direct prayer can change the fortunes of life. His prayer was very special. It was a prayer for spiritual properity. It also asked for the enlargement of his coast and deliverence from evil. He showed great spiritual discernment. He prayed not to be kept from evil but to be kept from being grieved by it. He acknowledged that God was indeed the true center of his life. I may be mistaken but I believe that there was a book that came out recently about the prayer of Jabez. Check your bookstore if you want to know more. prayon |

1276 | Who were the scribes? | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 4438
According to the Harpers Bible Dictionary scribes is derived from the word "write" which acurately describes their job. They held a wide variety of offices and were usually had competence in some area such as law or economics. They were primarily concerned with the written records, politics and administation. They were considered leaders but also were considered part of the learned class. They were influential in the temple and in different areas of the government. In the NT they usually appeared along side of the high priests and elders and were always opponents of Jesus and later of Christianity. Scribes had to be very educated, have understanding of the law and be able to interpret the scriptures. Many times they interpreted the scriptures to fit what they or the priests or elders wanted them to say. |

1277 | Are we like the Pharisees? | Matt 16:1 | prayon | 4436
I think we are more like the Saducees today than the Pharisees. The Pharisees were very focused in their beliefs. They followed the traditions of the elders, believed in God's promises, and were looking for the Messiah. The Sadusees, on the other hand, didn't believe in the promises, didn't care about the bible, worked with the Roman government and were not looking for the Messiah. I think this describes the people of today more. So many people today could care less about religion but only about themselves. As with the Pharisees and the Sadusees a miracle could be done right in front of them and they wouldn't believe it. Jesus was at odds with them so much because they were being religious on the outside for and it was only for show because on the inside were full of nothing but self. They were wicked and they rejected the truth. I believe that He would of felt the same today as He did then. |

1278 | Who is going into the millennium? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 4432
I agree in part with GMSmith. This is the way I understand it. 2Corin 15:53 says that when we are raised in the rapture the perishable body will be made imperishable and this mortal body must put on immorality. Rev 20:5 says that the dead raised up from the tribulation will be judged. When Christ comes in the rapture (1st resurection) believers will be raised up and made immortal. Any 00 one who becomes a believer AFTER the rapture will go to heaven but will NOT become immortal. They will remain in their mortal bodies. Since the tribulation believers still have their physical bodies they will still have their sinful natures, so they and their children can choose to rebel against God. Rev 19:9 says "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast". Remember all those who were raised in the rapture, both old and new testament saints are the bride of Christ so we can't be the guests; it must be the tribulation believers. The wedding guests will join the bride and groom in fellowship with one another for the next 1000 years. Hope this helps Ed. prayon |

1279 | Weekly Communion? | 1 Cor 11:25 | prayon | 4342
In my translation - New Revised Standard life Application Bible - it has a footnote to verse Acts 20:7 that states "a fellowship dinner- much like a potluck supper was eaten before the Lord's supper was celebrated with the breaking of bread and the drinking of the cup". I'm not sure that this does specifically say that they did communion every week or not. "As often as possible" could also be taken to mean everyday. Luke 22:19 and 1Cor 11:24 say simply "do this in remembrance of me". 1Cor11:25 says "do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me". As I stated before there is no right answer as to how often. It all depends how your particular denomination believes.
1280 | Weekly Communion? | 1 Cor 11:25 | prayon | 4255
There is no mention in the bible on how often we should partake of the Lord's Supper or Communion. Just as there is many different views as to what you are partaking of, (ie., for catholics the elements become the blood and body of Christ, for Lutherans they take on the characteristics, for Presbyterians they have no physical changes but have spiritual changes and for the Baptists it is all symbolic) different religions interpret how often you should partake of it. Sorry I couldn't give you a more definitive answer. prayon |
